Tuesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings (6/9)
Chase Burns (SP – CIN) at San Diego Padres
Chase Burns is carving up the opposition this year. According to FanGraphs, in 12 games spanning 70.1 innings this year, Burns has logged the following stats:
- 7 wins
- 8 quality starts
- 2.05 ERA
- 2.89 xERA
- 3.19 xFIP
- 3.18 SIERA
- 0.95 WHIP
- 7.7% walk rate
- 29.7% strikeout rate
- 15.4% SwStr%
- 29.1% CSW%
- 112 stuff+
- 102 location+
- 116 pitching+
Burns has a fantastic matchup and rock-solid betting info tonight. The Padres are tied for 28th in wRC+ (87) with a 23.3% strikeout rate versus righties and 27th in wRC+ (83) with a 22.2% strikeout rate at home in 2026. The Reds are listed at -118 on the Moneyline, and the game’s total is a pitcher-friendly 7.5 runs.
Dustin May (SP – STL) at New York Mets
Dustin May is in good form after an ugly start. In his past five starts, totaling 30 innings, May has tallied the following stats:
- 0 wins
- 3 quality starts
- 3.90 ERA
- 3.22 xERA
- 3.46 xFIP
- 3.35 SIERA
- 1.00 WHIP
- 8.1% walk rate
- 28.2% strikeout rate
- 13.4% SwStr%
- 31.4% CSW%
- 105 stuff+
- 101 location+
- 105 pitching+
The Mets have turned it around at the dish. Nevertheless, they’re tied for 26th in wRC+ (90) with a 21.7% strikeout rate versus righties and 21st in wRC+ (98) with a 21.5% strikeout rate at home this year.
May’s betting info isn’t ideal, with the Cardinals listed as +110 underdogs. Still, the game’s total of eight runs isn’t particularly threatening.
Walbert Urena (SP – LAA) vs. Houston Astros
Walbert Urena has excelled at home in his rookie season — 2.12 ERA, 3.83 xFIP, 1.06 WHIP, 11.6% walk rate and 24.6% strikeout rate across 34 innings. His 2.68 ERA and 3.31 xERA over 11 appearances (nine starts) are stellar, though his 4.27 xFIP and 4.53 SIERA leave much to be desired.
The righty’s matchup has mixed data. The Astros are tied for 11th in wRC+ (103) with a 22.2% strikeout rate versus righties and fourth in wRC+ (111) with an 18.8% strikeout rate on the road this season. However, Houston is 21st in wRC+ (90) with a 23.3% strikeout rate in the previous 30 days. Urena’s salary makes him an intriguing GPP pick on DraftKings.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
- Road (Coors Field)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 12.5 Runs/CHC -155
The Cubs will get a lift from playing at Coors Field and facing Tomoyuki Sugano. His 3.98 ERA in a dozen starts is markedly lower than his 7.52 xERA, 4.94 xFIP and 5.02 SIERA.
The righty has permitted a .362 wOBA to lefties and a .320 wOBA to righties since last year. The Rockies are also dead last in bullpen ERA (5.30) this season. Chicago’s offense should erupt tonight.
- Road (Oracle Park)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 8.5 Runs/WSH -105
Adrian Houser owns a 5.49 ERA, 5.41 xERA, 4.85 xFIP and 5.00 SIERA in 12 starts for the Giants this year. The veteran righty is more punching bag than big-league-caliber starting pitcher.
Houser is at his worst against lefties, surrendering a .391 wOBA to 435 of them since last season. Washington’s left-handed batters and switch-hitters are the most appealing stacking options from the Nationals.
Core Studs
- CJ Abrams has hit 14 homers with 42 runs, 51 RBI, 10 stolen bases, a .382 on-base percentage (OBP), .244 ISO, .395 wOBA and 154 wRC+ in 283 plate appearances this season.
- Pete Crow-Armstrong has hit 41 homers with a .309 OBP, .216 ISO, .332 wOBA and 114 wRC+ in 959 plate appearances against right-handed pitching since 2024.
- Michael Conforto has drilled four dingers with 12 runs, 13 RBI, one stolen base, a .356 OBP, .239 ISO, .368 wOBA, .372 expected wOBA (xwOBA) and 138 wRC+ in 104 plate appearances this year.
Value Plays/Punts
- Luis Garcia Jr. has hit seven homers with 24 runs, 38 RBI, two stolen bases, a .288 OBP, .187 ISO, .319 wOBA and 102 wRC+ in 212 plate appearances this season.
- Matt Chapman has slugged 10 homers with a .348 OBP, .168 ISO, .331 wOBA and 114 wRC+ in 362 plate appearances against southpaws since 2024.
- Jose Tena is cap-friendly, left-handed exposure to Houser. Tena’s greatest value to DFS squads beyond his handedness against a pitcher who can’t handle lefties is the cap space he frees up to jam Chase Burns and high-end hitters into a lineup together.
