Smash Spots
Framber Valdez (SP – HOU) vs. BAL
Framber Valdez is having another strong season, putting up a 2.97 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 145.2 innings. Up next is a terrific spot at home against an Orioles lineup with an 83 wRC+ versus lefties (21st).
Shota Imanaga (SP – CHC) vs. PIT
Shota Imanaga should be able to shut down a Pirates offense that ranks 29th in wRC+ against southpaws, boosting his solid season-long numbers that include a 3.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
Brandon Woodruff (SP – MIL) vs. PIT
Brandon Woodruff has wildly exceeded expectations since returning from injury, putting up a 2.29 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in 35.1 innings. Expect the Brewers ace to have his way with the Pirates’ lineup.
Risky Starts
MacKenzie Gore (SP – WSH) vs. PHI
MacKenzie Gore came into Sunday’s action having allowed six or more earned runs in three of his last four outings. The lefty has hit a wall right now, making him a risky start against the Phillies.
Sonny Gray (SP – STL) vs. NYY
Sonny Gray has had a couple of blowup starts in the second half, including eight earned runs against the Diamondbacks, making it hard to trust him in a tough spot against the Yankees.
Michael King (SP – SD) @ LAD
Michael King only went two innings in his return from a lengthy trip to the injured list (IL). Expect the Padres frontline starter to be limited once again in a tough matchup against the Dodgers.
Two-Start Pitchers
Cade Horton (SP – CHC) @ TOR, @ PIT
Cade Horton has allowed zero earned runs in four consecutive starts. We have to ride the wave in this two-start week, which includes a tough matchup in Toronto and a great one on the road in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.
Jeffrey Springs (SP – ATH) vs. TB, vs. LAA
Jeffrey Springs is in a nice rhythm right now, allowing two earned runs or fewer in three consecutive outings, one of which came at home. It’s a good idea to roll with this red-hot pitcher at home versus the Rays and Angels.
Chris Paddack (SP – DET) @ CWS, @ MIN
Chris Paddack is coming off a poor outing against the Twins, but he had allowed one earned run in his previous two turns. Expect a bounce-back performance against the White Sox and a revenge outing in Minnesota.
