Arizona Diamondbacks

NL West

The Diamondbacks released starting pitcher Edwin Jackson. (Source: J.J. Cooper on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: The D'Backs have released 37 minor leaguers this week, Jackson among them. The veteran right-hander put up an ugly 9.58 ERA between the Blue Jays and Tigers last year. The 36-year-old was a sixth-round pick by the Dodgers way back in 2001.

Fantasy Impact: Snider hit well in Triple-A last year, batting .294/.402/.497 across 368 plate appearances. The former top prospect hasn't played in the big leagues since 2015, however. He will likely have to wait until 2021 to sign with another club.

MLB reportedly is considering playing all games in empty ballparks in Arizona. (Source: Ronald Blum of the Associated Press)

Fantasy Impact: The idea is in the early stage and there are many obstacles to overcome. Playing in Arizona would give MLB Chase Field as well as 10 other spring training ballparks. MLB is still figuring out a way to have a 2020 season during the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 campaign is currently delayed until further notice.

Jon Duplantier was optioned to the Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate in Reno. (Source: AZ Sports on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: This move isn't surprising as Duplantier struggled this spring. Over six innings of work he posted a 1.33 K/BB ratio and a whopping 9 BB/9. He figured to be the odd man out for the final rotation spot and with the season temporarily on hold, Duplantier can't improve his body of work. He will likely be called up for some relief work whenever the season gets underway.

Madison Bumgarner allowed three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings Monday against the Royals. He struck out four.

Fantasy Impact: This was by far Bumgarner's best spring start, nearly completing four scoreless innings. After the game, Bumgarner commented that he felt great and that all of his pitches were working well. He'll likely get the nod for the Diamondbacks Opening Day game.

Luke Weaver may have his workload monitored early on in the 2020 season. General Manager Mike Hazen has said that the team will be 'cognizant' of his workload. (Source: Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com)

Fantasy Impact: Weaver was limited to 64.1 innings in 2019 due to a forearm injury, and has never exceeded 140.1 innings in a season in his professional career. This could mean Weaver will be on a pitch count, or the Diamondbacks may insert a sixth starter into the rotation.

Zac Gallen allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out two and walking a pair over 3.2 innings in Saturday's 6-6 tie against the Angels.

Fantasy Impact: Gallen has now given up five earned runs over 8.0 innings with a 7/3 K/BB ratio so far this spring. The hype continues to build for the 24-year old who's current ADP is at 131 per FantasyPros. He's becoming a favorite breakout candidate of the fantasy community and his stock should continue to rise as we get closer to the start of the season. While he hasn't been guaranteed a rotation spot yet by manger Torey Lovullo he'll have a few more opportunities to "earn" a spot before opening day.

Carson Kelly went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored Friday against the Rockies.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly is 3-for-11 so far this spring. He emerged as the Diamondbacks' primary catcher partway through 2019, and is poised to serve the same role in 2020.

Diamondbacks second baseman Domingo Leyba has been suspended (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Leyba tested positive for Boldenone, a perfomancing enhancing substance, according to beat writer Nick Piecoro. Leyba is the Diamondbacks Number 30 prospect per MLB pipeline and appeared in 21 games at the major league level last season, producing a triple slash line of .280/.367/.440. His suspension will begin at the start of the regular season.

Robbie Ray gave up one earned run on three hits while striking out three in 4.0 innings while earning the win against the Rangers on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact: Ray was solid in this one, striking out two batters in the first and only giving up three hits over four innings. His only blemish was a solo home run to Adolis Garcia in the bottom of the third inning. Ray put up a 4.34 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 235/84 K/BB ratio over 174.1 innings in 2019. The lefty has always had high strikeout upside (11.1 K/9 for his career) but it's gone hand-hand with a career 4.1 BB/9. If you can stomach his inconsistency and high walk rate he makes for a solid fourth or fifth starter in standard mixed leagues.

Merrill Kelly allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings Monday against the Giants.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly made his first appearance in a relief role last week, but is now building up to a starter's workload. He's not guaranteed a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation, but he may find himself there if Mike Leake (wrist) is not ready for the start of the regular season.

Mike Leake (wrist) may not be ready to join the rotation for Opening Day, according to manager Torey Lovullo. (Source: Richard Morin of Arizona Republic)

Fantasy Impact: Leake fractured his non-throwing wrist this offseason, and has been able to work in bullpen sessions. He hasn't been able to see any game action as of yet, so his status for Opening Day is squarely in doubt. If Leake is not a part of the rotation at the start of the regular season, Merrill Kelly may fill in at the back end of the rotation.

Christian Walker is making a slow start to ramping up Spring Training workouts due to general body soreness, according to manager Tory Lovullo. (Source: Steve Gilbert on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Lovullo did not express concern, and noted that Walker could see game action as early as Tuesday. Walker surprised many in 2019 by batting .259 with 29 homers. He's expected to open the season as the Diamondbacks' starting first baseman.

D'backs closer Archie Bradley has won his arbitration case and will make $4.1 million in 2020. (Source: Mark Feinsand on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Arizona had proposed a $3.625 million salary. Bradley appeared in 66 games last season, totaling 18 saves and a 3.52 ERA. He is set to begin the year as the D'Backs' closer.

Nick Ahmed agreed to a four-year extension on Monday. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Ahmed’s four-year extension is worth a guaranteed $32.5 million. He set career-highs in average (.255), OBP (.318), homers (19) and RBI (82) last season. Ahmed who is known as elite defender, should see plenty of at-bats as Arizona’s starting shortstop. He is currently the 37th shortstop on the consensus rankings, and is worth a late round flyer in mixed-league drafts.

Taijuan Walker started Sunday's regular season finale versus the Padres and threw a scoreless inning.

Fantasy Impact: It was the only inning Walker threw in 2019 as he was recovering from major elbow and shoulder surgeries. The 27-year-old will compete for a spot in the Arizona rotation next spring.

Adam Jones went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI in Arizona's loss to the Cardinals on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: It was his third straight game with an RBI. Jones is batting .263 with 16 homers, 66 RBI, and a .731 OPS this year as we approach late-September. He showed he still has some juice left in the tank this year but ultimately isn't a difference-maker in fantasy leagues. He'll be a free agent once again this off-season.

Category: Game Recaps

Eduardo Escobar went 1-for-5 with a single and an RBI in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Cardinals.

Fantasy Impact: The RBI was Escobar's 118th of the season, which is tied for the third most in the National League. Escobar has also totaled 30 homers, five steals, and an .839 OPS this year. He'll be going much higher in drafts next year than he was this past spring.

Alex Young fell to 7-5 on Monday versus St. Louis, giving up six runs on seven hits over five innings pitched.

Fantasy Impact: Young struck out five and walked two in the outing. Most of the damage came via a season-high three homers allowed, however. The 26-year-old lefty has mostly been solid this season and this was his first bad start in a while. He'll carry a 3.74 ERA into a final start against the Padres on Sunday.

Ketel Marte has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back and will be shut down for the rest of the season. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Marte was removed from Tuesday's game due to a stiff back, and the team announced Friday that he'll be shut down for the year. He won't require surgery and is expected to be ready to go for the start of the 2020 season. He wraps up an incredible breakout season in which he batted .329 with 32 homers and 92 RBI.
