Closer News & Notes

Robert Suarez maintains his lead in the MLB in saves with 31 on the season. He is now joined by Mason Miller after the Padres acquired him from the Athletics. We saw them back-to-back on Friday with Miller logging the hold in the eighth inning and Suarez recording the save to close out the win.

The Yankees made a ton of moves bringing in Jake Bird, Camilo Doval and David Bednar. It was a nightmare debut on Friday as the three of them combined to allow nine runs (seven earned) in the walk-off loss against the Marlins. Manager Aaron Boone has said Devin Williams would remain in the closer role.

With Doval traded, Randy Rodriguez steps into the closer role in the Giants bullpen.

After dealing with bullpen issues all season, the Phillies made a move for Jhoan Duran from the Twins (who moved almost everyone at the deadline). Duran logged his first save for the Phillies on Friday.

The Mets traded for Ryan Helsley from the Cardinals. He threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts and two hits in his team debut on Friday. He should be in the set-up role with Edwin Diaz remaining in his closer role.

The Tigers acquired Kyle Finnegan from the Nationals. It is a committee for now in their bullpen, but Finnegan could eventually take over that closer role.

Robert Garcia stepped into the closer role in the Rangers bullpen. He blew a save chance on Friday against the Mariners. Texas also traded for Danny Coulombe and Phil Maton with them each throwing a scoreless frame before Garcia blowing the save. It is possible we see one of them get an opportunity to step into the closer role.
