Chicago Bulls

Eastern Central

According to Chicago Bulls beat writer K.C. Johnson, Otto Porter is unlikely to remain with Chicago after his contract expires. (Source: NBC Sports)

Fantasy Impact: Porter has been marred by injuries since he was traded to the Chicago Bulls, appearing in only 29 games over the past two seasons. Porter's player option for next season is a whopping $28.5M so it would be in his best financial interest to opt-in, leaving doubt that Chicago will want to bring him back on a new deal given how little he's provided thus far. On the season, Porter averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 23.6 minutes per game. Porter carries too much injury risk going into next season to be trusted in 10-12 team formats.

Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Arturas Karnisovas told reporters that “our objective is to get the best version of Lauri [Markkanen] next year. We agreed in conversations that this is our objective, and we’re going to try to do it.” (Source: Rob Schaefer on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Markkanen struggled in his third season with the Bulls, relative to his impressive sophomore campaign where he averaged 18.7 points and nine rebounds per game. In 50 games so far this season, he’s seen his averages fall to just 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He’s taking 3.5 fewer shots and shooting at a lower clip from the field as well, but Karnisovas doesn’t seem worried about the future prospects for the former 7th overall draft pick. “We’ll set expectations, which are pretty high,” Karnisovas said. “And it’s about improvement.” Chicago seems eager and willing to help Markkanen not only get back to his production during the 2018-19 season, but to also help him improve and become a really good player in this league. These comments by Bulls management bode well for a rejuvenated and hungry player as soon as next season.

In compliance with NBA safety protocol, Kris Dunn has been receiving treatment on his right knee MCL sprain, at the Advocate Center. (Source: K.C. Johnson on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Dunn initially sustained the injury when his knee collided with Thaddeus Young in a game versus the Nets on January 31st. In March, he was officially ruled out for the season. Dunn averaged 7.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and two steals per contest. The point guard could be a nice streamer in 2020, for fantasy owners looking for an edge in steals.

The Chicago Bulls announced during All-Star Weekend that they were planning to make some front office changes. Now, ESPN is reporting that they are seeking interviews with Denver Nuggets' general manager Arturas Karnisovas and Toronto Raptors' general manager Bobby Webster, among other candidates. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: After three straight seasons of less than 30 wins and multiple free agency and trade gaffs, it appears that the Chicago Bulls are moving away from the front office duo made up of John Paxson and Gar Foreman that have led basketball operations for the last 18 seasons. In the past, Chicago was a favorable spot for free agents to choose, but the Bulls' front office reputation has been a deciding factor in my players' choices to sign elsewhere over the last few seasons. The Bulls have a few solid building blocks which may entice Karnisovas or Webster to come to Chicago; Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen, Coby White, and Wendell Carter Jr, specifically. A new general manager could help right the Bulls' ship and get some better production out of the young roster.

Thaddeus Young logged eight points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists, and one steal over 21 minutes in Tuesday's 108-103 win over the Cavaliers.

Fantasy Impact: Young was able to take full advantage of his starting gig over 16 games while Lauri Markkanen was nursing a hip injury, but Markkanen's re-entrance into the starting lineup has decimated Young's value who is only averaging 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assist, 2.5 steals, and 0.8 blocks over his last four outings while seeing a minute decrease in each game. He only saw 21 minutes in Tuesday's contest and is safe to drop in all formats.

Chandler Hutchison will miss the rest of the season after undergoing season-ending surgery on his shoulder. (Source: Larry Hawley)

Fantasy Impact: Hutchison has missed the last ten games with the injury and will now be shut down for the season. The return of Lauri Markkanen and Otto Porter, along with the emergence of Coby White, make this nearly a moot point for the Bulls at this point.

Tomas Satoransky produced five points (2-7 FG, 1-3 3PT), eight rebounds, and five assist over 29 minutes of relief in Tuesday's 108-103 win over the Cavaliers.

Fantasy Impact: After starting 64 straight games this season, Satoransky's streak came to an end on Tuesday night. Bulls' coach Jim Boylen had no choice but to vault the explosive rookie Coby White into the starting lineup due to his recent play. Satoransky is averaging 28.9 minutes per game and logged 29 off the bench on Tuesday but failed to do much as a scorer. Luckily he was able to salvage his poor night shooting by tying his season-high in rebounds and dishing five assists. Even though Satoransky is no longer the starting point guard, he should continue to see valuable minutes and maintain his value as a pass-first guard in all fantasy leagues.

Denzel Valentine logged 15 points (6-12 FG, 3-6 3PT), two assists, one rebound, and one steal over 23 minutes in Tuesday's win over the Cavaliers.

