Top 50 Starting Pitchers (April 20th to April 26th)
Smash Spots
Jacob deGrom (SP – TEX) vs. PIT
Jacob deGrom has shown zero signs of decline so far, so we need to enjoy his production while it lasts. Hopefully, he can stay healthy. Up next is a smash spot at home in a pitcher-friendly environment against the Pirates.
Logan Gilbert (SP – SEA) vs. ATH
Logan Gilbert is starting to get into a rhythm, which means deep outings with a lot of strikeout upside. Facing the strikeout-prone A’s at home could be a spot where Gilbert hits his ceiling.
Freddy Peralta (SP – NYM) vs. COL
Freddy Peralta should be able to cruise through the Rockies at home. Colorado has the highest strikeout rate in the Majors, so this is a spot where we could see eight or more punchouts.
Risky Starts
Emmet Sheehan (SP – LAD) vs. CHC
Emmet Sheehan showed improvement last week, but there has still been enough inconsistency to give us a slight pause against a patient Cubs lineup.
Logan Webb (SP – SFG) vs. LAD
Logan Webb has been underwhelming, so we need to tread lightly with a matchup against the Dodgers. The good news is that at least it’s a home start.
Michael King (SP – SDP) @ ARI
Michael King is coming off a strong outing at home against the Mariners, but the Diamondbacks have a pesky lineup that puts the ball in play a lot, which limits King’s upside in a road start.
Two-Start Pitchers
Nolan McLean (SP – NYM) vs. MIN, vs. COL
Nolan McLean is quickly becoming my favorite pitcher to watch. The movement on his pitches is truly incredible. We just saw him shut down the Dodgers on the road.
Emerson Hancock (SP – SEA) vs. ATL, @ STL
Emerson Hancock has been an early-season breakout. We have to ride the wave while he’s in a rhythm, fresh off a strong outing versus the Padres.
Mick Abel (SP – MIN) @ NYM, @ TBR
Mick Abel followed up a strong outing against the Tigers with a dominant one against the Red Sox. Let’s see if he can build on that with a two-step this week versus the Mets and the Rays.
