Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings: Carlos Rodon, Justin Steele, Adam Duvall

Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings: Carlos Rodon, Justin Steele, Adam Duvall

Welcome back to another edition of our weekly Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings!

The injured list continues to be a revolving door as we had a number of key names hit the IL over the last week while some activations have opened up some spots on our respective lists. Keep in mind these rankings aim to blend a player’s fantasy baseball value with the type/length of injury, as the longer the absence, the less inclined we are to stash a given player.

Let’s dive in and check out this week’s fantasy baseball injury stash rankings!

Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings

Top 10 Players to Stash Right Now

Aaron Judge (OF – NYY)
Cedric Mullins (OF – BAL)
Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)
Julio Urias (SP – LAD)
Carlos Rodon (SP – NYY)
Cody Bellinger (OF – CHC)
Brandon Woodruff (SP – MIL)
Oneil Cruz (SS – PIT)
Chris Sale (SP – BOS)
Brandon Lowe (2B – TB)

The top of this list got a major shakeup this week as reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge was placed on the injured list with a toe sprain suffered while plowing through the right field fence at Dodger Stadium while making a fantastic defensive play over the weekend. Obviously, fantasy managers will miss his elite cross-category production while his home run pace is eerily similar to his work from a season ago.

Twins outfielder Byron Buxton is back in familiar territory as he deals with a rib contusion. The oft-injured outfielder has limped to a .220 batting average to this point but has brought his power/speed combination to the table with 10 homers and six stolen bases across 182 at-bats. He and Cedric Mullins are actually very similar players, so feel free to swap them around near the top of this list.

These two injuries pushed the likes of Woodruff and Cruz down the list, as they aren’t expected back anytime soon. Woodruff is pegged for around the All-Star break, while we won’t see Cruz until the month of August.

The top 10 finishes off with a pair of fresh names in Chris Sale and Brandon Lowe. Sale’s injury woes continue as he deals with shoulder inflammation that forced him out of his last start after just 3 2/3 innings. The exact prognosis and timeline are unclear at this point, but he’s on the 15-day IL, and it doesn’t sound like he will be able to return when first eligible.

Finally, Lowe is being shut down for two-to-three weeks due to a herniated disc in his back. He’s hitting just .199 on the season but has nine home runs and three stolen bases to his credit. He cracks the top 10 primarily due to the fact that his power/speed production plays nicely at second base, where it can be difficult to find such a combination.

Top 8 Pitchers to Stash Right Now

Julio Urias (SP – LAD)
Carlos Rodon (SP – NYY)
Brandon Woodruff (SP – MIL)
Chris Sale (SP – BOS)
Max Fried (SP – ATL)
Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – DET)
Nick Lodolo (SP – CIN)
Justin Steele (SP – CHC)

Let’s address the elephant in the room here as the baseball world was rocked by the news that Texas Rangers superstar Jacob deGrom will require Tommy John surgery. He slid down our rankings as his elbow ailment lingered, but now there’s a real chance we won’t see deGrom pitching on a big league mound until the 2025 season or September 2024, at best. As a result, he’s not factoring into these rankings.

The news is solid with Carlos Rodon, who continues to make positive strides toward a return to action. He’s throwing live bullpen sessions at Yankee Stadium these days, with a return at the end of the month not out of the question.

A new name on this list is Cubs southpaw Justin Steele who is dealing with a forearm strain that is said to be minor. Of course, pitchers never want to be diagnosed with this type of injury given what it can lead to, but for now, the prognosis on Steele is positive, while Cubs skipper David Ross said he is on track to return June 17 against Baltimore.

Top 8 Hitters to Stash Right Now

Aaron Judge (OF – NYY)
Cedric Mullins (OF – BAL)
Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)
Cody Bellinger (OF – CHC)
Oneil Cruz (SS – PIT)
Brandon Lowe (2B – TB)
C.J. Cron (1B – COL)
Jazz Chisholm (2B, OF – MIA)

While Adam Duvall is still technically on the injured list, he is expecting to return when first eligible on Friday, so we’ll let him be for now, as he won’t require an IL spot beyond the next 24 hours.

Cody Bellinger is still in a holding pattern as he deals with a knee bruise. Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Bellinger will need a rehab assignment once he’s healthy, so it doesn’t appear as if his return is exactly imminent at this juncture.

C.J. Cron is at least a week away from beginning baseball activities, as per Rockies manager Bud Black, while Jazz Chisholm is easing back into baseball activities himself after getting a positive report from a foot specialist.