Fantasy Impact: Not that anyone expected Valentine to replicate the injured Zach LaVine's production, but he hasn't come anywhere near that in his limited opportunity. Over his five starts he has averaged 13.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.2 blocks, and 1.6 three-pointers drained on 25.8% from deep. While he's been a decent value in DFS, LaVine's return should be soon and Valentine will be relegated back to his 12-15 minutes per game off the bench. However, if LaVine is shut down in the Bulls' lost season, Valentine could continue to contribute as a solid DFS value.

Wendell Carter Jr. recorded 17 efficient points (7-9 FG, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, two steals, and one assist over 27 minutes in Tuesday's 108-103 win over the Cavaliers.

Fantasy Impact: Six games into a return from an ankle injury that sidelined him for nearly two months and Carter Jr. finally cracked double digits. His rebound total was low, but banging in the paint with Andre Drummond is no easy task. Carter Jr. has been pretty quiet since the injury, averaging just 8.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.5 blocks, and 0.5 steals. He has a much easier matchup than what he has faced over the last few games on Thursday. He should return to his double-double form against the Magic.

Coby White scored 20 points (7-17 FG, 2-7 3PT, 4-5 FT), with five rebounds, five assists, and nine turnovers in 37 minutes in 108-103 win over Cleveland.

Fantasy Impact: White got the start tonight over Tomas Satoransky. He looked a little nervous out there at times, turning the ball over a whopping nine times. He still put up respectable numbers for his fantasy owners, but I’m sure they’d like to see him take better care of the ball and perhaps provide some defensive stats as well. Look for White to stick with the starters as Chicago looks to see what they have in their potential future All-Star guard.

Shaquille Harrison scored 8 points (3-7 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT), with 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal, three blocks, and no turnovers in 29 minutes in 108-103 win over the Cavaliers.

Fantasy Impact: Harrison has been doing it all of late for the Bulls and for fantasy owners. He’s been a defensive menace in his last four games as a starter, averaging 2.5 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. What’s even better is that Harrison is only averaging 0.5 turnovers per game in those four games. He’s taking care of the ball and locking down the other teams best player. As long as Zach LaVine (quad) continues to miss games, consider Harrison a must-add for this week as the Bulls have three more games on the docket.

Daniel Gafford came off the bench and scored nine points (4-5 FG, 1-1 FT), grabbed two boards, dished one assist, and blocked on shot over 25 minutes in Monday's 109-107 win over the Mavericks.

Fantasy Impact: With Wendell Carter Jr. healthy and back in the starting lineup, Gafford has spent the last two games coming off of the bench. The second-round rookie has been a nice surprise this season, averaging 7.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks over his last 10 games. Unfortunately that won't translate to many wins in fantasy, but he will assuredly go into the offseason with a sleeper tag for next year.

Luke Kornet will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks due to a foot and ankle injury. (Source: Darnell Mayberry on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Kornet is towards the back-half of the bench so his absence will not create too much of a boost for his teammates. The biggest beneficiaries would likely be Thaddeous Young - who is currently the starter with Lauri Markkanen still out with a pelvis injury - Daniel Gafford and possibly Cristiano Felicio. Felicio has only appeared in 19 games this season so we will have to see how him and Gafford will rotate. Gafford will likely be favored of the two. If Young is still out on waivers, he may get enough minutes to warrant temporary ownership in season-long leagues.

Adam Mokoka scored 15 hyper-efficient points (6-6 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 0-2 FT) in five minutes of game time in yesterday's 125-119 loss to the Pelicans.

Fantasy Impact: Mokoka has spent most of his season in the G-league but was called up to deal with the recent slew of injuries to the Bulls. He made the most of his limited opportunities, going perfect from the field and dropping 15 points in five minutes. The rookie from France is an extremely speculative add as he's only seen 22 minutes of game time all season, but he should get another opportunity to see the court Sunday night against the 76er's where he can be a Hail Mary in big DFS tournaments.

Ryan Arcidiacono scored 13 points, (5-6 FG, 3-4 3PT), 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals during his 25 minutes of floor action off the bench against the Pelicans.

Fantasy Impact: Arcidiacono scored 26 fantasy points against the Pelicans and is averaging 9 on the season in standard leagues. This was his best fantasy performance on the season. He remains owned in less then 3% of all standard fantasy leagues and should remain that way until more if provided on a weekly basis.

Cristiano Felicio scored two points (1-1 FG) with nine rebounds and one block across 24 minutes off the bench in Friday’s 98-81 loss to Sacramento.

Fantasy Impact: Felicio came off the bench and played more minutes than Luke Kornet. Felicio should play around 20 to 25 minutes per game for the Bulls with all the injuries and lack of big man options. It is safe to leave Felicio on the wire.
