Arizona Diamondbacks

NL West

The Blue Jays acquired RHP Joakim Soria from the Arizona Diamondbacks. (Source: Ben Nicholson-Smith on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Soria won't close with the Jays, but he'll provide valuable bullpen depth down the stretch. This move kills any fantasy value he had while earning saves with Arizona.

Fantasy Impact: Lawlar was once rumored to go No. 1 overall to the Pirates, but he wound up falling to No. 6 to Arizona. He'll sign for a bit more than the recommended slot value, but its a trade-off that the Diamondbacks will gladly make. Lawlar is a consensus top-five selection in first year player drafts this offseason.

Catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the D-Backs' 3-2 win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Fantasy Impact: Varsho came up clutch in this one as he cracked a solo homer off of Brett Martin in the top of the eighth inning to put the Diamondbacks up 3-2. It would prove to be the game-winner in this low-scoring affair. After a horrendous start to the season, Varsho has come alive over the last 15 games, swatting five homers. Overall, he's slashing .204/.318/.381 to go along with five home runs, 16 RBI, and three stolen bases over 113 at-bats.

Outfielder David Peralta went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, and two strikeouts as the Diamondbacks defeated the Rangers 3-2 on Wedensday.

Fantasy Impact: Peralta took Jordan Lyles deep in the top of the second inning to put the D-Backs on the board. It was his first homer since way back on May 15. The veteran outfielder would also reach base with a walk in the contest. For the season, he's slashing .253/.327/.401 to go along with five home runs, 45 RBI, and one stolen base over 332 at-bats. The lack of power has really diminished his fantasy value this year.

RHP Tyler Clippard earned the save on Wednesday when he gave up a walk and a hit with two strikeouts over a scoreless ninth inning in the D-Backs' 3-2 win over the Rangers.

Fantasy Impact: The D-Backs' typical closer, Joakim Soria, worked the eighth inning in this contest. He earned a hold before turning the ball over to Clippard who was tasked with preserving the one-run lead. He got two quick strikeouts before running into a little trouble, giving up a walk and a single Curtis Terry and Charlie Culberson, respectively. He settled down after that and got Jose Trevino to line out to end the contest. This was Clippard's first save of the season and he could take over the role entirely if Soria is shipped off before Friday's trade deadline.

LHP Madison Bumgarner earned the win on Wednesday when he allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts over seven innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the Rangers 3-2.

Fantasy Impact: Mad Bum was dialed in on Wednesday, reaching seven innings for the third time this season. He allowed a pair of runs in the fourth inning via a single and a sacrifice fly. He only allowed five base runners in total and punched out four. The solid outing gives him a 4.87 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 73:20 K/BB ratio over 77 2/3 innings (15 starts). He'll face his former team, the Giants, at home in his next start.

Diamondbacks infielder Eduardo Escobar is headed to the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade, according to multiple reports. Jeff Passan reports that Triple-A catcher Cooper Hummel is headed to the Diamondbacks in the deal. (Source: Jeff Passan on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: The Brewers have one of the best starting rotations in baseball but have struggled with consistency throughout their lineup in 2021. The veteran Escobar is batting .246 with 50 runs scored, 22 home runs, 65 RBI, and one stolen base this season.

Outfielder Kole Calhoun went 2-for-4 with an RBI double as the Diamondbacks lost to the Rangers 5-4 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Calhoun put the D-Backs on the board in the top of the third inning when he smacked an RBI double off of starter Dane Dunning that scored Daulton Varsho. He also singled in the contest. The 33-year-old outfielder is batting .225 with a .611 OPS, two home runs, eight RBI, and one stolen base over 89 at-bats.

First baseman Christian Walker went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk as the Diamondbacks lost to the Rangers 5-4 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Walker reached three times on Tuesday with a pair of singles and a walk. He knocked in a run in the eighth inning with an RBI single as the D-Backs attempted to come back from a 5-2 deficit. Walker has had a disappointing season as have most of the D-Backs. He's slashing .232/.293/.346 with four home runs and 23 RBI over 228 at-bats.

RHP Taylor Widener allowed five runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings as the D-Backs lost to the Rangers 5-4 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Widener made it through the first three innings unscathed, despite allowing six base runners. He ran into big trouble in the fourth frame as he allowed a two-run double to Nathaniel Lowe and a three-run homer to Joey Gallo. He was yanked at 3 2/3 innings and the D-Backs were unable to take the lead so he was saddled with the loss. The 26-year-old hurler now owns a 4.42 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 36:16 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings. He'll get the Giants at home in his next start.

Ketel Marte (hamstring) has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. (Source: Zach Buchanan on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Marte is playing in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday night. He could rejoin the D'Backs in early August if all goes well from here.

