Closer News & Notes

Robert Suarez maintains his MLB lead in saves with 21.

The big news coming this week among closers is the injury to Justin Martinez. He was removed from his appearance earlier this week against the Mariners. After undergoing further testing, it was revealed he will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. He will be out for the rest of this season and will likely be sidelined for the majority of next season.

A.J. Puk was also shut down from his throwing program in his attempt to return to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen. Shelby Miller appears to be locked into the closer role for now for Arizona.

Luke Weaver threw his latest bullpen session this week on Wednesday. Devin Williams remains locked into the closer role for now in the Yankees’ bullpen.

While Kenley Jansen remains the clear closer in the Angels’ bullpen, Reid Detmers has been on fire. He has not allowed a run in his past 10 appearances dating back to May 20th. He holds some fantasy appeal in deeper leagues despite not being in the closer role. Detmers has recorded multiple strikeouts in five straight and seven out of his past eight appearances.

David Bednar appears to be locked back into the closer role in the Pirates’ bullpen for now. His opportunities may be slim, but he is still worth rostering.
