Smash Spots

Hunter Brown (SP – HOU) vs. ATH

You have to like Hunter Brown’s chances at a quality start with high strikeout upside in a home outing against the Athletics. We saw the Astros ace dominate the A’s earlier in the season, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Shota Imanaga (SP – CHC) @ CWS

Shota Imanaga is coming off a strong start against the Red Sox, where he tossed seven scoreless innings. The Cubs lefty has given up a combined three earned runs in his last three outings. Up next is a great matchup against the lowly White Sox.

Ryne Nelson (SP – ARI) @ PIT

Ryne Nelson has been a revelation for the Diamondbacks this year, allowing two earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 11 starts. Look for Nelson to keep the good times rolling in an exploitable matchup versus the Pirates.

Risky Starts

Nathan Eovaldi (SP – TEX) vs. ATL

Nathan Eovaldi was scratched from his weekend start against the Tigers due to back stiffness. While he’s tentatively scheduled to start this week, it’s a bad matchup against the Braves. If you’re in a weekly league, it may be a good idea to leave Eovaldi on your bench.

Ryan Pepiot (SP – TB) @ CIN

Ryan Pepiot is coming off a mediocre outing against the Orioles, where he gave up five earned runs in six innings. It’s tough to feel comfortable about starting the Rays righty on the road in the bandbox that is Great American Ball Park.

Ranger Suarez (SP – PHI) @ NYY

Ranger Suarez struggled against the Angels in his first outing of the second half, so it’s hard to feel confident about starting him at Yankee Stadium against Aaron Judge and company.

Two-Start Pitchers

Eury Perez (SP – MIA) vs. SD, @ MIL

Eury Perez has turned the corner for the Marlins, allowing a combined one earned run in his last three starts. You have to be excited about the upcoming two-step against the Padres and Brewers, given that recent form.

Kodai Senga (SP – NYM) vs. LAA, @ SF

I love the matchup for Kodai Senga against the Angels, who are the most strikeout-prone lineup in baseball. Add in a pitcher’s park in San Francisco, and you have to like Senga’s chances at a pair of quality starts.

Zac Gallen (SP – ARI) vs. HOU, @ PIT

Zac Gallen has been inconsistent all year, but I love the matchup on the road against the Pirates. We just need him to come out of the Astros’ start unscathed, but I’m confident he can do so given his recent form, allowing one earned run or fewer in two of his last three outings.
