Merrill Kelly earns victory in season debut Tuesday

by David Leisering | Diamondbacks Correspondent | Wed, Apr 15th 6:23am EDT

Merrill Kelly made his season debut on Tuesday and allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the Orioles, 4-3. Kelly walked four and struck out three in picking up the win.

Fantasy Impact:

Kelly earned the victory despite allowing nine baserunners in his 5.1 innings of work. His command got away from him in the third as he allowed a single and then three consecutive walks as Baltimore took a 2-0 advantage. Kelly then got help from his catcher, James McCann, in the fourth as the veteran backstop picked off Baltimore's Jeremiah Jackson at third base with one out before Kelly struck out Gunnar Henderson to end the inning. All in all, it was a promising debut for the Arizona ace as he threw 86 pitches and should continue rounding into form over the next couple of starts. Kelly will take a 3.38 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP into his second start of the year against the White Sox next Tuesday.
