Now 28, Mervis is hoping a change of scenery turns his career around as he heads to his hometown Nationals. Mervis has belted 101 career home runs in the minors, but it has not translated to much success in the majors as he has hit just .165 with 10 home runs and a 34.5% strikeout rate in 260 career plate appearances. He hit seven of his home runs in 42 games with the Marlins last season. As of now, Washington's best options at first base are Andres Chaparro, Warming Bernabel and Luis Garcia, so an opportunity could happen for Mervis with a good spring.
