Smash Spots

Michael King (SP – SD) vs. PIT

Michael King has been dominant at home, registering a 2.11 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 11 walks and 53 strikeouts in 38.1 innings.

Up next is a smash spot at Petco Park against the Pirates, who have a 75 wRC+ against righties, which ranks 29th in MLB.

Corbin Burnes (SP – ARI) vs. PIT

Corbin Burnes has turned the corner lately, allowing one run or fewer in three of his last four starts. This includes a 23:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past three turns.

Here’s another spot where we’re picking on the lackluster Pirates, who Burnes should mow through en route to another strong outing.

Nick Pivetta (SP – SD) – vs. MIA

Nick Pivetta is another Padre who has loved pitching at Petco, putting up a 1.44 ERA and 0.61 WHIP in 31.1 innings at home.

This is a great matchup against the Marlins, who have posted a 95 wRC+ against righties, which ranks 24th in MLB.

Risky Starts

Max Fried (SP – NYY) @ LAD

Max Fried has been an American League Cy Young candidate for the Yankees, registering a 1.29 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 15 walks and 60 strikeouts in 60.2 innings.

However, this is a tough spot on the road against a stacked Dodgers team that has posted a 130 wRC+ against lefties this year, which ranks third in MLB.

Nick Lodolo (SP – CIN) @ CHC

Nick Lodolo has been rock-solid for the Reds, posting a 3.22 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 10 walks and 49 strikeouts in 58.2 innings.

This is a risky spot, though, against one of the best offenses in the Cubs. If the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, this one could get ugly. But if we get favorable wind, there’s a chance this could turn from a tough spot to a good one.

Freddy Peralta (SP – MIL) @ PHI

Freddy Peralta has been much more hittable on the road, putting up a 3.98 ERA and 1.23 WHIP (compared to 0.75 ERA and 0.83 at home).

It doesn’t help that the road start will be at a hitter’s park against a tough Phillies lineup.

Two-Start Pitchers

Clay Holmes (SP – NYM) vs. COL, vs. CWS

Clay Holmes has posted a 3.13 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 20 walks and 53 strikeouts in 54.2 innings in what’s been a successful shift to the rotation.

Up next are two fantastic matchups against the Rockies (72 wRC+ versus right-handed pitching, 30th) and White Sox (78 wRC+ versus right-handed pitching, 28th).

Gavin Williams (SP – CLE) vs. LAD, vs. LAA

Gavin Williams seems to have turned the corner lately, allowing two runs or fewer in four consecutive outings. The Guardians righty has racked up six or more strikeouts in each game during this stretch.

While the first matchup in his two-start week is tough versus the Dodgers, that’s followed by an exploitable spot at home against the strikeout-prone Angels.

Ranger Suarez (SP – PHI) vs. ATL, @ MIL

Ranger Suarez continues to get it done for the Phillies, giving up a combined three runs in his last three turns, each of which he went for 6.2 innings or more.

While the matchups aren’t great against the Braves at home and on the road versus the Brewers, we’ve seen Suarez get on a roll and in a rhythm (as he is now). Remember that Suarez gave up a combined five runs in an eight-start stretch last year.

Top Streamers

Tomoyuki Sugano (SP – BAL) vs. STL, vs. CWS

Tomoyuki Sugano has been a rock-solid addition for the Orioles, allowing two runs or fewer in seven of his 10 starts this season.

While the first matchup in his two-start week is against an improving Cardinals offense, we should get a strong outing against the lowly White Sox.

Jameson Taillon (SP – CHC) vs. COL, vs. CIN

Jameson Taillon is like Tomoyuki Sugano in that there’s not much strikeout upside, but the quality starts are there. The veteran has given up two runs or fewer in five of his last seven outings.

Two starts at home are coming up next, as Taillon takes on the Rockies (30th in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching) and the Reds (T-19th in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching).

Hayden Birdsong (SP – SF) @ DET, @ MIA

Hayden Birdsong looked solid in his debut, tossing five scoreless innings against the Royals. Make sure to pick him up if he’s still available on the waiver wire in your league.

While the matchup against the Tigers (fifth in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching) is tough, Birdsong should cruise through the Marlins (24th in wRC+ versus right-handed pitching).
