Fantasy Football Rankings & Tiers: RB Values, Busts & Sleepers

The running back landscape for 2026 fantasy football drafts is already creating heated debates, and the latest FantasyPros RB tiers discussion offered plenty of strong takes on where value exists, and where fantasy managers may be overpaying.

Fantasy Football Rankings & Tiers: RB Values, Busts & Sleepers

From the continued rise of James Cook III to optimism surrounding Chase Brown and Omarion Hampton, the crew broke down which backs belong in the elite tiers and which players carry more risk than their ADP suggests.

James Cook III Still Deserves More Respect

Despite back-to-back productive seasons, James Cook III continues to be viewed skeptically in fantasy circles.

The FantasyPros analysts argued that Cook keeps answering every concern fantasy managers throw at him. After many predicted touchdown regression entering last season, Cook still delivered elite production while expanding his rushing workload.

One major point emphasized was Buffalo’s offensive environment. With Josh Allen still leading one of the NFL’s highest-scoring offenses and the offensive line remaining strong, Cook’s floor remains extremely high. The hosts also discussed the possibility that Buffalo could finally unlock more of Cook’s receiving upside under new leadership, especially given his pass-catching pedigree coming out of Georgia.

The panel consistently ranked Cook as a top-three fantasy running back entering 2026 drafts.

Jonathan Taylor Comes With More Questions Than Expected

While Jonathan Taylor still sits near the top of fantasy RB rankings, the conversation highlighted growing concerns surrounding his current draft cost.

The hosts pointed to Taylor’s heavy workload and dependence on quarterback play as reasons for caution. They noted how dramatically his fantasy production shifted depending on the health and effectiveness of the Colts’ offense.

Another concern was Indianapolis’ overall offensive stability. Questions about Daniel Jones‘ health, the passing game, and Taylor’s long-term durability all contributed to skepticism about drafting him as a top-three running back.

Rather than viewing Taylor as a locked-in elite RB1, the analysts suggested he fits more comfortably in the back-end RB1 range entering the season.

Is Christian McCaffrey Still a Tier 1 Running Back?

The FantasyPros crew largely agreed that Christian McCaffrey no longer belongs in the absolute top fantasy tier.

The discussion centered around workload concerns, declining rushing efficiency, age, and injury history. While McCaffrey still offers elite receiving ability, the hosts compared his current stage of career to later-career Alvin Kamara, still productive in the passing game, but less explosive as a pure runner.

Instead of viewing McCaffrey as a clear overall RB1 candidate, the analysts leaned toward younger backs like Cook, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Bijan Robinson as safer foundational options.

Omarion Hampton Emerging as a Potential League Winner

One of the biggest breakout candidates discussed was Omarion Hampton.

The hosts praised Hampton’s rookie-year flashes despite difficult circumstances that included offensive line injuries and inconsistent quarterback health. They highlighted his three-down skill set, pass-catching ability, and efficiency metrics as signs of a major second-year breakout.

The addition of Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator was viewed as another major boost, particularly because of McDaniel’s history of heavily involving running backs in the passing game.

Hampton’s target upside and expanded workload projection led the analysts to view him as a player worth drafting aggressively near the end of Round 1.

Saquon Barkley Regression Concerns Continue

The panel remained cautious on Saquon Barkley despite his elite reputation.

A major point raised was the historical difficulty of repeating massive workload seasons. The hosts emphasized that Barkley benefited from outstanding offensive line play and extremely favorable rushing conditions during his huge 2024 campaign.

They also noted declines in some of Barkley’s efficiency metrics over the last two seasons and questioned whether Philadelphia’s offensive line could remain dominant enough to support another elite finish.

Instead of viewing Barkley as a locked-in top-six RB, the analysts suggested he belongs more in the low-end RB1 or high-end RB2 range.

Chase Brown Has Top-Five Fantasy Upside

The discussion around Chase Brown was overwhelmingly positive.

The FantasyPros crew argued that Brown’s second-half breakout last season showcased his true ceiling once Cincinnati’s offense stabilized around Joe Burrow. They highlighted Brown’s usage as a true three-down workhorse and pointed out how heavily Zac Taylor leaned on him late in the year.

Even with Samaje Perine still involved, the hosts believed Brown’s workload and offensive environment create legitimate top-five fantasy upside.

Brown was repeatedly mentioned as an ideal target for managers who prioritize wide receivers early and want to build their RB room around upside backs in the middle rounds.

Javonte Williams Remains Undervalued

Another player receiving strong support was Javonte Williams.

The analysts pointed out that Williams quietly finished as a fantasy RB1 in points per game last season despite ongoing skepticism about his talent and role. They argued that touchdown variance masked how effective he actually was during large stretches of the year.

With Dallas expected to improve overall and Williams remaining the clear lead back, the crew felt his current RB2 pricing still undervalues his upside.

Rico Dowdle Could Be One of 2026’s Best Values

Rico Dowdle generated significant enthusiasm as a late-round value target.

The hosts emphasized Dowdle’s familiarity with Mike McCarthy, his strong efficiency over the last two seasons, and the likelihood that Aaron Rodgers will continue heavily targeting running backs underneath.

Despite concerns about Jaylen Warren‘s role, the panel consistently leaned toward Dowdle as the preferred Steelers running back because of his proven production and coaching staff familiarity.

TreVeyon Henderson Creates Divided Opinions

The conversation around TreVeyon Henderson was far more skeptical.

Derek Brown strongly questioned Henderson’s ranking, arguing that Rhamondre Stevenson outperformed him in multiple key efficiency categories last season and still profiles as the safer option in New England’s backfield.

The analysts agreed Henderson possesses explosive talent, but concerns remain about his pass protection, overall role, and ability to fully overtake Stevenson without an injury opening the door.

Tony Pollard Still Looks Underrated

The hosts also pushed back on the low ranking for Tony Pollard.

With Tennessee expected to improve offensively and Pollard still firmly entrenched as the lead back, the crew questioned why fantasy managers continue treating him like a fringe RB3.

The analysts pointed to improved quarterback play and better offensive efficiency as reasons Pollard could easily outperform his current ADP.

Jonathon Brooks Remains a High-Risk Lottery Ticket

The episode closed with a fascinating debate surrounding Jonathon Brooks.

Despite multiple ACL injuries, the hosts still believe Brooks carries intriguing upside because of his age, talent profile, and the Panthers’ uncertain backfield situation. They noted that Carolina previously appeared willing to phase Chuba Hubbard out in favor of Brooks before the injuries complicated his development.

While opinions varied on whether Brooks is worth aggressively targeting, the discussion reinforced that Hubbard’s grip on the RB1 role may not be as secure as fantasy managers assume.
