Smash Spots
Logan Webb (SP – SF) vs. MIA
Logan Webb is having a terrific season, featuring a 2.49 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 20 walks and 114 strikeouts in 101.1 innings. The Giants ace has been dominant at home, so you have to love the spot against the Marlins, who have registered a 94 wRC+ against righties this season, which ranks 23rd in MLB.
Freddy Peralta (SP – MIL) vs. PIT
Freddy Peralta is having another rock-solid year for the Brewers, putting up a 2.76 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 34 walks and 90 strikeouts in 89 innings. The Brewers righty has been dominant at home, posting a 1.32 ERA in 41 innings. Up next is a terrific matchup at home against the Pirates, who have put up an 82 wRC+ versus righties (28th).
Joe Ryan (SP – MIN) vs. SEA
Joe Ryan has registered a 2.93 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 89 strikeouts in 80 innings this season. You have to be intrigued by the matchup against the Mariners, who have put up a 22.1% strikeout rate versus righties, which is tied for the 10th-most in the Majors. We’ve seen Ryan allow only .260 wOBA at home, so this projects as a quality start with strikeout upside.
Risky Starts
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (SP – LAD) @ COL
Yoshinobu Yamamoto has hit a bit of a wall in his last couple of starts, allowing four or more runs in two of his last three outings. While the Rockies are historically bad, I’m slightly concerned that the matchup at Coors Field could make Yamamoto struggle a bit. You’re not benching the Dodgers ace, but I suggest tempering your expectations.
Cristopher Sanchez (SP – PHI) @ HOU
Cristopher Sanchez continues to get it done for the Phillies, coming off a dominant outing against the Marlins. But the Phillies lefty has allowed a .309 wOBA versus righties (.249 wOBA versus lefties), and the Astros have a righty-heavy lineup. Houston has been swinging hot bats lately as well, posting a 152 wRC+ in the last seven days (second).
Jesus Luzardo (SP – PHI) @ ATL
Jesus Luzardo has shown a high ceiling this season, but he’s also been blown up for 25 runs in his last four starts. This includes a one-run outing against the Cubs on June 11th, but he went back to struggling against the Marlins (four earned runs) on June 18th. With that in mind, it’s tough to fire him up against a Braves team that seems to be turning their season around.
Two-Start Pitchers
Bailey Ober (SP – MIL) vs. SEA, @ DET
Bailey Ober has been one of the most disappointing pitchers in Major League Baseball this season, but I have a good feeling he’ll start to turn it around this week in a two-start schedule against the Mariners and Tigers. Each of these teams ranks in the bottom 10 in strikeout rate against righties, so expect a bunch of punchouts this week.
Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – ARI) @ CWS, vs. MIA
Eduardo Rodriguez has been underwhelming for the Diamondbacks, but we’ve got a chance to scoop up two wins against two of the worst teams in baseball, the White Sox and Marlins. We’ve seen him show a high ceiling at times — just look back to when he had 12 strikeouts against the Nationals on April 5th. Don’t be surprised if Rodriguez does something similar here.
Max Scherzer (SP – TOR) @ CLE, @ BOS
Max Scherzer is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays’ rotation this week, fresh off a strong outing in his rehab assignment where he struck out eight over 4.1 scoreless innings. Pick him up from the waiver wire immediately because the Blue Jays look like playoff contenders, so Scherzer could maintain season-long value outside of this two-start week.
Top Streamers
Michael McGreevy (SP – STL) vs. CHC
Michael McGreevy is coming off a strong outing against the White Sox, allowing only one earned run in five innings. This is a player with prospect pedigree who has a chance to stick on the roster if he performs well. That gives him some season-long value, so fire him up, even in a tough matchup against the Cubs.
Edward Cabrera (SP – MIA) @ SF
Edward Cabrera just turned in another good outing, this time against the Phillies, where he allowed only one earned run in 6.1 innings. The Marlins righty is showing signs that this is a legitimate breakout season, as he’s given up two runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts. Fire up Cabrera in this pitcher-friendly environment in San Francisco.
Kumar Rocker (SP – TEX) vs. SEA
Kumar Rocker put together a strong start against the White Sox in his return to the rotation, tossing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. We could see another strong start against the Mariners, who have the 10th-highest strikeout rate in the Majors. Like McGreevy, Rocker has the upside to stick on your fantasy team all year long.
