Fantasy Baseball Trade Advice: Tim Anderson, Jordan Montgomery, Lance Lynn

Fantasy baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Unlike other fantasy sports, the season is long and drags as the weeks roll on. However, because it is such a grind, fantasy managers can lose focus on what is important and what is not, which allows astute fantasy managers to take advantage.

When we are past the halfway point to the season, we are really beginning to see the trends and who might be underrated and overrated. However, hot streaks and cold streaks can scare your competition, and sometimes underlying numbers aren’t showing up on the surface numbers quite yet. If someone in your league is ready to overreact, then take advantage of their impatience. Here are some players that I would try and buy low and sell high on at this point in the season.

This week’s article has a theme around the trade deadline. As the deadline approaches, we are going to see small and big changes in some players’ values. Now is the time to stash or trade for players that might gain value or sell the ones that could lose value before the trades actually happen.

Buy Low

Tim Anderson (SS – CWS)

Anderson has been a name that has been brought up as a potential trade candidate, but his appearance on this list has little to do with changing parks and more about him just being better than he has played thus far this year. Anderson is hitting .241/.481/.283 with no home runs and 10 stolen bases. Maybe a change of scenery does something for him, but right now, he should be free in a trade.

Lance Lynn (SP – CWS)

Lynn has been up and down all season, but I think a trade will do a lot of good for him. Chicago has been the ninth worst park for home runs this season, and if he ended up in a place like Arizona or Baltimore, it could be a huge boost for his value. He was a top-30 pitcher in the second half last year. Could he do that again? I think he can.

Teoscar Hernandez (OF – SEA)

I don’t know if the Mariners are sellers, buyers, or just going to stand pat, but if they decide that they are too far out, they could move Hernandez pretty easily. Seattle has been dreadful for right handed power this year, and he would get a nice boost in a lot of locations.

Sell High

Mickey Moniak (OF – LAA)

Moniak isn’t on the block, most likely, even if the Angels do decide to sell, but almost everyone else of consequence probably is. With Mike Trout on the IL, if the Angels move guys like Shohei Ohtani and Hunter Renfroe, the lineup around Moniak is going to get pretty ugly. Pair that with him being one of the luckiest hitters in baseball up until this point, and it might be a pretty ugly second half for the former first overall pick.

Jordan Montgomery (SP – STL)

This one pains me as I am highly invested in Montgomery, but he is definitely going to get moved at the deadline, and very few landing spots are going to be as good for him as it is in St. Louis. In spite of their struggles, it has been one of the best parks to pitch in, and the defense there is stellar. Unless Montgomery ends up in Baltimore or Arizona, he is going to lose value more likely than not.

Jurickson Profar (OF – COL)

Profar has not been very good this year, and it is likely about to get worse. He has hit just .243/.323/.376 with seven home runs and a stolen base, and now he is likely to get traded out of Colorado and likely moves into a reserve role wherever he ends up.

David Robertson (RP – NYM)

Robertson has been pretty great as the Mets closer, saving 14 games with a 2.08 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. However, he should be traded since the Mets aren’t competitive, and it is the last year of his deal. He could end up being the closer on a different team, or he could end up as a set up guy, which would kill his value. It is risky to hold, and hope he is still in the ninth inning in his new location.