First baseman Pavin Smith went 2-for-5 with a double as the Diamondbacks lost to the Cubs 5-1 on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: Smith was one of two D-Backs to record an extra-base hit as the team couldn't get much going on offense. The 25-year-old rookie has been feeling it at the dish over the last seven games, slashing .348/.483/.696 to go along with two home runs, three RBI, and six walks. Overall, he's got a .260/.332/.422 batting line with nine home runs, 31 RBI, and one stolen base over 342 at-bats.

LHP Caleb Smith took the loss on Sunday when he surrendered five runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over six innings in the D-Backs' 5-1 loss to the Cubs.

Fantasy Impact: Smith was victimized by the long ball on Sunday, coughing up three homers. Kris Bryant (two-run) and Anthony Rizzo went back-to-back in the first inning before David Bote cracked a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the fourth. Smith didn't help himself with three free passes but punched out eight, which tied a season-high. He now owns a lackluster 4.61 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 96:42 K/BB ratio over 84 innings (29 appearances, 11 starts). He'll get the Dodgers at home in his next start but isn't a recommended fantasy option.

Infielder Andrew Young went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the D-Backs' 7-3 win over the Cubs on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: Young tacked on a pair of insurnace runs in the top of the ninth inning when he smacked a two-run, pinch-hit homer off of Rex Brothers to put Arizona up 7-2. The seldom-used infielder has 11 hits on the season and six of them have left the yard. He's got a .998 OPS over 49 at-bats. He could see a bump in playing time post-trade deadline, depending on what moves the D-Backs make.

RHP Merrill Kelly earned the win on Saturday when he allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk over six innings as the D-Backs took down the Cubs 7-3.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly did his job on Saturday, limiting the Cubs to just two runs over his six innings of work. Javier Baez grounded into a double play that scored a run in the third inning and Willson Contreras swatted a solo homer off of him in the fourth. He also punched out six batters for the second consecutive start. The 32-year-old owns a 7-7 record, 4.39 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 105:28 K/BB ratio over 123 innings (21 starts). Kelly has been drawing trade interest so there's a chance that this could have been his last start in a Diamondbacks uniform. If not, he'll face the Dodgers at home in his next turn.

The Diamondbacks have placed infielder Josh Rojas on the 10-day injured list. He hasn’t appeared in a game since dislocating his pinkie finger on Wednesday. His roster spot will go to Asdrubal Cabrera, who was activated from the IL.

Fantasy Impact: Through 93 games this year, Rojas is slashing .268/.356/.438 with 10 homers, 28 RBI, 44 walks, and 91 strikeouts. He’s also had an impact on the basepaths, logging seven stolen bases so far this year.

The Diamondbacks announce they have activated infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, Josh Rojas lands on the IL.

Fantasy Impact: Cabrera returns with about one week until the MLB trade deadline, which could end up being beneficial for his trade stock. Teams will surely be interested in someone like Cabrera who provides a veteran presence and offers versatility at several positions. He’s also been serviceable offensively, posting a .240/.332/.385 slash line this year.

RHP Zac Gallen was demolished on Friday afternoon when he allowed seven runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts over four innings as the D-Backs lost 8-3 to the Cubs.

Fantasy Impact: Gallen was taken to the cleaners in this one and his troubles started in the first inning. He served up a three-run blast to Javier Baez in the opening frame before Anthony Rizzo scored on a wild pitch in the third. Nico Hoerner slapped a two-run single in the same inning and Robinson Chirinos capped off the scoring with a solo dinger in the fourth. The seven earned runs were the most Gallen has given up all year in what has been a lost season. He'll carry a 4.80 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 61:26 K/BB ratio over 50 2/3 innings (11 starts) into a home start against the Dodgers.

Shortstop Nick Ahmed went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and a run scored as the Diamondbacks defeated the Pirates 11-6 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Ahmed knocked in a pair of runs with two RBI singles, one in the fifth inning and one in the seventh. He also reached base with a walk in the contest. The 31-year-old shortstop has been underwhelming for much of the season and most likely wouldn't be playing every day were it not for his defense. He's slashing .216/.283/.313 with two home runs, 19 RBI, and five stolen bases over 268 at-bats.

Second baseman Josh VanMeter went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, three RBI, and a run scored as the Diamondbacks beat the Pirates 11-6 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: VanMeter did most of his damage in the seventh inning when he bookended an eight-run rally in the seventh inning. He started things off with an RBI triple to open up the scoring and capped it off with a two-run double to complete the scoring run. The 26-year-old is now slashing .202/.301/.363 with three home runs and 17 RBI over 143 at-bats on the year.
