This is a welcome addition for most fantasy managers, as while there are a few who play in enough leagues to always have a team in contention, the vast majority of fantasy managers only play in one or two leagues. The Second Chance Drafts, and more specifically the FantasyPros 2nd Chance League, will provide those who find themselves in the bottom third of their league or who know they won’t be competing with an opportunity to have a fresh start with a new ‘season’.

This helps to provide a solution for a considerable pain point for managers who join leagues with the express purpose of added fun, entertainment, and excitement all season long. The Second Chance Draft provides an avenue to make sure everyone can enjoy fantasy football, all season long, even if they run into misfortune in their traditional season long league.

Draft Prep

Second Chance Drafts are upon us. Now that we are a month into the season, fantasy managers have gathered draft-altering information on injuries and player performance. Today, we will take a look at some of the biggest fallers at the wide receiver position based on consensus ADP and actual production through five games (written prior to Week 6).

Justin Jefferson (WR – MIN): ADP WR2, Ranking WR12
Jefferson should still be one of the first wide receivers off the board in Renegade Fantasy second chance drafts. Ja’Marr Chase was also considered for this column, but got a mini QB upgrade in Joe Flacco and should still be one of the first two or three wideouts selected. Jefferson, on the other hand, will see his statistical output take a hit when/if Minnesota decides to go back to their starter in JJ McCarthy. We always expected McCarthy to be a game manager, but he looked far from ready outside of one quarter of action. Perhaps the return of Jordan Addison will help, as it allows Jefferson to be motioned and allows for more snap alignment versatility as well. Whatever the case, Jefferson cannot be trusted as a top-five, or maybe even as a top-10 option with McCarthy at quarterback. Jefferson saw just 6.5 targets a game with McCarthy under center versus 9.7 a game with Wentz. Adjust your rankings and expectations as necessary.

Nico Collins (WR – HOU): ADP WR6, Ranking WR18
The inclusion of Collins is really more about the Houston Texans’ shaky offensive line and the resulting average time to pressure affecting the connection between Collins and CJ Stroud. Collins should still see a healthy volume, but the target quality and percentage has, and will stay dropped. Collins saw 28.3 percent of the targets in 2024, good for third in the league. He currently sits at a 24.8 percent share, which ranks 20th in the league and is often a number good number two receivers hover around. For context, Keenan Allen has a 25.0 percent target share, and Davante Adams sits at 25.7 percent. Collins’ number is actually projected to decrease as the season progresses and players like Jayden Higgins, Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel, and Christian Kirk become more comfortable in the offense. Nico should still push for WR1 numbers, but can no longer be considered a potential top-five wideout for draft purposes. Adjust your cheat sheet accordingly.

A.J. Brown (WR – PHI): ADP WR10, Ranking WR43
A.J. Brown has been a massive disappointment through five weeks of the season. He was already one of the more volatile WR1 options due to his quarterback play coupled with the run-heavy nature of the offense, but things have spiraled this season. He sees a solid amount of targets at 7.2 per game (20th in the league), but the target quality has been severely lacking. Box score watchers (who don’t actually watch the game) will bemoan A.J. seeing nine targets in Week 4, but hauling in only two. While game watchers will show you that he had multiple passes sail way over his head. How bad has Hurts been when targeting Brown? Brown has seen just a 61.1 percent catchable target rate, good for 78th in the NFL. This number should improve, but helps to accentuate the issues Brown is likely to continue to face this season. He will have his spike weeks, but they look like they may come more spread apart than we are used to, dropping Brown out of the WR1 conversation for Renegade Fantasy Second Chance Drafts. Adjust your cheat sheet accordingly.
