Smash Spots
Cristopher Sanchez (SP – PHI) vs. WSH
Cristopher Sanchez is a legit National League Cy Young contender, coming off a dominant performance against the Rangers. Expect another great start against a Nationals team that struggles against lefties. We just saw Matthew Boyd rack up strikeouts against them.
Cole Ragans (SP – KCR) vs. MIN
Cole Ragans is my pick to win the American League Cy Young Award. While he had an injury-plagued year last season, you have to love the 38+% strikeout rate. If Ragans can stay healthy, the sky is the limit.
Kyle Bradish (SP – BAL) – at PIT
Kyle Bradish is another year removed from Tommy John surgery and is set to open up his season with a great matchup against the Pirates in a pitcher-friendly environment.
Risky Starts
Eury Perez (SP – MIA) at NYY
Eury Perez was one of my biggest targets in drafts. You’re obviously not benching him, but we have to acknowledge that there’s a slight degree of concern against the Yankees.
Jesus Luzardo (SP – PHI) at COL
Jesus Luzardo is an innings eater capable of providing elite ratios with strong strikeout rates. However, any time you go to Coors Field, there’s a risk of a blowup.
Gavin Williams (SP – CLE) at LAD
Gavin Williams has to go up against the National League All-Star team… I mean the Dodgers. That’s even more difficult when the start comes on the road. I’d probably bench him here.
Two-Start Pitchers
Cody Ponce (SP – TOR) vs. COL, at CWS
Cody Ponce was dominant in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) last year. Plus, he looked terrific in spring training. He will be pitching in an absolute smash spot at home against the Rockies, followed by a start on the road against the White Sox. These are two of the worst teams in all of baseball.
Kyle Harrison (SP – MIL) vs. TBR, at KCR
Kyle Harrison is the latest Brewers reclamation project, set for a two-start week with an exploitable matchup against the Rays. The Royals are a tougher spot, but not enough to consider benching Harrison.
Mick Abel (SP – MIN) at KCR, at TBR
Mick Abel won a spot in the Twins’ rotation thanks to an excellent spring. Let’s see if he can build momentum in a two-start week. Like with Kyle Harrison, the Royals and the Rays aren’t tough enough to make you bench Abel here.
