Arizona Diamondbacks

NL West

Nick Ahmed agreed to a four-year extension on Monday. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Ahmed’s four-year extension is worth a guaranteed $32.5 million. He set career-highs in average (.255), OBP (.318), homers (19) and RBI (82) last season. Ahmed who is known as elite defender, should see plenty of at-bats as Arizona’s starting shortstop. He is currently the 37th shortstop on the consensus rankings, and is worth a late round flyer in mixed-league drafts.

Steve Gilbert of MLB.com writes Zac Gallen will have to earn the final spot in Arizona's rotation this spring. (Source: MLB.com)

Fantasy Impact: D'Backs manager Torey Lovullo indicated that Gallen will get "strong consideration" for the job but wouldn't fully commit to the young right-hander. Madison Bumgarner, Robbie Ray, Mike Leake, and Luke Weaver figure to get the first four spots. That would leave Gallen competing with Alex Young and Merrill Kelly for the final turn through the order. There's an argument to be made that Gallen is currently the best pitcher on the Diamondbacks pitching staff so we aren't too worried about him winning the job. He posted 2.5 WAR in just 80 innings between Miami and Arizona last season.

Taijuan Walker started Sunday's regular season finale versus the Padres and threw a scoreless inning.

Fantasy Impact: It was the only inning Walker threw in 2019 as he was recovering from major elbow and shoulder surgeries. The 27-year-old will compete for a spot in the Arizona rotation next spring.

Christian Walker went 2-for-5 with two homers, a walk, and five RBI as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-5 on Saturday night.

Fantasy Impact: With just one game left in the year Walker is batting .259 with 29 homers and an .825 OPS. He also has eight stolen bases in what was a breakout season for him.

Robbie Ray received a no-decision on Saturday against the Padres, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings pitched.

Fantasy Impact: Ray struck out 10 and walked three in the outing, which the D'Backs went on to win 6-5. This was his seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season. He finishes the year with a 12-8 record, a 4.34 ERA, and 235 strikeouts in 174 1/3 innings.

Merrill Kelly allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings pitched on Wednesday versus the Cardinals.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly earned the win despite the five earned runs, also striking out seven and walking two in the outing. The 30-year-old finishes the season with a 13-14 record and a 4.42 ERA. He'll be a streaming option to start the 2020 fantasy season.

Mike Leake received a no-decision on Tuesday against the Cardinals, allowing just one run on five hits over six strong innings.

Fantasy Impact: Leake struck out three and walked two in the outing, which the D'Backs eventually went on to win 3-2 in 19 innings. Leake has now given up three earned runs or less in six straight starts, finishing the season with a 4.29 ERA.

Archie Bradley struck out the side in an inning of work as the D'Backs beat the Cardinals 3-2 in 19 innings on Tuesday night.

Fantasy Impact: Bradley has been excellent for the entire second half and Tuesday's scoreless inning was no different. The 27-year-old has 16 saves this year and will likely enter 2020 as Arizona's top ninth-inning option.

Adam Jones went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI in Arizona's loss to the Cardinals on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: It was his third straight game with an RBI. Jones is batting .263 with 16 homers, 66 RBI, and a .731 OPS this year as we approach late-September. He showed he still has some juice left in the tank this year but ultimately isn't a difference-maker in fantasy leagues. He'll be a free agent once again this off-season.

Category: Game Recaps

Eduardo Escobar went 1-for-5 with a single and an RBI in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Cardinals.

Fantasy Impact: The RBI was Escobar's 118th of the season, which is tied for the third most in the National League. Escobar has also totaled 30 homers, five steals, and an .839 OPS this year. He'll be going much higher in drafts next year than he was this past spring.

Alex Young fell to 7-5 on Monday versus St. Louis, giving up six runs on seven hits over five innings pitched.

Fantasy Impact: Young struck out five and walked two in the outing. Most of the damage came via a season-high three homers allowed, however. The 26-year-old lefty has mostly been solid this season and this was his first bad start in a while. He'll carry a 3.74 ERA into a final start against the Padres on Sunday.

Luke Weaver (elbow) will start for the D'Backs on Saturday versus San Diego. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Weaver will be making his first start since May and is expected to be on a pitch count. He was excellent before going down with an elbow injury, posting a 3.03 ERA through 11 starts.

Ketel Marte has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back and will be shut down for the rest of the season. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Marte was removed from Tuesday's game due to a stiff back, and the team announced Friday that he'll be shut down for the year. He won't require surgery and is expected to be ready to go for the start of the 2020 season. He wraps up an incredible breakout season in which he batted .329 with 32 homers and 92 RBI.

Jake Lamb went 1-for-3 with a double and four RBI in Arizona's 7-5 win over the Marlins on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: The highlight was a bases-loaded double by Lamb, which drove in three. The veteran infielder is now hitting .201 with five homers and 26 RBI this year. He doesn't have any fantasy value.

Category: Game Recaps

Carson Kelly went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Arizona's 7-5 win over the Reds on Friday.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly was on fire for most of the summer before cooling down a bit in August. Still, it's been a great first year in Arizona for the young catcher. Overall he's batting .260 with 18 homers and an .890 OPS.

Category: Game Recaps

Jarrod Dyson went 0-for-5 with a walk and a run scored in Arizona's 14-7 win over the Padres on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: Unfortunately Dyson wasn't able to contribute much to Arizona's offensive explosion. However, he is really only useful for fantasy when it comes to stolen bases. Dyson has 28 of those here in early-September.

Category: Game Recaps

Josh Rojas went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, two RBI, and three runs scored in the D'Backs' 14-7 win over the Padres on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: The homer was his second in 17 games with the D'Backs. Rojas had gotten off to a slow start with Arizona but is now riding a five-game hitting streak. Still, he won't have much fantasy value unless he sustains this production for a bit longer.

David Peralta will require surgery on his right shoulder and is set to miss the rest of 2019. (Source: Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Peralta landed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with shoulder inflammation, and will need surgery to correct the issue. He will be shut down for the rest of the season. It’s unclear at this time if he will be ready for spring training.

Jon Duplantier was optioned to Triple-A Reno. (Source: Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Duplantier was called up earlier in the week and pitched two innings of relief in Friday's game, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out two. Taylor Clarke was recalled in a corresponding move.

Yoshihisa Hirano was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with right elbow inflammation. (Source: Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Hirano gave up a long ball Friday; it was his second straight outing allowing a homer after he allowed a total of three home runs in his first 53 appearances of the season. His elbow issue is likely the cause of his recent struggles. Hirano will be eligible to return from the IL August 27th.
