Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft: Five-Round, Superflex, Late Pick (2022 Fantasy Football)

May 29, 2022
Matt Corral

The 2022 NFL Draft has come and gone, and that means it’s time for dynasty rookie and startup drafts to really take off. We’ll have you covered throughout the draft season. You can find our full dynasty startup, dynasty rookie, and dynasty superflex rookie rankings that will be updated through draft season.

You can also practice and prepare for your dynasty rookie and startup drafts using our FREE dynasty mock draft simulator. Let’s take a look at a dynasty rookie mock draft.

1.11 Christian Watson (WR – GB)
Senior Bowl standout and combine phenom Christian Watson is officially a cheesehead filling a glaring need for Packer nation at receiver. Watson’s small school and non-early declare status is problematic, but the talent and opportunity are there for him to explode. Watson is competing with Allen Lazard, the Lizard King, Randall Cobb, fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs, and a laundry list of depth chart filler for targets. He’s a moonshot home run swing worth taking in the mid to late first round of drafts tied to a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers.

2.11 Matt Corral (QB – CAR)
Among the quarterbacks drafted in the third round in the NFL Draft, Matt Corral could have the easiest path to playing time in year one. Sam Darnold flopped as a reclamation project last season in Carolina. Matt Rhule is firmly parked on the hot seat at the moment. At best, rolling it back with Darnold in 2022 feels like a shaky proposition. Rhule needs this team to take a step forward and possibly contend (or make) for the playoffs to add some length to his leash. Corral has his question marks with erratic deep accuracy and residing from an RPO and first read-heavy scheme at Ole Miss. If he can show even a glimmer of promise in camp or the preseason, Corral could be under center Week 1 instead of the long-time Ghostbuster’s intern, Darnold.

3.11 Tyquan Thornton (WR – NE)
The Patriots pull off another double-take-worthy pick by selecting Tyquan Thornton in the second round of the NFL Draft. Thornton tested out as an elite-level athlete at the Combine with a blazing 4.28 40-yard dash time and above 90th percentile speed and burst scores, but this pick was a massive reach. With an expected draft position of 123 per, the Patriots were seduced by the speed juice to take him this early. Thornton’s prospects for early production or a high ceiling are hard to see. He will be competing for targets with DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne, and their slew of tight ends and running backs on a run-first team.

4.11 Justyn Ross (WR – KC)
In the end, Justyn Ross‘s early collegiate production and breakout age (94th percentile) couldn’t outweigh the medical concerns. With a spinal surgery and stress fracture in his foot on the medical docket, Ross comes with risk. His UDFA destination to Kansas City will make him an attractive flier with a late pick in any draft but tread carefully. The Chiefs have little invested in Ross’s future. It’s not outside the realm of possibilities that he doesn’t even break camp with the team. There’s equity in selecting him based solely on the upside, but I wouldn’t go overboard in rookie drafts.

5.11 Kyle Philips (WR – TEN)
I’m disappointed to report that I acquired zero of Titans wide receiver, Kyle Philips, in my real rookie drafts. First, he was taken one spot before me by FantasyPros’ own Pat Fitzmaurice after I waxed poetic about him on Pat’s Fitz on Fantasy podcast. Then he got swept up right before my pick in another dynasty rookie draft. I believe he has some sneaky Hunter Renfrow-like slot skill that most will overlook, but NFL teams like the Titans will love. Philips commanded a 30 percent target share in 2021 at UCLA and could potentially become a top underneath option for Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee.
