Top 9 Injuries to Know for Week 9 Waiver Wire (2023 Fantasy Football)

This week was a rough week for QBs around the league, as a bunch of them got injured on Sunday. If you have pass catchers on teams like the Vikings and Rams, expect a decrease in production. RBs seem to have survived the week without any significant injuries barring any surprising missed practices later in the week.

As always, this article is an estimate and educated guessing on injuries and timelines based on limited information. Monitor practice reports for the most solid information throughout the week.

Let’s start with the QBs.

Injuries To Know for Week 9 Waiver Wire

Matthew Stafford (QB – LAR)

Stafford suffered a UCL sprain in his thumb. The UCL shares the same name as the elbow ligament that is famous for being the reason for Tommy John surgery, but the thumb ligament is far less severe. If the injury is severe enough for surgery, Stafford would likely miss between 3-7 weeks from the date of surgery. If it’s a grade 1 sprain, expect Stafford to play next week or miss one game. If grade 2, injured reserve (IR) becomes a real possibility even if managed non-surgically. Expect Kupp and Nacua to perform worse in the event Stafford misses time.

Waiver considerations: Brett Rypien in two QB leagues.

Kirk Cousins (QB – MIN)

Unfortunately, Cousins suffered an Achilles tear, and his season is over. Monitor if the Vikings opt to trade for a QB to keep their season alive before Tuesday’s deadline or if they choose to ride it out with Jaren Hall/Nick Mullens. If they don’t end up trading for another QB, expect a downgrade to their pass catchers, and consider the possibility that Jefferson is eased even slower into action coming off a hamstring strain.

Waiver considerations: Jameis Winston, if you believe the rumors that the Vikings are interested in a trade.

Tyrod Taylor (QB – NYG)

Taylor suffered a rib cage injury in Sunday’s game against the Jets. Either way, Daniel Jones is going to be the Giants’ starting QB going forward and becomes an interesting waiver add for a QB-needy team. Jones will be trying to play the Giants out of drafting a top QB, so his job for the future may be on the line.

Waiver considerations: Daniel Jones is my favorite waiver QB this week.

Kenny Pickett (QB – PIT)

Pickett suffered a rib injury on Sunday. Initial reports state that he does not have any structural damage, which means that he will likely play in their game on Thursday, but he will probably be playing through pain. If he were to miss time, Trubisky would become a decent streamer in a two-QB league, but there’s a good chance Pickett plays after a limited practice on Monday.

Waiver considerations: Mitch Trubisky

Drake London (WR – ATL)

Suffered a groin injury at the end of the game on Sunday. If he just tweaked it, there’s a possibility he plays next week, and that seems to be the most likely scenario based on what Arthur Smith said on Monday. If it turns out to be a true minor strain, expect London to miss one to two weeks and an increased reinjury risk for the first two weeks upon return. Either way, the Falcons’ next receiving option is Mack Hollins, who won’t project much better even without London. He’s probably best left on waivers for now.

Waiver considerations: Mack Hollins in the deepest leagues

Kendrick Bourne (WR – NE)

Bourne suffered an ACL tear. His season will be over. DeVante Parker also suffered a concussion and will likely miss next week. Demario Douglas is a very intriguing waiver add this week. If he does well with increased opportunity next week, he will be a big-time waiver add. If you have an extra spot, he’s probably my favorite WR to add this week.

Waiver considerations: Demario Douglas is my favorite WR to add this week.

Darren Waller (TE – NYG)

Waller suffered a hamstring strain in Sunday’s game. Waller clarified that the injury was not in the same leg as the previous hamstring injury earlier this season. This is a good sign for his outlook, although, at his age, an IR stint wouldn’t surprise me. As mentioned earlier, Daniel Jones returning is an upgrade to all the Giants’ pass catchers, and this makes Wan’Dale Robinson an interesting waiver addition this week. Robinson is coming off an ACL tear last season, so I expect him to continue to feel more comfortable as the season progresses.

Waiver considerations: Wan’dale Robinson

Derrick Henry (RB – TEN)

Both Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears were limited in practice on Monday due to ankle injuries. Neither of these injuries seems concerning, and it seems like it’s just going to be limiting their practice reps, and they’ll likely play on Thursday. Either way, Spears should be rostered.

Waiver considerations: Tyjae Spears

Puka Nacua (WR – LAR)

McVay reported that Nacua had knee swelling on Monday following their matchup against the Cowboys. This is likely nothing serious, and I expect him to play next week with no issues.

Waiver considerations: None
