DraftBattle: Week 4 Targets

Quentin Johnston (WR – LAC)

Quentin Johnston is in the midst of a breakout season. Currently sixth in the NFL with 239 receiving yards, Johnston has been downright impressive. Sure, it must be much easier to be viewed as the number three by opposing defenses, but the post-hype breakout is real. QJ has seen a 21.7 percent target share through three contests and has responded with an impressive 2.6 yards per route run and 7.1 yards after catch per reception, despite an average depth of target of 14 yards. However, the true measuring stick came last week when he went up against Pat Surtain on 86 percent of his routes and still hauled in three of four targets for 61 receiving yards, the most Surtain has given up in the last two years (he finished the day with six receptions for 89 receiving yards overall). It took a while for Johnston to get here, but it appears that he has finally arrived. This weekend, the Chargers will take on the New York Giants. The Giants’ front is ferocious, but it hasn’t helped their pass coverage much. Through three games, New York has relinquished 15.3 receptions per game (second most) and 195.7 receiving yards per game (second most) to the wide receiver position. The Chargers may not need to throw much in this one, but that is the beauty of rostering QJ at DraftBattle. If he doesn’t perform up to expectations, the best ball format will swap him out for a higher scorer on your bench. You may need to be a tad aggressive to land QJ, but he is the type of receiver that best ball managers should want on their rosters.

Tre Tucker (WR – LV)

Yes, there is a bit of chasing going on here, but with the best ball format DraftBattle, Tucker is well worth the gamble. Tre went insane in Week 3, hauling in eight of nine targets for 145 receiving yards and three touchdowns. With his scintillating performance, Tucker has proven without a shadow of a doubt that he can be a best ball lottery ticket on any given Sunday. Tucker will go a bit overlooked in drafts this weekend due to people thinking Week 3 was an aberration, a lack of name equity, and the fact that he is still third in targets on the team through three weeks, behind Jakobi Meyers and Brock Bowers. However, Tucker saw an elite 33 percent of the targets in Week 3 and could see his role continue to grow at the expense of the aforementioned Bowers and Meyers. Geno Smith has thrown just four touchdown passes through three games; all four have gone to Tre Tucker. He likely will not match this level of production again in his career, but it gave us a glimpse of his upside and clued us in as to why he is starting over Jack Bech. Target Tre where needed in the later rounds as a potential week winner against a Chicago Bears team surrendering the third most fantasy points per game to the wide receiver position, a number that would be even worse if not for CeeDee Lamb getting hurt and J.J. McCarthy not being much of a passing threat yet.

Trey Benson (RB – ARI)

Trey Benson is set to get an extended audition for the Cardinals’ lead back job for 2025 and beyond. Drafted as James Conner’s heir apparent, the young back was pushed to the back burner due to Conner continuing to produce at a significantly high level in both the running and passing games. However, with Conner now lost for the season, Benson should get all the work he can handle. There is some concern about the actual share of work Benson may receive, especially after we have all seen Emari Demercado get more touches when Conner missed time before, but it appears that the Cardinals think Benson is ready. Benson saw 75 percent of the snaps and 78 percent of RB touches after Conner’s injury in Week 3, and will likely stay in the 65 to 75 range, even if Michael Carter Jr. or Bam Knight are also sprinkled in. For his part, Benson has been impressive in his reserve role thus far this season, leading the league in rushing yards over expectation per attempt and averaging an elite six yards per carry overall. Expect the Cardinals to lean on Benson to try to wear down the Seahawks’ defense tonight on Thursday Night Football. Target Benson, where feasible, for Week 4 at DraftBattle.
