Texas Rangers - 4% owned

Bats: B, Throws: L

The Rangers have placed LHP Derek Holland on the 15-day disabled list due to shoulder inflammation.

Fantasy Impact: Holland will likely be shut down for a period to allow the inflammation to subside. It won't be until then that the Rangers will likely be able to provide a clearer time frame on his return. Holland has had some decent outings this season, but his ratios are overall ugly (5.20 ERA/1.42 WHIP) and he's not striking out many batters, limiting his fantasy value.

Derek Holland allowed just three hits and two runs over seven innings of work to lead the Texas Rangers to a 3-2 win over Seattle and a sweep of their three game series. Holland's lone mistake was a pitch former teammate Nelson Cruz hit for a two-run bomb. Holland walked two and struck out six on the day.

Fantasy Impact: That's three straight quality starts for Holland coming on the heels of two horrific outings last month. Many people, including myself, dropped him in mid-May after his back-to-back meltdowns, but it appears he has straightened things out again. He might be available in your league.

Derek Holland tossed a solid 6 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, but the Rangers offense provided no support in a 2-0 defeat to the Angels. Holland, who had two miserable starts earlier in the month, walked one and struck out four. His lone mistake came on a pitch over the plate that Albert Pujols crushed for a two-run homer.

Fantasy Impact: It's nice to see Holland post his second straight respectable outing after a couple of horrendous trips to the mound. He pitched well enough to win tonight, but his mates managed to strand nine runners and come up empty on several good scoring opportunities.

Derek Holland allowed just three hits and two runs over six innings of work, but the Rangers could manage little offense against A's rookie Sean Manaea as they fell to Oakland 3-1. Holland walked one and struck out one in watching his record fall to 3-3.

Fantasy Impact: Despite the loss, Monday's performance was a huge improvement over Holland's last two outings where he didn't even last until the third inning. The Rangers lack of pop against a pitcher with an ERA entering the contest over 11.00 has to be frustrating for Holland, but he should be thrilled with the overall results.

Category: , Game Recaps

After two horrific starts his last two times on the hill, Holland will hope to right the ship on Monday against Oakland. Over his last two outings, Holland has allowed 19 hits and 16 runs in a combined five innings of work.

Fantasy Impact: He was pitching extremely well until the last two meltdowns. If the A's light him up in a pitcher's park, then it's time to sit him or drop him because it will mean that something is definitely not right with him.

For the second consecutive start, Derek Holland couldn't make it out of the third inning. The Rangers lefty surrendered eight hits and five runs, four earned, in just 2 1/3 innings of work in the Rangers wild 13-11 win over the White Sox Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: This is the second straight horrible outing by Holland after he was as good as ever in his first five starts of the season. Do not be surprised to hear that there is something physically wrong with him. A pitcher of Holland's talent simply doesn't go from 3-1 with a sub-3.00 ERA to allowing 16 runs in five innings combined over his next two starts without something being amiss. Until things clear up, sit him on your bench.

Blue Jays batter Derek Holland

Thu, May 5th 11:03pm EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland was torched for 11 hits and 11 earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings by Toronto as the Blue Jays rolled the Rangers 12-2 Thursday.

Fantasy Impact: This might go down as one of the worst starts in not only Holland's career, but any pitcher's career. It came out of the blue too, as Holland had allowed just eight runs total in his first five starts and hadn't given up more than five hits in a game before Thursday's debacle.

Derek Holland scattered four hits over six shutout innings to lead the Texas Rangers to a 7-2 win over the Angels on Saturday. Holland improved to 3-1 on the year and lowered his season ERA to 2.48.

Fantasy Impact: Though Holland only recorded one strikeout on the night, the more important takeaway is the effectiveness in which he has pitched this season. After two injury-marred campaigns, Holland is pitching like he has something to prove.

