Unheralded Prospects to Target in Dynasty Leagues (2022 Fantasy Baseball)

Unheralded Prospects to Target in Dynasty Leagues (2022 Fantasy Baseball)

As each day passes, we are inching ever so close to the start of the 2022 baseball season. While heads of both sides continue to work towards a resolution, we’re staring at our dynasty rosters, wondering what improvements can be made.

The youth movement is taking over the game of baseball. The cream of the crop prospects like Bobby Witt Jr.Julio RodriguezGrayson Rodriguez, and Spencer Torkelson are all sitting comfortably on rosters in every league. Unless you’re willing to mortgage your entire roster to pry them away from their fantasy owners, scavenging through your league’s waiver wire is where you are going to find the next best thing in Minor League Baseball.

Now, who are the players you should be stashing on your rosters that no one has really caught onto yet?

Coby Mayo (3B – BAL)
After being drafted by the Orioles in the 4th round of the 2020 draft, it was clear they were targeting him when they gave him a signing bonus well-above-slot.

Mayo is an imposing figure for someone who is only 20 years old. Standing at 6’5” and 215 pounds, he possesses the kind of power potential that has dynasty owners salivating at what he may do at the Major League level. In his first full season in professional baseball, Mayo played in 26 games across two different levels and had a slash line of .329/.440/.566 with four home runs and 15 RBIs. Aside from his .236 ISO that he slugged in A-Ball, he also walked at a 12.8% clip and showed the plate discipline that has a lot of people inside the Orioles organization excited for what is to come from the young prospect.

Curtis Mead (2B/3B – TB)
You immediately think of success when you think of the Tampa Bay Rays and their farm system. The development of Wander FrancoJosh Lowe, and Shane Baz have people wondering, “how do they do it?” Now, what if I told you that underneath the shiny toys at the top, there is one player in their system that looks to be just another one of their next best players to come out of the Minors?

Curtis Mead was signed out of Australia during the 2018 International Signing period by the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his way over to the Rays in a trade that sent Cristopher Sanchez the other way. Although he has not found a true home on the field, his bat has made an impact in the everyday lineup. Mead has above-average raw power and the ability to possess above-average speed once he does get going. His ability to make consistent contact at the plate, and limit the strikeouts, make him someone that should be on everyone’s radar going forward.

Jose Salas (SS – MIA)
Coming out of the 2019 International Signing period, the Marlins made Salas a priority by giving him a $2.8M signing bonus. For someone his age, he has developed into an advanced hitter at the plate with a quick swing from both sides and excellent plate discipline to pair with it.

Salas has the potential to be a 20-25 home run bat that has, silently, developed into a really nice player in the Marlins system. His twitchy athleticism, strong arm, and good internal clock will help him be a fast riser through the Minor Leagues. Salas is one player that should be rostered in every dynasty league going forward.

Anthony Garcia (OF – NYY)
Although he wasn’t the player that made the headlines during the 2017 International Signing class for the Yankees, Anthony Garcia has surely made a name for himself in their system. The switch-hitting outfielder has quickly turned heads with his immense power potential that he has been able to showcase from both sides of the plate.

The Yankees have quickly progressed Garcia through their system from his first full season in pro baseball, where he made the jump from the Dominican Summer League to the Gulf Coast League and proceeded to lead the league with 10 home runs in only 44 games. The one caveat to his approach at the plate is the 42% strike-out rate that he had during that season.

While Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez continue to grab headlines through their progress in this system, Anthony Garcia’s quick ascension through this organization is not one that should be ignored.

Honorable Mentions

Eric Pardinho (RHP – TOR)

Joey Cantillo (LHP – CLE)

Ruben Cardenas (OF – TB)
