Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamers & Waiver Wire Targets
All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in fewer than 50% of ESPN leagues.
Michael Penix Jr. (QB – ATL) vs. Minnesota Vikings | 19.9% Rostered
Unfortunately, the Falcons’ top two wide receivers are dealing with shoulder injuries. However, Drake London and Darnell Mooney could play in Week 2. Michael Penix Jr. was outstanding in Week 1, despite Mooney missing the game and London leaving the fourth quarter. The former Washington star completed 64.3% of his 42 pass attempts for 298 yards and a touchdown. He also made an impact on the ground, totaling six attempts for 21 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. Furthermore, Penix has two rushing touchdowns in his past two regular-season outings.
Minnesota made several additions on defense in the offseason, including Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave. While the Vikings played well in the second half of Monday night’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams still finished Week 1 as the QB9, scoring 24.2 fantasy points. He completed 60% of his 35 pass attempts for 210 yards and one touchdown. More importantly, Minnesota struggled to keep Williams in the pocket, as he had six rushing attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown, coming inches away from his second rushing score.
Geno Smith (QB – LV) vs. Los Angeles Chargers | 9.1% Rostered
No one expected Geno Smith to struggle in Week 1 against a revamped New England Patriots defense. The veteran had an impressive fantasy performance, especially as a QB2 option in Superflex leagues. He completed 70.6% of his 34 pass attempts for 362 yards, a touchdown and 17.5 fantasy points despite Brock Bowers leaving the game with a knee injury. More importantly, Smith had no trouble hitting multiple receivers, as seven Raiders caught a pass in Week 1. Fantasy players shouldn’t worry if Bowers misses time with the knee injury.
While the Chargers were victorious in Week 1, their defense struggled against a watered-down Kansas City Chiefs offense. They were without Rashee Rice because of a suspension. More importantly, Xavier Worthy left early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. Yet, Patrick Mahomes had 258 passing yards and a touchdown, scoring 26 fantasy points against Los Angeles with a battered wide receiver corps and little impact from Travis Kelce. Smith is an excellent streaming option this week in what should be a closer-than-expected AFC West matchup on Monday night.
Aaron Rodgers (QB – PIT) vs. Seattle Seahawks | 8.8% Rostered
In hindsight, the fantasy community should have had more confidence in Aaron Rodgers last week. We should have known he would hold a grudge against the New York Jets and want to stick it to them. The future Hall of Famer did exactly that, leading the Steelers to a two-point victory in Week 1. More importantly, Rodgers had an excellent fantasy performance and showed he has gas left in the tank. The veteran completed 73.7% of his 30 pass attempts for 244 yards and four touchdowns, scoring 25.7 fantasy points.
The 25.7 fantasy points were the most Rodgers scored in a game since Week 14 of the 2021 season. Meanwhile, the Seahawks surrendered 277 passing yards, two touchdowns and 16.8 fantasy points to Brock Purdy despite forcing the quarterback to turn the ball over four times. Furthermore, he finished the week as a top-16 quarterback despite his team losing George Kittle and Jauan Jennings to injury. While fantasy players shouldn’t expect another four-touchdown performance in Week 2, Rodgers is a capable streaming option, especially in a good matchup.
