FanDuel NBA Value Plays: Friday (11/2)

FanDuel NBA Value Plays: Friday (11/2)

Another big Friday is here, with eight games to be played. There are two teams playing back-to-backs games – Thunder and Clippers both played on Thursday as well as having a game on Friday – so look at their lineups closely in case a regular starter rests, in which their backup could make an enticing value.

Preparing these Friday articles starts midweek, and it’s interesting to monitor how player prices fluctuate based on performance in the one or two games leading up to Friday. Sometimes a player I’d pegged as a value pick falls out of contention due to a stellar outing that drives up their price too far.

Conversely, there are some players whose price takes a dip due to a shoddy game, but if they are someone who has otherwise performed well, they could be a value play. There is some risk in picking a player who has just been through a bad game, in case that’s a continuing trend, but often it’s simply the result of game flow. This week I highlight a couple of such players whose share price has taken what is likely to be a temporary dip.

Point Guard

Cory Joseph (IND): $3,900 @ CHI
Joseph had a disastrous game on Monday against Portland, scoring one solitary fantasy point, but rebounded nicely on Wednesday with a 20 FPT effort. He has generally been solid, scoring 20+ FPTS in six of eight games played thus far, and can sometimes grab a couple of steals along the way. His salary went down due to that one-point calamity, and as result, he’s available for a bargain price. If you’re scanning for a sub-$4,000 player to complete your lineup, Joseph is worth a look.

Derrick Rose (MIN): $6,000 @ GS
I had penciled in Rose as a value play prior to his epic Wednesday night 50 point performance. His salary shot up $500 following that game, but it’s still in value territory when you factor in his upside potential. Here’s what I had written prior to Wednesday’s game when prepping this Friday article:

“Derrick Rose has maintained a 5.8 Pt/$1k ratio for his past three games. His consistency makes him one of the safer value options, and he will likely get you something in the high twenties. There’s still a shot of upside, as he scored an impressive 47.50 FPTS at Dallas on 10/20, and his season-low 14.8 FPTS came in the season opener. Since the Timberwolves are playing the Warriors, they’re going up have to put up considerable numbers to complete, so Rose should have a good fantasy night.”

Don’t expect anything close to a repeat of Wednesday’s performance. But the Timberwolves are bound to feature Rose heavily in what’s likely to be a high scoring affair.

Shooting Guard

Garrett Temple (ORL): $4,300 @ UTA
Temple has seen an increase in his FPTS in his last four games, the most recent being a 26.9 FPT effort against the Wizards. His salary increase isn’t quite keeping pace with his performance, making Temple a definite value play to consider.

Small Forward

Kelly Oubre Jr. (WAS): $4,500 vs OKC
Oubre’s play has fluctuated, partly due to illness, but he has been one of the more solid presences in a turbulent Wizards team. The Thunder are hot right now, having recovered from an 0-4 start by winning three in a row, so should be bringing it on Friday. The Wizards will need to respond and put up a lot of points of their own.

TJ Warren (PHO): $5,400 vs. TOR
Warren has scored double-digit points in all games except one so far this season. On Wednesday he made his first start of the season, rather than coming off the bench, and played for a season-high 36 minutes against the Spurs. Devin Booker (hamstring) remains out, which is giving Warren an increased role that will continue until his return. In his last two games, Warren has scored 30+ FPTS, and he has a solid chance to continue that trend.

Power Forward

Serge Ibaka (TOR): $6,300 @ PHO
Ibaka has been on fire in his last two games, yielding 40+ FPTs in each. On Friday the Raptors get the struggling Suns, so should be able to score with ease, even if they don’t have to score massively. Ibaka’s salary increased from $5,700 to $6,300 as a result of those two recent performances, but there’s still value to be had here.

Domantas Sabonis (IND): $6,000 @CHI
Given Sabonis’ performance on Wednesday, his salary could have been be higher for Friday. For $6,000 you’re getting a player who just scored a season-high 30 points, plus nine rebounds, in only 21 minutes (before fouling out). He is averaging a superb 70.7 percent shooting, together with 9.6 rebounds. His points totals are a bit up-and-down, averaging out to 14.4. As far as his FanDuel scoring goes, he is averaging 31 FPTS, and has broken the 40 FPT mark twice.

Center

Steven Adams (OKC): $7,500 @WAS / Nerlens Noel (OKC): $3,600 @ WAS
The Thunder are playing back-to-back games Thursday and Friday, which could result in rest for either of their centers. Starter Adams had been questionable with calf tightness prior to Tuesday’s game, but played for a double-double and 44 FPTS. So much for that ailment. Adams is averaging 34.5 minutes per game, and has grabbed double-digit rebounds in all but one contest (save for the one game he did sit out). Adams is a little bit expensive for a value play, but if you don’t want to pay top dollar for a center and still get a good return with minimal risk, Adams warrants a look.

If the Thunder do decide to rest Adams, then Nerlens Noel has all the hallmarks of a bargain play. He has a rock-bottom price right now, but in the game in which Adams sat and he started, Noel racked up 55 FPTs. He has fouled out early in a couple of games, so there is that risk to consider. However, for the price, the upside his huge. But only consider playing Noel if Adams sits.
