Carter Capps begins throwing off of a mound

by Chris Zolli | Tue, Feb 7th 7:54pm EST

Carter Capps has finally started throwing off of a mound, finding his way back from Tommy John surgery in 2016. Capps was traded to the Padres from the Marlins at midseason and is fighting to become the closer for San Diego. He had 1.16 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 31 innings for Miami in 2015. Fantasy Impact:

Capps' explosive strikeout potential and dwindling walk rate over his last four healthy seasons lead many to believe that he is a breakout candidate at closer. The Padres do not have a stable option at closer in Brandon Maurer and that could open the door for Capps or Kevin Quackenbush. Capps was one of the most explosive relievers in 2015, but has no career saves, so temper your expectations if he wins the closer's job in San Diego.
