Arizona Diamondbacks

NL West

Third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored as the Diamondbacks fell to the A's 7-5 on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Cabrera smacked an RBI double off Jesus Luzardo in the bottom of the third inning to give Arizona a 4-0 advantage. The veteran utility infielder is off to a solid start this season with a .273/.405/.545 batting line to go along with three doubles, two home runs, and nine RBI over 33 at-bats. He's going to continue to get everyday at-bats for as long as Ketel Marte (hamstring) is out and is worth a look in deep mixed leagues.

Catcher Carson Kelly went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run, a walk, and a strikeout in the Diamondbacks 7-5 loss to the A's on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Kelly put the D-Backs on the board in the bottom of the second inning when took Jesus Luzardo deep for a three-run blast. It was Kelly's only hit of the game and his first long ball of 2021. The 26-year-old backstop is quietly having a great start to the year, slashing .429/.519/.667 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBI across 21 at-bats. He's split his time fairly evenly with Stephen Vogt but he should absolutely be rostered in two-catcher and deeper mixed leagues.

RHP Kevin Ginkel was given a blown save after he coughed up one earned run with two strikeouts over 2/3 of an inning in the Diamondbacks 7-5 loss to the A's on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Ginkel was handed a tough draw on Tuesday as he entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with one out and two runners on base. Taylor Clarke created quite a mess before Ginkel came on to relieve him but the D-Backs still held a 5-2 advantage. He struck out Ramon Laureano for out number two before serving up a wall scraping, three-run home run to Jed Lowrie. He eventually got out of the inning but was given a blown save. The closer situation in Arizona is unsettled and Ginkel could be in line to get some save opportunities once Arizona enters the ninth inning with a three-run lead, which hasn't happened over the last five games.

RHP Zac Gallen allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over four innings the Diamondbacks 7-5 loss to the A's on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: This was more a tuneup start for Gallen, who was making his 20 debut after suffering a hairline fracture in his forearm in late March. He only went four innings and threw 82 pitches, scattering three hits and walking a pair of batters. His only mistake was serving up a solo home run to Stephen Piscotty in the top of the fourth inning. He gets the Reds on the road in his next start, which should be a good test for the talented right-hander.

Second baseman Josh VanMeter went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in the Diamondback 9-5 loss to the A's on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: VanMeter picked up one of two extra-base hits for the D-Backs when he smacked a triple off Yusmeiro Petit in the bottom of the sixth inning. He would come around to score later in the frame off a Nick Ahmed groundout. VanMeter is slashing .294/.400/.417 (17 at-bats) to begin the season but has only started 4-of-11 games, which keeps him off the fantasy radar.

Outfielder Kole Calhoun went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk in the D-Backs 9-5 loss to the A's on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: Calhoun picked up his first multi-hit game of the season on Monday. He singled in Madison Bumgarner in the bottom of the third inning to put the D-Backs on the board. The 33-year-old got a late start o the season after undergoing meniscus surgery in early March but he's looked good through his first three games.

RHP Stefan Crichton allowed a pair of runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk over 2/3 of an inning in the D-Backs 9-5 loss to the A's on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: Crichton entered in the top of the ninth inning with Arizona losing 7-5 and promptly gave up a pair of runs via Matt Chapman single and a Sean Murphy double. The 29-year-old righty has struggled in the early going this season, putting up a 5.79 ER and 1.93 WHIP over 4 2/3 innings (six appearances). Crichton picked up five saves for Arizona during the shortened 2020 campaign but hasn't received a save chance yet this year. After Chris Devenski was placed on the restricted list last week the thought was that Crichton would be next in line for save opportunities but there simply haven't been any over the last six games.

LHP Madison Bumgarner took the loss on Monday when he surrendered six runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a 9-5 loss to the Athletics.

Fantasy Impact: Bumgarner's rocky start to the season continued against the A's on Monday. He's now allowed six, five, and six earned runs in his three starts this year. Mad Bum has looked like a shadow of his former self this season with an ugly 11.20 ERA, 2.20 WHIP, and 15:8 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings. He's not a recommended fantasy play on the road vs. the Nationals in his next start. Even if you still own him in a season-long league, he should be benched until you see signs of improvement.

The Diamondbacks placed first baseman Christian Walker on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain. They recalled Andy Young from the alternate site in a corresponding move. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Oblique injuries for hitters are concerning. In 44 plate appearances, Christian Walker had one home run, six runs, and three RBI with a .179 batting average. Continue to stash Walker in all formats.

The Diamondbacks signed free agent OF Josh Reddick to a minor league contract. (Source: Nick Piecoro on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: The 34-year-old has seen his production wane in recent years, so he'll serve as outfield depth in Arizona. Reddick is far removed from the fantasy radar these days.