Derek Holland earned his second victory of the season after allowing five hits and two runs over five innings of work in the Rangers' 7-5 win over Houston on Tuesday. Holland (2-0) walked one and struck out five on the night

Fantasy Impact: After two injury-marred seasons, Holland appears to be back into the swing of things. He still is laboring too much, as his 105 pitches over five innings would attest. Despite the deep counts, he only walked one which is a sign that he is battling through his control issues.

Derek Holland shuts down Mariners

Wed, Apr 13th 1:17am EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland tossed 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball to lead the Texas Rangers to a 8-0 blanking of Seattle tonight. Holland scattered four hits, walked two and struck out four in picking up his first win of the season.

Fantasy Impact: Admittedly, the Mariners are struggling offensively, but they could do nothing against Holland. This is a huge year for the lefty as he is coming off of two injury-marred seasons. A healthy and effective Holland, teamed with Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish when he returns, would give the Rangers a formidable trio at the top of the rotation.

A shaky start for Derek Holland

Fri, Apr 8th 1:42am EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland allowed four hits and three earned runs over five innings of work in the Rangers' 4-3 loss to the Angels Thursday. Holland walked two and struck out five on the night.

Fantasy Impact: The Rangers needed a quality start from Holland, and unfortunately, the lefty did not comply. Holland labored throughout, throwing 92 pitches in five innings, and only 57 of those for strikes.

Derek Holland allowed four hits and three runs in just three innings of work as the Rangers fell to the Indians 3-1 in the final game of Spring Training.

Fantasy Impact: Holland gave up a three-run home run to Rajai Davis that accounted for all of the runs. In his previous start, Holland surrendered grand-slam home run to the Dodgers' Justin Turner that erased a 4-0 Rangers lead. In all, the lefty gave up five home runs in the preseason. For the spring, Holland made seven starts, compiling a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 2.88. He allowed 30 hits in 25 innings and struck out 17 while walking nine. As he tries to regain his standing after missing most of the past two seasons, Holland will need to avoid the gopher balls that plagued him this spring.

Derek Holland surrendered a game-tying grand slam home run to Justin Turner, and the Rangers went on to give up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, falling to the Dodgers 5-4 tonight.

Fantasy Impact: Holland allowed six hits, walked one and struck out two. But after giving up back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth, Holland appeared to escape the threat when he induced a made-to-order double play ball to third. However, the ball was booted, and one out later, Turner launched a Holland fastball well over the center field fence.

Derek Holland picked up the victory in the Rangers 10-0 blanking of Kansas City today, but it wasn't an impressive outing by any stretch. Holland allowed three hits and walked one in just 1.2 innings of work.

Fantasy Impact: Holland is trying to rebound after another injury-plagued season in 2015. With Yu Darvish out until May, the Rangers need him to be the solid No. 2 behind Cole Hamels.

Derek Holland roughed up by Jays

Tue, Oct 13th 1:15am EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland was introduced early to the Toronto Blue Jays high-scoring offense in game four of the ALDS. Holland surrendered three home runs and six runs overall in just two innings of work as the Jays blasted the Rangers 8-4.

Fantasy Impact: This was especially disappointing for the Rangers as Holland is a veteran who could have helped the team clinch the series at home. Instead, he was simply awful and now the teams head back to Toronto for the series finale.

Category: , Game Recaps

It's been a rough last few outings for Derek Holland, but tonight he battled through some control issues to limit the Angels to three runs over 6.1 innings of work. Holland (4-3) walked three and struck out six in earning his first win since Sept. 5.

Fantasy Impact: Holland has struggled of late, and it would be doubtful that he would be used in a starting role in the playoffs at this point. Still, having a veteran left-hander that can throw several innings out of the bullpen is a bonus for the Rangers.

Category: , Game Recaps

Derek Holland allowed ten hits and five runs in just 5.2 innings of work in the Rangers 6-5 win over Houston on Tuesday. The win put the Rangers 1/2 game in front in the AL West.

