Fantasy Football Injury Report: Week 8 (2019)

Welcome to the dreaded injury report. Professional football is a violent game, and your fantasy players are going to miss time because of it. Hopefully, you don’t have many names on this list.

Case Keenum (QB – WAS)
After finishing out the first half, Case Keenum was placed in the concussion protocol at halftime and ceded the rest of the game to Dwayne Haskins. If Keenum cannot go, it’s a massive downgrade for all Redskins as Haskins has no business starting NFL games. Monitor Keenum’s progress throughout the week.

Brandin Cooks (WR – LAR)
Once again, Brandin Cooks sustained a concussion before he could do anything. Cooks did not record a reception before exiting with the brain injury. Given that this is his second of the season, he is no guarantee to be ready in short order. The good news is the Rams have next week off so Cooks has a full two weeks to recover. Josh Reynolds would start in three receiver sets if Cooks is unable to return.

Miles Sanders (RB – PHI)
The Eagles’ rookie was having a day before a shoulder injury ended his outing prematurely. If Miles Sanders has to miss any time, Jordan Howard would see a larger workload while Boston Scott appeared to be the direct replacement. Scott is not a starting option.

Chase Edmonds (RB – ARI)
Already down David Johnson, Chase Edmonds pulled his hamstring in the Cardinals’ loss to the Saints. With the team on a short week playing Thursday night, he is not going to be ready with the quick turnaround. That leaves Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris as the only healthy backs. It’s truly a dire situation. It’s hard to envision the Cardinals running much without DJ or Edmonds, and the matchup doesn’t get much tougher than the 49ers. Zenner would be the add, but he is not a recommended start.

Sam Darnold (QB – NYJ)
The Jets’ quarterback didn’t miss a snap, but Adam Gase revealed that Sam Darnold sprained his thumb in Sunday’s embarrassment against the Jaguars. Darnold has not been good by any stretch, but we’ve seen what this offense looks like without him. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.

Dede Westbrook (WR – JAX)
Playing through a questionable tag for a second straight week, Dede Westbrook suffered a neck/shoulder injury before recording a reception. With Marqise Lee also down, Keelan Cole took over in three receiver sets alongside D.J. Chark and Chris Conley. Chark remains the only Jaguars’ receiver with any fantasy relevance.

Keenan Allen (WR – LAC)
Not expected to play after suffering a late week hamstring strain, Keenan Allen suited up and looked no worse for wear. He did not aggravate his injury and should be all good going forward.

Calvin Ridley (WR – ATL)
In his first week in the post-Mohamed Sanu era, Calvin Ridley was the clear WR2. He briefly exited to get checked for a concussion, but quickly returned. He’s fine.

Matt Breida (RB – SF)
On a meaningless carry to end the first half, Matt Breida tweaked his ankle, because of course he did. Breida shows up on the injury report seemingly every week. Breida did not return. Tevin Coleman balled out and is a strong RB2 regardless of Breida’s status. Raheem Mostert is back on the RB3 radar if Breida misses any time, but Breida always seems to return. The short week would seem problematic for the iron man, but Breida said after the game he could have returned, but given the score, there was just no reason to. He looks likely to play on Thursday.

Jarvis Landry (WR – CLE)
During a garbage-time drive late in the Browns’ loss to the Patriots, Jarvis Landry fell hard on his right shoulder after a reception and was on the ground for a while. Fortunately, he returned on the Browns’ next series. Regardless, the only part of this Browns’ offense with any real fantasy value is Nick Chubb.

Aaron Jones (RB – GB)
A great day was almost deprived of becoming a monster day after Aaron Jones went to the locker room before the end of the first half with a shoulder injury. Fortunately, he came out for the second half and continued to compile numbers. He’s fine.