Third baseman Eduardo Escobar went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, and two runs scored in the Diamondbacks 7-0 win over the Reds on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: Escobar has now homered in four straight games and is one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now. He also picked up a double in this game as well. After a 1-for-21 start to begin the season, Escobar has gone 7-for-16 with four home runs and eight RBI since.

Outfielder David Peralta had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run, two runs, and a walk as the D-Backs blanked the Reds 7-0 on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: Peralta smacked his first homer of the season, a three-run shot off Cincinnati starter Jose De Leon in the bottom of the third inning. He also picked up a double and a walk in the game as well. The perennially underrated 33-year-old has gotten off to a slow start this season with a .189/.250/.405 batting line but perhaps this monster game will get him going.

RHP Luke Weaver nabbed his first win of the season on Sunday when he allowed just one hit and one walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings pitched in a 7-0 Diamondbacks win over the Reds.

Fantasy Impact: This was one of the best starts of Weaver's career as he was throwing a perfect game through six innings. He fired 63 of his 94 pitches for strikes while holding the red hot Cincinnati offense to just one hit. He's rocking an impressive 2.13 ERA, 0.47 WHIP, and 11:0 K/BB ratio through two starts to begin the season. He gets the Nationals on the road in his next turn.

Outfielder Tim Locastro went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the D-Backs 8-3 win over the Reds on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: Locastro was also picked off in the game but he did successfully swipe his second bag of the year. He picked up for singles, two of which were infield hits, out of the leadoff spot and provided a spark for the typically dormant Arizona offense. He's working on a three-game hitting streak and could provide some fantasy value if he remains at the top of the D-Backs order. He's slashing .276/.323/.379 to begin the year but has a career OBP of .363 (154 games). He's worth keeping eyes on, especially if you're in need of steals.

RHP Riley Smith picked up his first win of the season on Saturday when he allowed just two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk over six innings as the Diamondbacks took down the Reds 8-3.

Fantasy Impact: Smith was able to hold down the explosive Cincinnati offense over his six innings of work on Saturday. He did surrender eight hits but only allowed a couple of runs courtesy of a pair of RBI singles from Nick Senzel and Jonathan India in the second inning. The D-Backs offense was able to put some runs on the board so Smith picked up his first win of the season. He'll carry his 3.27 ERA and 1.55 WHIP into his next start in D.C. against the Nationals.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have activated shortstop Nick Ahmed from the 10-day injured list. (Source: Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Ahmed spent the minimum amount of time on the injured list before being activated. Geraldo Perdomo was optioned down to the Diamondbacks alternate site in the process.

RHP Taylor Widener was handed a no-decision on Friday as he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts over five innings in the D-backs 6-5 loss to the Reds.

Fantasy Impact: Widener did enough to keep the Diamondbacks in the game through his five innings of work. He scattered his seven hits over five innings, allowing an RBI single to Jesse Winker in the third inning and a solo home run to Tyler Naquin in the fourth. Overall, he's looked solid through two starts this year, carrying a 2.45 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 11 innings pitched. The rotation spot is his to lose after Caleb Smith was moved to the bullpen. He'll get the Nationals on the road in his next start.

Outfielder Pavin Smith went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored as the D-Backs lost to the Rockies 7-3 on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact: Rockies' starter Jon Gray was throwing a no-hitter through six innings so hits were at a premium for the D-Backs on Thursday. They only ended up with five hits as a team and Smith picked up two of them with an RBI single in the seventh inning and a double in the ninth. Smith is now slashing .235/.235/.353 over 17 at-bats to begin the season but could be the odd man out in the Arizona outfield once Kole Calhoun returns from the IL.

Category: Game Recaps

RHP Merrill Kelly took a loss on Thursday when he allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with one strikeout over six innings in the D-Backs 7-3 loss to the Rockies.

Fantasy Impact: The Rockies were all over Kelly from the outset as they put up three runs in the first inning, another run in the second, and three more runs, courtesy of a Dom Nunez HR in the sixth. Kelly has had two difficult starts to begin the season at San Diego and at Coors Field but he should have a better shot at a win when he faces the A's at home in his next turn. Of course, Arizona would need to start scoring some runs for the 32-year-old to even be in line for a victory.

Ketel Marte was placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday, according to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks indicated Marte is dealing with a right hamstring strain. (Source: Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Marte injured his hamstring while trying to leg out an infield single in Wednesday night's game against the Rockies. This will come as disappointing news to fantasy managers, as Marte has started the year hot, slashing .462/.500/.846 with 2 home runs. Tim Locastro could see increased opportunities in CF in Marte's absence.
