Whitlock was shut down in September after another strong campaign. He spent part of the year in the rotation but looked better in relief. When pitching out of the bullpen, Whitlock amassed a 2.82 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and .176 OBA. He has also posted 10.10 K/9, 1.41 BB/9, and four holds while going 6-for-8 in save situations. The Red Sox signed Kenley Jansen to handle saves in 2023, so Whitlock will likely pitch the eighth inning if he's not utilized in the rotation.
