Wednesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings (7/1)

Zack Wheeler (SP – PHI) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Zack Wheeler isn’t on the main slate on DraftKings, but he’s the top pitching option on FanDuel. He’s dialed in. According to FanGraphs, in his previous five starts spanning 31.2 innings, Wheeler has logged the following numbers:

  • 4 wins
  • 4 quality starts
  • 1.71 ERA
  • 2.56 xERA
  • 3.22 xFIP
  • 3.36 SIERA
  • 0.88 WHIP
  • 8.3% walk rate
  • 28.3% strikeout rate
  • 12.6% SwStr%
  • 27.1% CSW%
  • 105 stuff+
  • 103 location+
  • 109 pitching+

Wheeler’s matchup is mixed, and his betting info is decent. The Pirates are second in wRC+ (117) with a 22.9% strikeout rate versus righties in 2026. However, Pittsburgh is 15th in wRC+ (97) with a 25.2% strikeout rate on the road, and they’re 27th in wRC+ (80) with a 24.9% strikeout rate in the previous 30 days. The Phillies are -135 favorites, and the game’s total is eight runs.

Tatsuya Imai (SP – HOU) vs. Minnesota Twins

Tatsuya Imai was tattooed for five runs in only 0.2 of an inning on June 12th, but he’s allowed three earned runs or fewer and amassed at least five innings in his other five starts since May 25th. Even with that disastrous start, Imai has ripped off the following numbers in his previous six starts, totaling 29.2 innings:

    • 4 wins
    • 4 quality starts
    • 3.64 ERA
    • 2.95 xERA
    • 3.08 xFIP
    • 3.25 SIERA
    • 1.04 WHIP
    • 9.2% walk rate
    • 31.1% strikeout rate
    • 12.6% SwStr%
    • 29.5% CSW%
    • 87 stuff+
    • 101 location+
    • 89 pitching+

Imai’s pitch modeling is a red flag, but the rest of his profile is stellar. His matchup is challenging, but it’s less difficult if Byron Buxton sits again tonight.

The Twins are tied for fifth in wRC+ (110) with a 21.4% strikeout rate versus righties and fifth in wRC+ (105) with a 23% strikeout rate on the road this year. Yet, Minnesota is 19th in wRC+ (94) with a 25% strikeout rate in the previous 30 days, so they’re not insurmountable. Additionally, the Astros are -130 favorites, and the game’s total is 8.5 runs.

Max Meyer (SP – MIA) at Colorado Rockies

Using any pitcher at Coors Field is risky, and that’s reflected in the game’s total of 10.5 runs. Nevertheless, the Marlins are -160 favorites, which eases some concerns about using Max Meyer in DFS.

Furthermore, Meyer is pitching well, and his matchup is favorable. In Meyer’s past five starts spanning 30.1 innings, he’s recorded the following stats:

    • 4 wins
    • 3 quality starts
    • 1.78 ERA
    • 2.93 xERA
    • 3.84 xFIP
    • 3.68 SIERA
    • 1.15 WHIP
    • 8.9% walk rate
    • 26.6% strikeout rate
    • 10.8% SwStr%
    • 28.7% CSW%
    • 98 stuff+
    • 103 location+
    • 105 pitching+

Meanwhile, the Rockies are 22nd in wRC+ (97) with a 21.7% strikeout rate versus righties and 28th in wRC+ (85) with a 22.2% strikeout rate at home this season. Colorado is also dead last in wRC+ (61) with a 28.2% strikeout rate in the previous 30 days.

    Suggested Lineup Stacks

J.T. Ginn is the owner of a 5.54 ERA, 4.57 xFIP, 1.61 WHIP, 11% walk rate and 20.2% strikeout rate in 89.1 innings in his hitter-friendly home ballpark since last season. Ginn is tough on righties, even at home, holding them to a .277 wOBA. However, Ginn has coughed up a .361 wOBA to left-handed batters at home in 2026, making Los Angeles’ left-handed batters and switch-hitters the most appealing stacking choices.

The Giants didn’t take advantage of a cushy matchup last night, but they draw another one tonight. Zac Gallen doesn’t belong in a big-league rotation. He has a 6.15 ERA, 6.17 xERA, 4.91 xFIP, 4.99 SIERA and 1.58 WHIP in 17 starts this season. Gallen is a plus-matchup for all of San Francisco’s hitters, allowing a .359 wOBA to righties and a .384 wOBA to lefties this season.

    Core Studs

    • Max Muncy has hit 38 homers with a .387 on-base percentage (OBP), .242 ISO, .382 wOBA and 147 wRC+ in 755 plate appearances against righties since 2024.
    • Bryce Eldridge has launched six long balls with 23 runs, 16 RBI, a .368 OBP, .196 ISO, .366 wOBA and 136 wRC+ in 171 plate appearances this season.
    • Freddie Freeman has ripped 13 round-trippers with 49 runs, 46 RBI, two stolen bases, a .382 OBP, .201 ISO, .381 wOBA and 144 wRC+ in 364 plate appearances in 2026.

    • Jung Hoo Lee has mashed five taters with 41 runs, 31 RBI, five stolen bases, a .348 OBP, .137 ISO, .349 wOBA and 124 wRC+ in 310 plate appearances this season.
