Fantasy Football QB1 Primer: Week 4 (2021)

Fantasy Football QB1 Primer: Week 4 (2021)

Fantasy football isn’t about winning.

I know, that’s a jarring opening statement to an article in which the sole purpose is to help you win this week’s game. But the past week has reminded me of what fantasy football is really about: bringing people together.

Think of all the people you’re in fantasy football leagues with: longtime friends, family, coworkers. I’m even in some leagues with fellow analysts who I’ve never met in person. Would those relationships be as strong if you didn’t have this silly game tying you together?

As we continue to mourn the passing of our beloved colleague, Mike Tagliere, remember that the goal of fantasy football is to win, but the reason we play fantasy football is to stay connected to each other.

It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of life. It’s easy to lose contact with people because things get busy. But thankfully, we have this game to keep us together. Don’t take relationships for granted. Reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while this week.  You’ll be really glad you did.

Now, let’s talk quarterbacks for Week 4:

Week 3 Recap

Mid-Range Passers with QB1 Upside

Justin Herbert: QB2 in Week 3
Cha-ching! Herbert was excellent in Week 3, throwing for 281 yards and four touchdowns in an upset win over Kansas City. Something tells me he’s just scratching the surface.

Aaron RodgersQB17 in Week 3
Rodgers definitely wasn’t bad, and the game-winning drive he led to beat San Francisco was incredible. However, just 261 yards and two touchdowns might not have gotten the job done for you.

Daniel JonesQB20 in Week 3
I deserve this. Recommending Daniel Jones made me squeamish. He isn’t good, and he proved it once more by throwing for just 266 yards against an Atlanta defense that couldn’t stop a nosebleed. Never again.

Streaming Options

Justin FieldsQB34 in Week 3
I didn’t like the streaming options last week, and they didn’t like me either. Fields was a disaster in his first career start. Much of that had to do with horrible game planning. But Fields looked lost at times.

Carson WentzQB31 in Week 3
Carson Wentz just stinks at football. I’m done with him. Sure, he’s playing with two ankle injuries. But to throw for just 194 yards against Tennessee’s miserable secondary is sad. He should retire.

Week 4 Mid-Range Passers with QB1 Upside

Dak Prescott vs. Carolina
I’m a little confused by Prescott’s rank here. Our Expert Consensus Rankings have him 10th this week. On the surface, I understand why Prescott’s a little lower, as Carolina’s defense has been great to start the year. But I have two counterpoints: Carolina’s secondary is without two starters this week, and Carolina’s defense has faced Zach Wilson (in his NFL debut), Jameis Winston, and Davis Mills (in his first career start). I expect Prescott and this Cowboys offense to have plenty of success.

Russell Wilson at San Francisco
Wilson has been really efficient the last two weeks, but he hasn’t been overly explosive. Seattle’s offense has also started hot before hitting the skids in the second half of their losses. I think we’ll get Wilson’s very best against a 49ers defense that feels a little overrated. Specifically, San Francisco’s secondary is a weak spot, just look at what Davante Adams did to them last Sunday night. I expect D.K. Metcalf to have a monstrous game as Seattle gets back on track.

Taylor Heinicke at Atlanta
Don’t let Daniel Jones fool you, this Falcons defense is still pretty bad. And while I’m not a huge fan of Heinicke, he isn’t afraid to sling it. And I expect Washington to air it out plenty against a Falcons secondary that’s given up eight touchdown passes to quarterbacks not named Daniel Jones. In what might be a must-win game for Washington, Heinicke could put up big numbers.

Ben Roethlisberger at Green Bay
Okay, hear me out. I know Big Ben might be completely washed up. I know he hasn’t thrown for more than a single touchdown in any of his first three games. But following an embarrassing loss at home to Cincinnati in which he was the primary scapegoat, I’m expecting Roethlisberger’s best against Green Bay (whatever that might be). Plus, Pittsburgh faces a relatively favorable matchup against a Packers defense that hasn’t been quite as stout without star pass rusher Za’Darius Smith. Green Bay has also given up a league-high nine touchdown passes this season. If you’re desperate, he’s worth a shot.

Mac Jones vs. New England
Backing any of these rookie quarterbacks is the definition of playing with matches. But the only way New England can win this game is if they attack Tampa Bay’s vulnerable secondary. Tampa’s given up the second-most passing yards and the most passing touchdowns in the league this year. Plus, the game script may force New England to throw as Tom Brady seeks revenge in Foxboro.

Zach Wilson vs. Tennessee
I know, I know, I know. Another rookie that makes you want to vomit. I get it. But the Jets have heard all week how inept they are offensively. However, let’s keep in mind that Wilson has faced a Panthers defense that’s turned out to be pretty good, a Bill Belichick-coached Patriots defense, and a ferocious Broncos defense in his first three starts. Talk about a tough welcome to the NFL. The Titans offer a much softer matchup with a really lousy secondary. I’m not suggesting Wilson will put up a similar performance to what Kyler Murray did to Tennessee in Week 1. But the opportunity is there for him to get right and get a couple of scores at home.
