Walbert Urena has strong outing in first career start

by David Leisering | Angels Correspondent | Mon, Apr 20th 8:09am EDT

Walbert Urena made his first career start on Sunday against the Padres and, despite suffering the loss, allowed only two runs on four hits in six innings during the Angels' 2-1 setback. The young righthander walked two and struck out eight.

Fantasy Impact:

Urena started on Sunday after getting the call-up on Saturday and Reid Detmers, who was scheduled to take the ball, had his start pushed back to Monday. He surrendered just one extra-base hit and struck out at least one batter in each of the first six innings. He walked the first two batters to start the seventh - his only two walks of the game - before exiting. Urena appeared in two games for the Angels in March and had a 0.00 ERA in 1.2 innings, though he struggled in his second outing, allowing six unearned runs on four hits and two walks in one inning against the Astros. Urena was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake to get stretched out and pitched to a 6.48 ERA in two starts there. It's unclear if Urena will get another start during this rotation cycle, but Sunday's outing was certainly a positive.
