Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Waiver Wire Pickups

You should be grinding the fantasy baseball two-start pitchers to give you an advantage over your competition.

Each week, I will be giving you a breakdown of the two-start options for your fantasy leagues, broken up into the following tiers:

  • Must Start: The guys that you have to start because of their talent and/or matchups.
  • Should Start: These are the guys that are rostered in most formats and probably should be in your lineup.
  • Here We Go: Pitchers that you are probably starting in most formats, but have some level of risk to them.
  • Feeling Lucky: Pitchers that are risky, but viable in deeper formats.
  • Desperate Measures: Pitchers you shouldn’t use unless you have no other choice.

Make sure you are aware that when making fantasy baseball start or sit decisions that these projected two-start pitchers are subject to change.

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers

Must Start

Should Start

Gavin Williams (SP – CLE) at ARI, at TEX

Gavin Williams has been fantastic since the All-Star break, throwing 30.2 innings with a 2.35 ERA and 32 strikeouts. He has some blow-up potential, as we saw in his last start, but he has been so good that you have to use him.

Michael Wacha (SP – KC) vs. TEX, at DET

Michael Wacha has been about as steady as can be this season. He doesn’t deliver many strikeouts, but he goes deep enough into games to qualify for a win and gives you great ratios. He is pretty close to a must start in all formats.

Jacob Lopez (SP – ATH) at MIN, at SEA

Jacob Lopez has been on a tear recently, throwing 24 scoreless innings over four starts with 28 strikeouts. He has tremendous upside, but there is also a lot of downside when he struggles with control. His upside is so massive, and he has been so hot recently, you are using him until he hits a speed bump.

Here We Go

Jack Flaherty (SP – DET) vs. HOU, vs. KC

Jack Flaherty is a very frustrating pitcher to roster. He has tons of upside, and you see it, but then he struggles with homers that ruin outings. He has a tough matchup to start the week and an easier one to end it, so he is a risky play anywhere despite the name value.

Seth Lugo (SP – KC) vs. TEX, vs. DET

Seth Lugo has struggled as of late, but he is normally a pretty safe bet for ratios and wins. He has a decent matchup to start the week, but then faces a good Tigers offense at the end of the week. You are only starting him if you need ratio help.

Brady Singer (SP – CIN) at LAA, at ARI

Brady Singer is the Charlie Brown of fantasy baseball. Every time he shows that he can be a good starter, he then misses the football and falls on his butt. These aren’t terrible matchups, and he is away from Cincy, but the Angels do hit homers, and the Diamondbacks can hit well, so it is a risk.

Feeling Lucky

Spencer Arrighetti (SP – HOU) at DET, at BAL

Spencer Arrighetti has amazing stuff, but he can’t control or command it regularly. That leads to massive blow-up potential. There is a ton of strikeout upside, and he is on a great team, but the risk may not be worth the reward.

Jack Leiter (SP, RP – TEX) at KC, vs. CLE

Jack Leiter has really good stuff, but the command and control are spotty. If he can find the zone, he can light up the scoreboard with strikeouts, but even with two good matchups in good parks, he is a risk.

Zac Gallen (SP – ARI) vs. CLE, vs. CIN

Zac Gallen just is not the same pitcher that he used to be. His stuff is not as good, and it shows in the numbers and when you watch him. He does still go deep into games, and the results have been better lately, but there is still blowup potential, even at home in good matchups.

Nestor Cortes (SP – SD) vs. SF, vs. LAD

I love Nestor Cortes, and he is a good pitcher, but since coming to San Diego, he has not been allowed to go five innings in either of his starts. That makes him tough to use, especially with a tough matchup against the Dodgers at the end of the week.
