Top Multi-Position Players (2019 Fantasy Baseball)

Top Multi-Position Players (2019 Fantasy Baseball)

Spring training is officially in full swing, meaning fantasy baseball is right around the corner. The regular season kicks off in under a month.

Roster flexibility is an important part of any draft. Having multiple options at a position is crucial, as injuries occur frequently over the long 162-game season. An easy way to add versatility is by drafting multi-position options. Players who can slot into more than one spot around the diamond do wonders when filling an injury hole.

Here is an in-depth look at all the top hitters who are eligible at multiple positions.

Jose Ramirez (CLE – 2B/3B)
Ramirez is the crown jewel in this category heading into the 2019 season. He has an ADP of third overall coming off a season where he hit 39 home runs with 110 runs scored and 105 RBI. The ability to slot Ramirez at 2B or 3B makes him a surefire top pick in almost any format.

Manny Machado (SD – 3B/SS)
Machado also figures to be a fixture in the first-round conversation with his dual-eligibility. He smacked 37 home runs last season and batted .297 with 14 steals. He will be in the first year of his new 10-year deal with Padres, but do not fret. Petco is not the pitcher’s park that it once was, making Machado a fantastic choice in the first round.

Alex Bregman (HOU – 3B/SS)
Bregman makes it three options in the top-15 with multi-position eligibility. The 24-year-old had a breakout campaign last year with 31 home runs, 105 runs scored, 103 RBI, 10 steals, and a .286 average. He needs to boost his steals or bat over .300 to push his way into the top 10, though.

Javier Baez (CHC – 2B/3B/SS)
Baez, who has an ADP of 16 after his breakout 2018, is the first player with triple eligibility on this list. He popped 34 home runs with 101 runs, 111 RBI, and 21 steals with a .290 average. Be a bit cautious of a batting average decrease, though. Baez struck out 167 times last season and took just 29 walks. That is a recipe to bat closer to .270 than .290 in 2019.

Kris Bryant (CHC – 3B/OF)
Bryant is coming off an injury-plagued 2018 season, but how quickly fantasy managers can forget. In 2016, Bryant won the NL MVP with 39 home runs. He batted over .290 in back-to-back seasons before the injuries impacted his play last year. He turned 27 in January and figures to have a monster season if he can stay healthy. His ADP of 31 should rise in the coming weeks if Bryant looks back to full strength this spring. KB is also the first player mentioned with eligibility in both the infield and outfield in 2019.

Whit Merrifield (KC – 1B/2B/OF)
Merrifield is the first triple-eligible player who can play in both the infield and outfield. He is also the case of a late-bloomer who garners most of his value from stolen bases. Merrifield hit just 12 home runs in 2018, but the 45 steals with a .304 average vaulted him up the rankings. He has an ADP of 32 heading into the year and is a bit of a risky pick for a player who is past 30 years old and banking on another 40-steal season.

Rhys Hoskins (PHI – 1B/OF)
Hoskins heads back to first base this season after playing mostly in the outfield in 2018. He had 34 home runs last year, but only batted .246. Hoskins has an ADP of 40, which appears solid for the power hitter. Just know that the average and stolen bases will have to come from other sources.

Cody Bellinger (LAD – 1B/OF)
Bellinger played in all 162 games last season. The youngster turns 24 in July and is a more well-rounded option compared to Hoskins. Bellinger produced 25 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 2018 with a .260 average. He has an ADP of 45, but the power could take a step forward in 2019 and push him into a top-30 option.

Adalberto Mondesi (KC – 2B/SS)
Mondesi is an interesting case study in 2019. He only has 463 at-bats under his belt, but they have come over the last three seasons. He is also still only 23 years old and had 14 home runs and 32 steals in just 75 games last season. The question is, can Mondesi stay healthy and produce for a full season? His ADP of 63 suggests that fantasy managers believe in his upside, and it is difficult to resist.

Matt Carpenter (STL – 1B/2B/3B)
Carpenter set a new career-high with 36 home runs last season, as he once again sold out for power. He only hit .257, which puts fantasy managers in a bit of a pickle. Carpenter has shown the ability to hit near .300 with 12 home runs or .270 with 25 or .250 with 30. It all depends on which rung he is shooting for, but fantasy managers will not know until it happens. At his ADP of 64, Carpenter is still a fantastic option who will likely sell out for power again in 2019.

Daniel Murphy (COL – 1B/2B)
Murphy signed with the Rockies this offseason, and sign me up for his skill set in Coors Field. He figures to be near the NL-lead in batting average this season. Expect him to return to 25 home runs in a healthy season as well. The 33-year-old Murphy likely steals no more than five bases in 2019. His ADP is 85, and that is a nice value for a dual-eligible player with his abilities.

J.T. Realmuto (PHI – C/1B)
Traded to the Phillies, Realmuto escapes the pitcher-friendly Marlins Park, but drafting a catcher at his ADP of 54 is a bit rich for my blood. He hit 21 home runs with a .277 average in 2018, but that production would be drafted two rounds later if not for his catcher eligibility.

Wil Myers (SD – 3B/OF)
Myers has an ADP of 101 and provides a pleasant bargain if he can stay healthy. Injuries limited him to 83 games last season, but he had over 28 home runs and 20 steals in both 2016 and 2017. Adding in the fact that he can play third base and outfield makes Myers a worthy selection.

Joey Gallo (TEX – 1B/OF)
Gallo is the ultimate power option. He crushed north of 40 home runs the last two seasons but batted .209 and .206 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Gallo also stuck out 207 times last season, making him a true all-or-nothing hitter. Grabbing 40 homers at pick 98 sounds like a bargain, but it comes with holes elsewhere. Drafting Gallo is something managers must plan for in order to succeed.

Others Worth Mentioning:

Jonathan Villar (BAL – 2B/SS), Travis Shaw (MIL – 1B/2B/3B), Dee Gordon (SEA – 2B/OF), Max Muncy (LAD – 1B/2B/3B), Ryan Braun (MIL – 1B/OF), Jurickson Profar (OAK – 1B/2B/3B/SS), Ian Desmond (COL – 1B/OF), Buster Posey (SF – C/1B), Carlos Santana (CLE – 1B/3B), Miguel Sano (MIN – 1B/3B), Yulieski Gurriel (HOU – 1B/3B), Jake Bauers (CLE – 1B/OF)
