2023 Fantasy Baseball: Players to Buy Low and Sell High

What one MLB player are you trying to buy low and why? Also, who are you willing to give up for him?

Marcus Semien (2B – TEX)

“Marcus Semien can be a streaky player, and over the last 30 days, he has just 2 HR and 9 RBI with a .236 BA and a .633 OPS. If you could flip a streaking Justin Turner (whose numbers on the year are comparable to Semien) and add a throw-in, I would put my money on Marcus over the next 81 games having the better stats. Especially given Turner’s lack of durability and age, not to mention Semien has nine steals too. ”

Rafael Devers (3B – BOS)

“In leagues where I’m in contention, I would start to put out feelers on Rafael Devers heading into the All-Star Break. In 83 games, he has 20 HR and 66 RBI, and he is slashing .252/.321/.495. As far as 3B goes, he ranks fourth overall in a standard 5×5 league. He is also the answer to the question, “Which third baseman leads MLB in homers?” The problem is the perception that he is having an “off year” because his ratios are lower than in previous seasons. His expected ratios are all better, though, so I’d see if I could capitalize on the perception and offer an overperforming OF like TJ Friedl.”

Cristian Javier (SP – HOU)

“Cristian Javier: Javier is a prototypical buy-low player. He’s a really good pitcher who going through a bit of a rough patch — and that means you can probably get him for less of a package than you would normally be able to. The 26-year-old has allowed 18 earned runs over his last 10.2 innings pitched (that’s really bad) after going through April and May with ERAs of 3.14 and 2.40, respectively. It’s a little worrisome that his K/9 rate is down by over three strikeouts per nine innings compared to his last two seasons, but again, we’re buying low (theoretically), so you shouldn’t be giving up too much if you play your cards right. If you dangle someone like Josh Jung or Nick Castellanos, you should be able to get Javier back. ”

What one MLB player are you trying to sell high right now and why? Also, who would you try to get in return?

Domingo German (SP – NYY)

“Domingo German’s historic perfect game was on the bench for almost 60% of fantasy managers. As frustrated as many may have been for missing that moment, redemption can be had by trading him NOW. With the looming returns of Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes, German could get squeezed out of the rotation if the Yankees make a move before the deadline for more reliable starting pitching help. If you could get a bat like Jd Martinez for German, I’d take that an run. even with the perfecto, German had a June ERA of 5.67!”
Joe Pisapia (FantasyPros)

Dane Dunning (SP – TEX)

“If your pitching plan includes holding onto Dane Dunning, might I suggest you reconsider? He has been a pleasant surprise, and there is definitely a pull toward his win equity pitching for the Rangers. However, here are some red flags: His BABIP is .263, which is significantly below his career average of .303. His K% is 15.90, and HR/9 is 0.52, but batters are actually making harder contact against him, so that should regress. The most basic number for fantasy purposes is this: His ERA is 2.61, whereas his xERA is 4.61. Find someone in your league who is pitching-starved and pick off someone who helps you, like Brandon Nimmo or Max Muncy.”
Kelly Kirby (FantasyPros)

Eloy Jimenez (OF – CWS)

“Eloy Jimenez: I really like Jimenez, but he’s extremely streaky and is in the midst of a hot streak (read: SELL). After dealing with some injuries earlier in the season, Jimenez is currently hitting .274 with 26 runs, 11 home runs, and 38 RBI on the year. The 26-year-old mashed five of his 11 home runs in June and is currently 6-for-11 with a home run in July. He’s currently riding a seven-game hitting streak and is worth dangling to see if you can get someone to give up a good return while things are going well. If you can flip Jimenez for a solid starter like Sonny Gray or Aaron Nola, that’s a trade I’d do right now. ”
