DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (5/29)

DraftKings MLB Value Plays: Monday (5/29)

Happy Memorial Day! Before we get into this Monday’s value plays, I’d like to take a moment to send out a thank you to all of our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to maintain our freedoms over the years. To all of our current active military, thank you as well.

For baseball fans, Memorial Day also offers a full slate of games spread out through the day, starting with the Orioles hosting the Yankees at 1:05 pm EST. DraftKings offers an all-day slate, a nine-game early slate (starting at 2:10 pm EST) and a five-game late slate. Since most of you have the day off, I’ll write up all of today’s action so you can be prepared for all of the action.

Pitcher

Jordan Montgomery (NYY): $6,400 @ BAL
While I wouldn’t play him in cash games, Montgomery has sneaky upside against an Orioles team in the bottom half of the league versus LHP in almost all offensive metrics. With so many righty bats in that lineup, playing a lefty against the Orioles may seem scary, but they’re striking out nearly 25% of the time against opposing southpaws. As a slight home dog, I like him in GPPs to get you off to a hot start on the all-day slate.

Rich Hill (LAD): $7,900 @ STL
Blisters and control are two things Hill (-111) has struggled with in 2017. He may have a short leash yet again, somewhat of a theme for Dodgers starters, but he’s in play today against St. Louis. Coming into today, they own an awful team wOBA of .286 and .107 team ISO against lefties. Hill has limited RH bats to a similar number, and if he gets control of his fastball, he should cruise through the Cards lineup which has it’s “best hitter” (Matt Carpenter), priced below Tommy Pham today…that’s telling.

Other Notables

Catcher

Alex Avila (DET): $3,400 @ KC
Avila has been smashing right-handed pitching this season, more so than any other point of his career and he’s not slowing down. Don’t believe me? Look at these numbers: .357 AVG, 1.166 OPS, .333 ISO, .484 wOBA, 215 wRC+.

Maybe being put in a reserve/platoon role has refreshed him, but whatever it is, he has elite splits against RHP in 2017. If he’s near the top of the order, just play him.

Other Notables

First Base

Lucas Duda (NYM): $3,800 vs. MIL
Duda is on a nice hot stretch over the last week, averaging a little over 16 DK points per game with four multi-hit efforts and three long balls. He’s seeing the ball very well this season and getting on base more frequently (career highs in OBP%, wOBA, and OPS). Factor in his .269 ISO/144 wRC+ versus opposing RHPs this season and he makes for an outstanding play against Matt Garza, who is bound for some regression.

Other Notables

Second Base

Devon Travis (TOR): $3,600 vs. CIN
After a brutal start this season, Travis has been raking in May. He’s always hit righties and lefties equally, but this season he’s cut down on the whiffs and increased hard contact versus RHP. If you believe in hot streaks, this is the play today with him drawing Lisalverto Bonilla at home. He’s the hottest hitter at the keystone but has been going under-owned recently, making him worthy of consideration in all formats.

Other Notables

Third Base

Kyle Seager (SEA): $4,000 @ COL
When there is a Coors Field game, it’s rare to see a player mentioned in this article. While I always try to keep the value plays under $4,000, Seager is a solid option in the best of hitting environments as he’s collected hits in seven of his last eight games. He’s not performing as well against RHPs this season, but he is hitting the ball harder, walking slightly more and striking out slightly less which are all encouraging in the thin mile-high air.

Other Notables

Shortstop

Zack Cozart (CIN): $3,900 @ TOR
Cozart is quietly having his best season as a pro and getting on base at career best rates as well, especially against RHP, where he’s more than doubled his career walk rate so far this season. He still hits lefties better, but the .226 ISO, .414 wOBA & 154 wRC+ against righties this year is still impressive. I prefer to punt at SS, but there doesn’t appear to be many punt options today, making Cozart a fantastic value, especially if he hits second in the order like he has been.

Other Notables

Outfield

Jayson Werth (WAS): $3,700 @ SF
Werth is a career lefty killer with .245 ISO/.400 wOBA/149 wRC+ splits that don’t differ much from his 2017 splits of .222/.465/188. The impressive part of his recent performance is like Zach Cozart; he too is walking at nearly double the pace of his career numbers. AT&T Park doesn’t play well to LH power, but I still like Werth to tee off against Matt Moore today as a bit of a forgotten piece of this potent Nationals lineup.

Cody Bellinger (LAD): $3,900 @ STL (also 1B eligible)
The early favorite for NL Rookie of the Year is mashing opposing RHP since getting the call to the big leagues. I know I’ve mentioned his swing before, which isn’t very analytical, but my goodness is it fun to watch!

Here’s some numbers for you: .309 ISO, .375 wOBA & 135 wRC+ versus opposing righties. There are a lot of great options at 1B tonight, so getting exposure to him is probably best in the OF for cash games, but GPP game theory may be best putting him in at 1B.

Guillermo Heredia (SEA): $2,800/Ben Gamel (SEA): $3,500 @ COL
One of these guys will be in the lineup, and the other will likely sit. Given the M’s recent lineups versus RHP, it’s safe to assume that whoever is playing will also bat second in the order, not a bad spot at Coors. There isn’t a lot of analysis behind this one; it’s a good cheap way to get some Coors Field exposure. Gamel is obviously $700 more than Heredia, but I like either one considering they’ll likely to get four, possibly five PAs today in Denver.
