Closer News & Notes
After it had been a tie at the top in the saves column in recent weeks, Robert Suarez regained the lead by three saves. He has posted four scoreless appearances and four saves within the first week and a half of July.
After six straight scoreless appearances, Jeff Hoffman entered the game on Friday with Toronto leading 7-3 in the ninth inning. It was a non-save situation. He allowed three runs on three hits, while the Blue Jays just escaped the game with a 7-6 win. While he has had some ups and downs, Hoffman remains locked into the closer role.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Mariners on Thursday as they looked to avoid the sweep against the Yankees. After seven no-hit innings from Bryan Woo, Matt Brash entered the game in the eighth inning with Seattle leading 5-1. He allowed a two-run home run to Giancarlo Stanton before Andres Munoz collapsed in the ninth inning to force extra innings, where the Yankees went on to win. Brash and Munoz have been elite for most of the season, so this shouldn’t be a big concern.
Will Vest has taken control of the closer role in the Tigers’ bullpen with seven saves since the start of June.
Shelby Miller is headed for a second opinion after landing on the injured list (IL) with a right forearm strain. Kevin Ginkel appears to have a hold of that closer role for now.
The Phillies are one of the top teams looking to trade for relievers this month after Jordan Romano blew another save earlier this week.
