Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamers & Waiver Wire Pickups
All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN leagues.
J.J. McCarthy (MIN) vs. Chicago Bears (49.6% Rostered)
While he hasn’t played very well for the Vikings this season, McCarthy has been an undervalued starting option for fantasy players. The former Michigan star has averaged 173 passing yards, 1.3 touchdowns, and 14.7 fantasy points per game, totaling 18.9 or more twice. Furthermore, the second-year pro has made plays with his legs, averaging 5.3 rushing attempts for 27.5 yards, 0.5 touchdowns, and 5.8 fantasy points per game on the ground. More importantly, McCarthy has an excellent matchup this week against a defense he already dominated earlier this season.
Despite making his first NFL start in Week 1, the former Michigan star was outstanding against the Bears. McCarthy completed 65% of pass attempts for 143 yards, two touchdowns, two rushing attempts for 25 yards, a score, and 22.2 fantasy points against the divisional rivals. More importantly, Chicago has had no answer for opposing passing attacks lately. They’ve surrendered 288.5 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 24.6 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks not named Spencer Rattler since their Week 5 bye, allowing at least 21.6 in all but one contest.
Jacoby Brissett (ARI) vs. San Francisco 49ers (17.4% Rostered)
Many believe Kyler Murray has played his last game as a Cardinal, meaning Brissett could be the starter for the rest of the season. While he has never been a fantasy star, the veteran has been outstanding in his four starts, averaging 279.5 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 21.2 fantasy points per game, totaling at least two scores and 19.4 fantasy points in every contest. Furthermore, Brissett has been productive when Arizona was in negative game script for most of the contest and playing with a lead in others.
Unfortunately, the 49ers’ defense has been obliterated by injuries, losing multiple stars to season-ending injuries. Therefore, it’s no surprise that their defense has been a fantasy goldmine for opposing quarterbacks lately. San Francisco has surrendered 279.2 passing yards, 2.3 touchdowns, and 22.2 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks over the past six weeks, allowing at least two scores and 19.6 fantasy points in all but one contest. Last week, Matthew Stafford completed 66.7% of his pass attempts for 280 yards, four touchdowns, and 26.9 fantasy points against the division rivals.
Marcus Mariota (WAS) vs. Miami Dolphins (11.5% Rostered)
Washington will re-evaluate Jayden Daniels’ elbow injury after their Week 13 bye. However, fantasy players shouldn’t bet on the superstar quarterback seeing the field again this year with the Commanders having little to play for. Therefore, Mariota will start again on Sunday in Spain against the Dolphins and likely for the rest of the season. The veteran has played well as the starter, averaging 197.3 passing yards, 1.5 touchdowns, and 16.6 fantasy points per game, totaling 16.2 or more in all but the matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Last week, Miami got the upset win over the Buffalo Bills. Yet, Josh Allen was solid, completing 70% of his pass attempts for 306 yards, two touchdowns, and 19.3 fantasy points. More importantly, the Dolphins have struggled against passers who use their legs, surrendering 245 passing yards, 2.1 touchdowns, 30 rushing yards, 0.6 scores, and 24.2 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks not named Bryce Young, Dillon Gabriel, and Michael Penix Jr., allowing at least 18.8 in every contest. Mariota has top-seven upside in what should be a high-scoring matchup.
Geno Smith (LV) vs. Dallas Cowboys (6.2% Rostered)
Smith has been awful for most of the season, averaging only 11.6 fantasy points per game. The veteran has scored single-digit fantasy points in 66.7% of the games, including five of the past six contests. However, he has played well with Brock Bowers on the field before last week’s matchup against an elite Denver Broncos defense, averaging 246.4 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 16.6 fantasy points per game in the other five contests, totaling 26 or more twice. More importantly, Smith has an excellent matchup against Dallas on Monday night.
The Cowboys added Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson before last week’s trade deadline. However, they will have more of an impact on Dallas’ struggling run defense than their awful pass defense. Therefore, expect the Cowboys to remain a must-start against defense for opposing quarterbacks. They’ve averaged 271.8 passing yards, 2.4 touchdowns, and 25 fantasy points per game against Dallas this season, scoring at least 21.7 in all but one contest. Furthermore, the Cowboys have surrendered three or more touchdowns to quarterbacks in 75% of the games since Week 1.
