Donovan Walton could make Opening Day roster

With Nick Madrigal (shoulder) set to open the season on the 60-day IL, Donnie Walton has a real shot at making the Mets' Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact:

The Mets are in need of a backup shortstop behind Francisco Lindor, and Walton stands out as the best defensive candidate in camp. The 30-year-old has limited major league experience, posting a .532 OPS over 205 plate appearances between the Mariners and Giants, but his .303/.377/.438 slash line at Triple-A Sacramento last season suggests some offensive upside. The Mets would need to clear a 40-man roster spot to add Walton, and if Brett Baty proves capable of handling shortstop, he could be an alternative for the bench role.
