Tight End Busts to Avoid: Overvalued Fantasy Football Picks
The tight end position is quite a unique one in fantasy football. The top performers stand out well above everyone else, and before you know it, as you look at the point totals, it tends to drop off a cliff in terms of production.
For example, in 2024, the TE1, Brock Bowers, scored 247.7 points in PPR leagues. The TE5, Travis Kelce, finished with just over 195.
That’s a pretty massive discrepancy.
Travis Kelce (TE – KC)
As mentioned, Travis Kelce was the TE5 last year with just over 194 points. Now, he’s being drafted as the TE7.
In 2025, he’ll turn 36 early in the season, and there are more variables to consider.
In 2024, the Chiefs dealt with injuries to Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice was hurt and out of the lineup and Xavier Worthy was in his rookie season.
As a result, Kelce hauled in 97 catches, but didn’t crack 825 receiving yards and scored just three times.
Now, those three receivers will be back in the lineup. The Chiefs selected Jalen Royals and a pass-catching running back/wide receiver in Brashard Smith, and the offensive line will likely be worse than in 2024.
I’m out on Kelce.
Cole Kmet (TE – CHI)
The Bears’ offense is loaded in 2025; the same was said in 2024.
As the primary go-to tight end, Kmet finished as the TE16 with then-rookie quarterback Caleb Williams throwing him the ball.
Kmet caught 47 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns.
That was a massive drop in production from 2023, when he caught 73 passes for 719 yards and six touchdowns.
While wide receiver Keenan Allen is gone, the Bears drafted tight end Colston Loveland early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That signals to me that Kmet, who could be out in 2026, will be a serviceable asset on this roster, but I believe his fantasy value is close to zero.
Sure, Loveland will have some growing pains at first, which may allow for Kmet to squeeze in some production. However, going as the TE25 ahead of Chig Okonkwo, Dalton Schultz and Ja’Tavion Sanders, Kmet is a hard pass for me.
Kmet’s replacement is right there with top-10 draft capital attached to him, and the team is now coached by one of the best offensive minds in Ben Johnson.
Take Kmet off your draft boards.
Taysom Hill (TE – NO)
Taysom Hill has never really been a guy you’d start each week. There’s usually some kind of hint of him being more involved leading up to a particular game, or he was a bye-week fill-in.
Well, in 2024, he averaged 12.9 points per game when he played, which was good enough for a TE5 finish. He scored 42.5 PPR points in Week 11 alone.
Now, Hill’s going as the TE39, and while he may have been a fun bench spot addition, I wouldn’t bother with him in 2025. He’s coming off a torn ACL, and there’s a new head coach in town. Also, Hill will turn 35 before the season begins.
I think this will easily be the worst season of his career.