Fantasy Impact: Staked to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Holland surrendered three runs in the top of the second and two more in the top of the fourth. Fortunately, his teammates picked him up and rallied for the win in the ninth inning.

Category: , Game Recaps

Derek Holland tossed a complete game three-hit shutout in just his fifth start since returning from a shoulder injury he suffered in April. Holland was superb, striking out 11 and not walking a batter in leading the Rangers to their fourth win in a row, and 13th win in their last 17 games.

Fantasy Impact: While the acquisition of Cole Hamels was important, the Rangers post-season hopes really centered around the return of Holland. The feeling was that if he could come out and do what he did at the end of last year when he was also coming off an injury, the Rangers chances looked good. A rotation of Hamels, Holland, Gallardo, Lewis and Perez is formidable. Next year, add in Yu Darvish and it's downright nasty!

Derek Holland impressive in return

Thu, Aug 20th 12:36am EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland allowed eight hits and two runs in 6.1 innings of work in the Rangers 7-2 win over Seattle today. Holland, making just his second start of the season, and his first since he lasted just one inning back on April 10, earned the victory to even his record at 1-1. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Fantasy Impact: This might be the most important start of the season for the Rangers team as a whole. If Holland can come in and provide consistent, quality starts, then a rotation of Cole Hamels, Yovani Gallardo, Colby Lewis, Martin Perez and Holland is pretty impressive.

Derek Holland threw 55 pitches in a rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock Tuesday night. While the final pitching line was not great - three hits, three walks and two runs (one earned) in just two-plus innings of work, the Rangers were happy that he was able to throw that many pitches, and also hit 95 mph on the radar gun. (Source:

Fantasy Impact: Holland is slated to pitch at Double-A Frisco on Sunday, and up his pitch count to the 60-70 range. He is expected to make at least two more rehab starts before the Rangers make a decision about activating him.

Texas Ranges' Derek Holland left the game Friday after 1 inning when he suffered a shoulder sprain. He will miss 4-6 weeks. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: It's another blow for the Rangers' pitching staff as they had already lost Darvish for the season. Holland missed most of last season after a freak accident where he injured himself tripping over his dog. It's difficult to know how his shoulder will respond after rest, but he'll hold no fantasy value for at least the next two months.

A so-so start for Derek Holland

Tue, Mar 31st 9:18pm EDT
By Mitch Cox

Derek Holland made his second start of the spring today, tossing 5.1 innings in the Rangers 15-10 split squad loss to the Cubs. Holland allowed six hits and five runs (four earned), walked two and struck out four.

Fantasy Impact: Certainly nothing to write home about, but for just his second start, nothing to be too ashamed of either. Holland gave up a home run to Matt Szczur in the fifth inning that helped the Cubs get back into the game. Holland will need to come up big for the Rangers this year with the loss of Yu Darvish if the team is going to have any chance of competing in the AL West.

Derek Holland was scratched from his scheduled one-inning intrasquad appearance due to what GM Jon Daniels called "normal shoulder soreness." (Source:

Fantasy Impact: With last year's Rangers team looking like a MASH unit, even the hint of an injury cropping up sends up red flags. Holland wanted to pitch on Sunday, but instead is slated to see the bump on Monday. If that gets scratched, then it's something to be concerned about. Remember, Holland is coming back from an injury last year, but it wasn't a shoulder injury--it was a knee injury. Perhaps it's just early season soreness, and for Rangers fans, that's what they're hoping for. I have Holland projected as a top-10 AL Cy Young candidate in 2015.

Pitcher Derek Holland, who missed most of the 2014 season due to a freak accident at home, slipped and fell in his shower during a 3.5 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday. Fortunately, this time, Holland escaped injury (Source:

Fantasy Impact: You know there's not much going on when a slip in the shower makes news, but this could have been catastrophic for the Rangers if something serious had happened. Perhaps Holland should wear heavy padding and a crash helmet whenever he's not at the ballpark.
