Fantasy Football Help: Expert Advice for Struggling Teams

Welcome to the Thanksgiving Week edition of the fantasy football therapy and complaint desk. As always, I am answering some of the questions that fantasy football managers are asking in the FantasyPros Discord server. There are several interesting scenarios that fantasy managers are wrestling with this week. Here are some of the latest submissions, along with my responses.

Trade Advice

Buy/Sell/Hold: Kyle Monangai, Emanuel Wilson, Michael Wilson. I am debating whether to send them to their respective D’Andre Swift/Josh Jacobs/Marvin Harrison Jr. owners or hold them.

I am selling Emanuel Wilson. We’ll always have the two-touchdown game from last week, but I expect Josh Jacobs to return to the Packers’ starting lineup this week. Once he does, Wilson will once again become an afterthought. He may get more work than he had previously. However, his workload will not be sufficient for you ever to be comfortable starting him. I am holding Kyle Monangai. Monangai has elevated himself into weekly Flex consideration. He has finished among the top 30 running backs in four straight games and five out of the last six. Monangai has some tough matchups coming up, but has earned a bigger role in Chicago’s rushing attack alongside D’Andre Swift.

Michael Wilson has had what feels like the most hilariously random two-game stretch in recent memory. Before Week 11, Wilson had played 38 NFL games. In those 38 games, he had high benchmarks of eight receptions and 95 receiving yards. Both of those marks were accomplished in separate games. Then in Week 11, he caught 15 passes for 185 yards. Wilson followed that up last week by catching 10 balls for 118 yards. He has two straight top-10 weekly finishes, even though he hasn’t scored a touchdown in either game. Sure, those numbers will most likely decrease when Marvin Harrison Jr. returns. But I am at least buying Wilson as a Flex option, and he should continue to be a PPR beast for as long as Harrison remains sidelined.

Should I trade Derrick Henry and Jake Ferguson for Trey McBride?

I have to be honest. I wouldn’t trade Derrick Henry for Trey McBride straight up. And I love McBride. But Derrick Henry is still an elite fantasy running back. In his last six games, he has five weekly finishes inside the top 14 in half-PPR leagues. That includes three top-eight finishes. He and Lamar Jackson may not look exactly like their 2024 selves. However, this is the time of year when Henry usually carries fantasy football teams on his back. Not coincidentally, Baltimore faces the Cincinnati Bengals in two of their next three games. Cincinnati has allowed the most fantasy points and yards to opposing running backs this year.

By the way, Jake Ferguson is also good in his own right. He enters this week as the overall TE4 in total fantasy points and TE7 (TE6 if you remove Tucker Kraft) on a per-game basis. The upgrade from Ferguson to McBride is minimal compared to what you will probably lose by letting go of Derrick Henry. Trade him at your own risk.

Waiver Wire & Lineup Advice

Bucky Irving is coming off my IR spot next week, but I gotta drop a running back. Which one should I drop? Zach Charbonnet or RJ Harvey?

At the risk of sounding like I am answering this question in riddle form, let me say this. Zach Charbonnet could very well outscore RJ Harvey over the next five weeks. He has finished as a weekly Flex or better in six out of 10 games played this season. He gets a solid amount of work down by the goal line and plays in an elite offense. The weekly touchdown upside is there. However, here is why I am picking Harvey over him. Every week, we as fantasy managers must decide who to start before the games are played. With Harvey taking over the role as Denver’s lead back, I will be more confident in starting him over Charbonnet every week.

Does that mean it will always work out that way? Of course not. There will be a game or two where Charbonnet scores a touchdown, and Harvey doesn’t. But I will rank Harvey ahead of Charbonnet every week for as long as their current roles remain intact. Therefore, I would rather have Harvey. Having said that, I would not automatically assume that Bucky Irving returns to a 20+ touch weekly role upon his return. He has been out of action for two months, and Rachaad White and Sean Tucker are still there. Much like they are doing with Chris Godwin, I expect Tampa Bay to ramp up Irving’s workload over the next few weeks. I still think I would drop Charbonnet among those options, but I would be a bit cautious about starting Irving right away.

Should I pick up John Metchie III and drop Kayshon Boutte?

I do not know if I am quite there yet, but I understand it. The arrow is pointing up for John Metchie from a fantasy perspective. He has scored in back-to-back games and secured nine out of 10 targets in that span. The New York Jets are devoid of pass-catchers, so Metchie could be a serviceable PPR Flex for as long as Garrett Wilson is out.

However, I still prefer Kayshon Boutte. He can be a volatile fantasy commodity with wild weekly swings. But Boutte also faces the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens among New England’s next three opponents. Both are among the worst teams in the league at limiting fantasy production from the tight end position. Give me the guy catching passes from an MVP candidate over the one catching them from a journeyman quarterback.

Is it time to drop Romeo Doubs for someone with higher upside? He’s currently my WR5 behind Ja’Marr Chase, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashee Rice and Tetairoa McMillan.

It is always tough to answer questions like this without additional context. For example, which receivers are available on the waiver wire? That would play a significant factor in giving you a more proper answer. And I know this is going to sound weird, but considering your other wide receivers, a floor player like Romeo Doubs isn’t the worst thing in the world.

You have Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Ja’Marr Chase and Rashee Rice as your top three wideouts. Those three players have combined for 17 top-10 weeks in 26 games. The three of them are weekly WR1s in 10- and 12-team leagues, and they never leave your lineup. Tetairoa McMillan is the overall WR9 in total points, though just 18th in points per game. Doubs has finished inside the top 40 in eight out of 11 games. He’s about as steady a WR5 as there is.

Drop Chris Godwin for the Chargers defense for next week?

I have Chris Godwin on a team and have held him for a reason. Will that work out in the long term? I am not sure. However, I have not held him for three months to drop him for a defense. And I am definitely not dropping him for the Los Angeles Chargers defense.

Yes, they face the Las Vegas Raiders this week. But after that, their next three games are against Philadelphia, Kansas City and Dallas. All three of those teams rank among the bottom 10 in fantasy points allowed to opposing D/ST units. I do not mind streaming the Chargers defense this week. But do so at the expense of your current D/ST or a throwaway player. Godwin can still have some value once Tampa Bay ramps up his usage.
