Smash Spots
Sonny Gray (SP – STL) @ PIT
Sonny Gray is coming off a dominant outing where he tossed a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts and only one hit allowed against the Guardians. This puts Gray’s season-long numbers at a 3.36 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Up next is a terrific matchup against the Pirates.
Jesus Luzardo (SP – PHI) vs. CIN
Jesus Luzardo is having a rollercoaster season, with some major blowups of late, but the Phillies lefty is coming off a great outing against the Mets, where he pitched 6.2 scoreless innings. Luzardo has an exploitable matchup on tap against a Reds lineup that struggles against lefties.
Shota Imanaga (SP – CHC) @ CLE
Shota Imanaga was terrific in his return to action, going five innings with one hit and zero earned runs against the Cardinals. This included one walk and three strikeouts. You have to be excited for Imanaga’s next start against a Guardians lineup that has had issues with lefties all season.
Risky Starts
Hunter Brown (SP – HOU) @ COL
Hunter Brown is surpassing preseason expectations with a 1.74 ERA and 0.89 WHIP, but there’s a bit of risk in firing him up at Coors Field. You’re not benching Brown, especially since the Rockies’ bats are atrocious, but don’t expect another dominant outing in this one.
Robbie Ray (SP -SF) @ ARI
Robbie Ray has been a reliable innings-eater for the Giants, putting up a 2.83 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 92.1 innings. However, this is a difficult spot on the road against the Diamondbacks, who are one of the toughest lineups in baseball, especially at home. There’s a risk that this outing could be damaging to your ratios.
Framber Valdez (SP – HOU) @ LAD
Framber Valdez is turning in yet another rock-solid season, featuring a 2.88 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 103 innings, but it’s hard to trust him against the Dodgers. Not only does this team mash lefties, but they’re even better at home. While Valdez can slow down any offense, don’t be surprised if this one turns out to be one of his worst outings of the year.
Two-Start Pitchers
Edward Cabrera (SP – MIA) vs. MIN, vs. MIL
Edward Cabrera has been solid for the Marlins this season, registering a 3.78 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 69 strikeouts in 64.1 innings. The Marlins righty has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts. You have to love that Cabrera will be getting two home starts this week versus the Twins and Brewers.
Chase Burns (SP – CIN) @ BOS, @ PHI
Chase Burns looked terrific for the Reds in his big-league debut, issuing zero walks with eight strikeouts against the Yankees. While he allowed three runs in five innings, you have to love that strikeout-to-walk ratio. Up next are two tough matchups against the Red Sox at Fenway and the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Grant Holmes (SP – ATL) vs. LAA, vs. BAL
Grant Holmes has a 3.70 ERA and 1.26 WHIP on the season, and is set for two exploitable matchups against the strikeout-prone Angels and disappointing Orioles. We’ve seen Holmes go deep into games at times, so there’s a good chance he’ll rack up at least one win in this two-start week.
Top Streamers
Jacob Lopez (SP – ATH) @ TB, vs. SF
Jacob Lopez has been quite the revelation for the Athletics, allowing one run or fewer in four consecutive outings. During this stretch, the Athletics lefty has racked up 30 strikeouts in only 23 innings. You have to ride the wave with Lopez while he’s this red-hot, so fire him up at the Rays and versus the Giants.
Ryne Nelson (SP – ARI) vs. SF, vs. KC
Ryne Nelson is another pitcher who is in a rhythm right now, allowing one run or fewer in six of his last seven starts. The Diamondbacks righty has a pair of exploitable matchups at home against the Giants and Royals, so fire him up to see if he can keep this hot streak going.
David Festa (SP – MIN) @ MIA
David Festa has a lot of strikeout upside, so you have to consider streaming him on the road against the Marlins in a pitcher-friendly environment. The Twins righty is coming off a strong outing against the Tigers, where he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, so perhaps this is the start of a nice run.
