Jeff Hoffman earns save in win over Pirates Saturday

by Brenton Kemp | Blue Jays Correspondent | Sun, May 24th 12:11pm EDT

Blue Jays right-hander Jeff Hoffman earned the save on Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

Fantasy Impact:

After Louis Varland earned a two-inning save on Friday, it was Hoffman who was called upon to close out the Pirates on Saturday. The former closer dominated the Bucs in the ninth, striking out all three hitters he faced on 13 pitches, nine of which were strikes. The save was Hoffman's fifth of the season and his second in as many outings. Hoffman was removed from the closer's role in late April after posting a 6.39 ERA through his first 12 2/3 innings, but he has responded with a far-improved 3.48 ERA in 10 1/3 innings in the month of May. Still, with Varland sporting a minuscule 0.65 ERA and going 7-for-7 in save opportunities, it's extremely unlikely Hoffman will regain his closer's role any time soon.
