Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Max Scherzer, Blake Snell, Joey Gallo

It’s time for the Week 17 edition of the Fantasy Baseball Injury Report. There are injuries to updates throughout the league, and FantasyPros is here to keep you prepared for the home stretch into the playoffs.

Max Scherzer (SP – WSH) returned from the injured list last Thursday after having inflammation under the bursa in his shoulder. He felt pain Friday and an MRI revealed a mild strain of the rhomboid muscle below his shoulder in his upper back. Scherzer received a stem cell injection and is being shut down for a couple of days. Highly unlikely to make his next start Tuesday, he will be re-evaluated early this week.

Blake Snell (SP- TB) was placed on the 10-day injured list July 25, retroactive to July 22, with loose bodies in his left elbow. He is expected to undergo surgery Monday and miss at least four weeks. This is obviously devastating news for fantasy owners, but the Rays are confident he will return before the end of the season.

Joey Gallo (1B/OF – TEX) also received crushing news this week, as he was diagnosed with a broken hamate bone in his right hand. He underwent surgery on July 25 and is expected to miss at least four weeks. There is a chance Gallo could return in September, as Matt Olson missed six weeks after undergoing the same procedure.

Here are a few more injuries to track this week.

Yandy Diaz (1B/3B – TB)
Diaz was placed on the 10-day injured list July 23 with a left foot contusion. On crutches and dealing with swelling, he doesn’t currently have a set timetable for his return.

Tyler Mahle (SP – CIN)
Cincinnati placed Mahle on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain July 22. He is still experiencing soreness and does not have a set date for his return.

Jon Gray (SP – COL)
Gray exited his last start with right calf issues, but the Rockies have cleared him to make Monday’s start at home against the Dodgers.

Brett Gardner (OF – NYY)
Gardner went on the 10-day injured list July 25, retroactive to July 22, with left knee inflammation. He might be able to return in early August.

Gary Sanchez (C – NYY)
Sanchez was placed on the 10-day injured list July 24 with a left groin strain. He does not have a set timetable for his return, but the star catcher avoided a more severe injury with a Grade 1 diagnosis.

Franmil Reyes (OF – SD)
Described as “a little banged up” by manager Andy Green, Reyes sat out Friday and Saturday before playing Sunday. The Padres didn’t disclose a specific injury, so the outfielder appears to be OK moving forward.

Corey Dickerson (OF – PIT)
Dickerson exited Friday’s game with groin discomfort and did not play (against two lefties) during the weekend. He is currently listed as day-to-day, and the Pirates will likely exude caution with the possible trade candidate.

John Means (SP – BAL)
Means was placed on the 10-day injured list July 26, retroactive to July 25, with a left biceps strain. An MRI revealed no structural damage to his shoulder Sunday, so he may only need to miss one more start.

Dee Gordon (2B – SEA)
Gordon landed on the 10-day injured list July 23 with a quad strain. Initially expected to miss several weeks, his recovery has progressed well in recent days. He could resume baseball activities this week and return sooner than anticipated.

Ross Stripling (SP/RP – LAD)
Removed from his last start with a stiff neck, Stripling went on the 10-day injured list July 27, retroactive to July 24, with biceps tendinitis. He’s expected to miss one or two starts.

Nick Markakis (OF – ATL)
Markakis was placed on the 10-day injured list July 27 with a fractured left wrist. He will likely miss six to eight weeks.

Dansby Swanson (SS – ATL)
Swanson hit the 10-day injured list July 27, retroactive to July 24, with a contusion in his right foot. The Braves hope he will return when eligible this weekend.

Ronald Acuna Jr. (OF – ATL)
Jean Segura (SS – PHI)
Acuna and Segura both exited Sunday’s game after colliding at second base. Acuna said his neck stiffness felt better after the game, and he hopes to not miss any time. Segura needed help walking off the field, but a shin bruise isn’t as serious as it initially appeared. He’s day-to-day.

Out since July 17 with a right ulnar nerve contusion, Jimenez returned Sunday and should be safe to use going forward.
