Detroit Red Wings

central

Tyler Bertuzzi will miss the rest of the season due to an upper-body injury. His last appearance was on Jan. 30 and he will likely need surgery.

Fantasy Impact: He was only able to play in nine games this season but posted five goals and two assists. Look for Bertuzzi to return in a top-six forward role once again next season for the Red Wings.

Thomas Greiss stopped 43-of-46 shots during a 7-3 win versus Dallas.

Fantasy Impact: Greiss has struggled for most of the year with Detroit but has played better recently. Overall he has a 6-15-7 record, but three of his wins have come in his last five games with 10 goals allowed in that span, three of those appearances were starts.

Jakub Vrana scored four goals in a 7-3 win versus Dallas. He also fired six shots on goal and finished the game with a plus-four rating in 15:07 minutes of ice time.

Fantasy Impact: He now has five goals and one assist in four games with the Red Wings since his trade from Washington. This season in 43 games he has 16 goals and 15 assists.

Jonathan Bernier stopped 38-of-39 shots during a 2-1 win versus Florida.

Fantasy Impact: Bernier has played well even with a struggling Red Wings team posting a 4-2 record in eight games played. He has a very respectable .910 SV% and a 2.74 GAA.

Dylan Larkin got a second-period assist which provided the difference in a Red Wings 2-1 win versus Florida. He also had four shots, one block, and one hit while finishing with a plus-one rating in the win.

Fantasy Impact: After being held without a point during a four-game stretch in early February, Larkin has rebounded with an assist in each of his last two games. This season he has four goals and seven assists with a minus-seven rating in 20 games played.

Sam Gagner had an assist and five shots on goal during Detroit's 4-1 win versus Florida. He played 15:18 minutes in the win.

Fantasy Impact: It was his first point for the Red Wings this season in seven games played. Gagner is mostly relegated to third or fourth line duty with the Red Wings and has not posted a 10 goal season since 2017-18 with Vancouver.

Givani Smith scored a goal, and also had an assist and a fight completing the Gordie Howe Hat Trick during Detroit's 4-1 win versus Florida.

Fantasy Impact: It was Smith's first goal of the season, to go along with three assists in six games played. In his limited ice time, he does bring the lineup some much-needed energy but needs to have a consistent role and ice time to become fantasy relevent.

Anthony Mantha was a healthy scratch during the Red Wings 4-1 win versus Florida.

Fantasy Impact: Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill apparently had enough of Mantha's inconsistent play and held him out of the lineup against the Florida Panthers on Sunday. Mantha did score in three consecutive games prior to going scoreless Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 12 games this season Mantha has four goals and three assists with a team-worst minus-eight rating.

Ryan scored a goal and had three shots on net during Detroit's 3-2 overtime win versus Columbus. He also had one block in 14:29 minutes of ice time.

Fantasy Impact: With the goal, Ryan is the first player in Red Wing history to score four goals in his first three games. He has been quite a pickup for Detroit this season after signing a one-year contract after being bought out by the Ottawa Senators. While the Red Wings may not be a playoff contender they are an improved team from last season and Ryan should be in your lineups as often as possible.

Robby Fabbri scored the opening goal in the Red Wings’ 5-4 shootout win over the Lightning on Sunday. He was a minus one with one goal, two PIM and three SOG in 23:01 of ice-time. Fabbri now has 15 goals and 17 assists in 60 games played this season.

Fantasy Impact: Fabbri could reach new career highs in any of the offensive categories but could also fall short. It is clearly his best offensive output since his rookie season in 2015-2016 where he had 18 goals and 19 assists.

Valtteri Filppula scored the lone Red Wings’ goal in their 4-1 loss to the Devils on Tuesday. He was a minus one with one goal on three SOG in 16:51 of ice-time. Filppula now has six goals and 15 assists in 64 games this season.

Fantasy Impact: Filppula is in a chase with former teammate Andreas Athanasiou for leagues worst plus/minus. Filppula now must be the favorite going forward because he is still a Red Wing. His -41 is still better than Athanasiou’s -43.

Andreas Athanasiou was traded to the Edminton Oilers for two second round picks. (Source: Darren Dreger on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Athanasiou is a very fast skater and can create space quickly. His effort is often in question and his role is unknown currently. If Atanasiou can get a top two-line spot, he may be worth an add. It is hard to imagine this but is possible. He should be added to all watchlists.

Mike Green dealt to the Oilers

Mon, Feb 24th 10:20am EST
By Douglas Roth

Mike Green was traded to the Oilers for Kyle Brodziak and a conditional draft pick. (Source: Detroit Red Wings on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Green was a very good offensive defenseman in his prime. That was years ago. He still has a good shot and could see some time on one of the league’s best power-play units. He is worth putting on the watchlist and swopping up if he gets first line power-play minutes.

Jimmy Howard allowed four goals before being pulled in the second period in the Red Wings' 5-1 loss to the Penguins on Sunday. He saved 12-16 shots against. Howard dropped his record to 2-22-2 with a 4.08 GAA and a .886 SV%.

Fantasy Impact: If You own Howard you are either a masochist or have not been looking at your team all year. His play has to be some of the worst goalie play the NHL has seen in sometime.

Darren Helm scores again

Sat, Feb 15th 10:21pm EST
By Douglas Roth

Darren Helm scored a shorthanded goal in the Red Wings' 4-1 loss to the Bruins on Saturday. He was a plus one with one goal, one SHG and three SOG in 15:17 of ice-time.

Fantasy Impact: Helm now has three goals in his last three games. This is a nice story but nothing else. Leave him on the waiver wire. Helm has nine goals and six assists thru 57 games.

Brendan Perlini scored the opening goal in the Red Wings' 3-1 win over the Bruins on Sunday. He had one goal on one SOG in 12:22 of ice-time.

Fantasy Impact: Perlini was a top 15 pick in the 2014 NHL draft. He has been a disappointment in his career thus far. It does not seem that he will ever live up to those expectations.

Calvin Pickard allowed five goals in the Red Wings’ 8-2 loss to the Islanders on Tuesday. He saved 14-19 shots against while taking a no decision.

Fantasy Impact: Pickard could take over the starting goalie spot for the Red Wings but that is because he is the only one on the team under the age of 30. Even if he did take the job, he could be a speculative add but is unstart able at this time.

Filip Hronek scored a goal in the Red Wings’ 8-2 loss to the Islanders on Tuesday. He was a minus two with one goal on one SOG in 23:06 of ice-time.

Fantasy Impact: Hronek is in the midst of a breakout season leading the team in ice-time. The one factor that leaves him almost unownable is the fact that he has a plus minus of a -23. He does now have nine goals and 17 assists thru 45 games and is on about a 50-point pace for the season. If plus/minus will not impact a roster he would become must own.

Frans Nielsen scored two goals in the Red Wings’ 4-3 win over the Canadiens on Tuesday. He was a plus two with two goals on three SOG in 16:59 of ice-time.

Fantasy Impact: Nielsen raised his goal total to three to match his three assists on the season thru 39 games this season. He clearly is well passed his prime and playing out his contract. He is not worth owning in any league.

Filip Zadina scored the game-winning-goal in the Red Wings’ 4-3 win over the Canadiens on Tuesday. Zadina had a goal on four SOG in 15:08 of ice-time.

Fantasy Impact: Zadina has earned himself a spot on the first line power-play unit. He now has five goals and six assists thru 19 games this season. Look for him to only improve as the season goes on. He could be stashed for now or added to your watch list at a minimum.
