FanDuel Market Watch: Week 3

Let’s take a look at notable salary changes as we head into Week 3 of the NFL season.

Quarterbacks

Trevor Siemian (DEN): $7,400 @ BUF (+$800)
Siemian has posted nearly identical fantasy outings over his first two starts in 2017, which has resulted in the biggest salary jump among all quarterbacks heading into Week 3. The Broncos will travel to Buffalo this week, where they will face a defense who has allowed just 187 and 228 passing yards over their first two games. Buffalo has yet to surrender a passing touchdown, but facing the Jets in Week 1 and a hobbled Cam Newton in Week 2 never hurts. Still, I don’t know that we can trust Siemian just yet, especially after taking on such a big raise in salary.

Carson Palmer (ARI): $7,300 vs. DAL (-$200)
I’m going back to the well one more time with Palmer, as he and the Cardinals return home for a primetime showdown against the Cowboys. Palmer is off to a rough start to the 2017 season, as he’s thrown four interceptions already while completing just 54.7% of his passes. Hopefully, a return home will do him and the offense a favor, as they look to sharpen things up after an ugly Week 2 win. Palmer was noticeably better at home last season, as he completed 63.5% of his passes at home, as opposed to 58% on the road. He also was much more efficient in the touchdown to interception department, as he tossed 13 scores against three picks at home while throwing 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the road last year. The Cowboys present an interesting challenge defensively, but they did just surrender four passing touchdowns to Trevor Siemian, so there’s certainly some upside to be had in tournaments.

Running Backs

Chris Carson (SEA): $6,000 @ TEN (+$800)
Carson was on the field for 61% of the Seahawks’ offensive snaps in Week 2, so the workload certainly caused a spike in his salary heading into Week 3. He rushed 20 times for 93 yards while catching one pass for seven yards in Week 2, which left a touchdown as the only thing missing. The only word of caution that I will pass along is that despite Eddie Lacy being a healthy scratch in Week 2, this is still a muddled backfield situation. Keep in mind that Thomas Rawls was just returning from an ankle injury last week, and C.J. Prosise still looms in the passing game. That’s not to say that Carson hasn’t emerged as the frontrunner, but there still is a possibility of a timeshare, so don’t go all in with him in Week 3.

Jordan Howard (CHI): $6,800 vs. PIT (-$600)
Howard’s snap count dropped in Week 2, as he was on the field for just 48% of the offensive snaps, after logging 57% in Week 1. It’s unclear whether this was due to injury or not, but I’m guessing it’s not only that but also game flow. The Bears were playing from behind early, which suits Tarik Cohen more, so that could be the ultimate reason why Howard was limited. If game flow is indeed the case, that could be an issue again in Week 3 against the Steelers. Pittsburgh also poses a tough matchup on the ground, as they’ve surrendered 148 total rushing yards through two games. They did allow a rushing touchdown in each contest, but those are tough to predict, which becomes even more difficult to do if the player isn’t on the field much.

Wide Receivers

Brandon Coleman (NO): $5,500 @ CAR (+$900)
Coleman saw the biggest salary jump among receivers this week, as he scored 16.2 FDP against the Patriots in Week 2. He was on the field for 89% of the offensive snaps, while providing one of the few bright spots for the Saints’ offense. His inconsistencies are tough to stomach, especially with a quarterback who isn’t afraid to spread the ball around to all of his options. Week 3 will be the last week without Willie Snead, so while the snaps should be there, the matchup leaves something to be desired as the Saints are at the Panthers.

A.J. Green (CIN): $7,500 @ GB (-$700)
The Bengals’ offense is such a mess that they’ve fired their offensive coordinator after just two games, which is directly correlated to the fact that they’ve scored zero touchdowns in two full games at home. The offensive malaise has led to star receiver A.J. Green’s salary plummeting, which creates an interesting scenario. The targets have been there both contests, but absolutely nothing has come out of those looks. Toss in uncertainty over new play calling and whether or not Andy Dalton can break out of his funk and you can see why there’s trepidation over using him right now. All told, I think Green merits tournament consideration at this price, as it has plenty of profit potential, just be sure you don’t have him in every single lineup.

Tight Ends

Dwayne Allen (NE): $5,600 vs. HOU (+$700)
The price jump for Allen is of the speculative type, as he’s scored exactly zero fantasy points this season. However, Rob Gronkowski is dealing with a groin injury, so Allen figures to see a bump in usage should Gronkowski miss Week 3. The Patriots are normally very coy in regards to injury, so this is certainly a situation worth monitoring as the week progresses.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins (NYJ): $4,500 vs. MIA
Seferian-Jenkins’ price somehow trickled down despite not playing yet this season due to a suspension, which is now completed. He figures to be one of the primary options in the Jets’ passing attack, and with Seferian-Jenkins seemingly rededicated, now could be the time to buy. Athleticism has never been an issue for the talented tight end, but issues off of the field have. I would certainly have some exposure this week in tournaments, especially at this price. If reports are true about his renewed dedication to the sport, this could be a breakout season for the mercurial tight end from Washington.
