Pat Fitzmaurice’s Dynasty Fantasy Football Targets: Quarterback (2022)

Feb 22, 2022

With the growing popularity of 2QB and superflex fantasy football leagues, the quarterback has never been more important in the world of fake football. That’s especially the case in dynasty formats. We’re here to help you navigate the trading waters of your league or your upcoming dynasty startup fantasy football drafts.

Pat Fitzmaurice shares his favorite dynasty fantasy football targets at quarterback. These are players he is higher on versus our dynasty Expert Consensus Rankings.

Joe Burrow (QB – CIN)
Pat’s Rank: QB3 | Dynasty ECR: QB5

In his second NFL season, Burrow averaged 8.9 yards per pass attempt. Tom Brady never had a season with a YPA that high, and Aaron Rodgers has reached that number only once. And consider that when Burrow’s marvelous season began, he was less than a year removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL and MCL. Burrow also has the superb young WR duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to make his job easier.

Justin Fields (QB – CHI)
Pat’s Rank: QB9 | Dynasty ECR: QB10

Fields looked completely overmatched early in his rookie season but showed promise as the season wore on. He ran for 361 yards over his final seven starts, hinting at vast rushing potential. He’s a work in progress as a passer, but he has a big arm and is capable of making all the throws.

Trevor Lawrence (QB – JAC)
Pat’s Rank: QB10 | Dynasty ECR: QB13

It would be silly to write him off after a bleak rookie season, particularly when it’s so easy to pin all the blame on Urban Meyer. There were some eye-opening throws at times, but Lawrence completed less than 60% of his passes, threw 12 TDs and 17 INTs, and averaged only 6.0 yards per attempt. T-Law’s pedigree suggests that good things are coming, but it’s a big leap of faith after such a dismal rookie season.

Mac Jones (QB – NE)
Pat’s Rank: QB15 | Dynasty ECR: QB17

Unlike some of the QBs drafted ahead of him in 2021, Jones rarely looked overwhelmed or overmatched in his rookie year. On the other hand, Jones was much more of a game manager than a playmaker as a rookie, and he offers little rushing value. There’s certainly room for growth, but he needs more pass-catching weaponry, and he needs Bill Belichick to loosen the reins.

Zach Wilson (QB – NYJ)
Pat’s Rank: QB17 | Dynasty ECR: QB19

Wilson’s rookie numbers were predictably putrid, but there were enough flashes to hold our interest. The arm talent is appealing. Wilson had four TD runs and showed Houdini-esque escapability at times. He has some exciting young weapons in WR Elijah Moore and RB Michael Carter. Expect baby steps, not a quantum leap, in Year Two.

Davis Mills (QB – HOU)
Pat’s Rank: QB24 | Dynasty ECR: QB31

The third-round rookie’s surprisingly decent rookie season was a bright spot in an otherwise depressing season for the 2021 Texans. Mills was the QB10 over his final five starts, with nine TD passes and a pair of 300-yard games over that stretch. Not entrenched as a starter yet, but he has a foot in the door. Keep an eye on Houston’s offseason QB moves for clues on Mills’ 2022 value.

Mitchell Trubisky (QB – FA)
Pat’s Rank: QB34 | Dynasty ECR: QB41

He’s a free agent, and with too few chairs currently available in the NFL’s game of musical QBs, Trubisky is likely to get a chance to start somewhere. His 2018 season with the Bears raised hopes; his 2019 and 2020 seasons dashed them. Running ability and an NFL-caliber arm are the draws for any team willing to have patience with a rehabilitation project.
