FanDuel NBA Value Plays: Monday (1/22)

Welcome to another edition of FanDuel value plays. No better way to start the week than finishing in the green on a Monday. A large slate of nine games tonight should offer enough opportunity to find some value and spend up on fantasy studs. In looking over the positions, it seems the one position that lacks value tonight is the center position so it may be wise to spend up there. Other than that with some notable injuries and a number of players listed as day-to-day it’s very important to stay updated on the latest injury news to get the best values. As always the players listed below will be under the $5,500 price tag, good luck!

Point Guard

Ricky Rubio (UTA): $5,400 @ATL

Ricky Rubio has a juicy matchup with an Atlanta Hawks team that is flat out playing poorly right now. Atlanta ranks 25th in defense against the point guard position and just allowed Jerian Grant, a backup point guard for the Bulls to log 26.2 FD points. That being said Rubio has been playing very well of late averaging 29.8 FD points over his past three games. He would need to get to 27 tonight to get 5x value, which should be very achievable against the Hawks and something he’s done in four of the past six games, including the past three. While the game has a modest 205 over/under according to Westgate, Rubio should see a high enough usage rate to reach value.

Rajon Rondo (NO): $5,200 vs. CHI

It’s wise to get find value in a game that sports the slates highest over/under at 226. That’s what we have in the Pelicans and Bulls matchup. Both teams rank in the top 11 in possessions per game according to NBA.com so it should be a fast-paced shootout. Chicago ranks a modest 18th against the point guard position which should offer Rondo enough opportunity to produce 26 FD points to get 5x value. Rondo has been a bit inconsistent lately, but offers the kind of upside of 40+ FD points. He’s a bit of a risky value play as he’s averaged just 24 FD points per game to this point in the season and doesn’t typically offer much in the scoring department. His assist numbers should be high however with Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins primed for big games.

Shooting Guard

Justin Holiday (CHI): $5,500 at NO

As with Rajon Rondo, grabbing a piece of the game with the highest over/under would be wise. New Orleans ranks 24th against the shooting guard position and with Zach LaVine still on a minute restriction and Kris Dunn already ruled out Holiday should find plenty of opportunity in this up and down game to get to the 27.5 FD points he’d need to validate his selection. Holiday has been playing well of late averaging 14 points, five rebounds and two assists per game over his past five games. He’s played at least 31 minutes in each of those five games as well so he will see enough time on the court to produce. Also, Chicago may be forced to play through their guards since the Pelicans rank in the top half of the league against the frontcourt. Take that into account when considering Holiday as an option.

Tony Snell (MIL): $4,300 vs. PHO

Tony Snell’s selection would be advised solely if Giannis Antetokounmpo is ruled out for tonight’s matchup against the Suns. If Antetokounmpo is ruled out Snell will likely get the start against a Suns team likes to get up and down the floor ranking in the top five in possessions per game. It’s also worth noting Snell posted a line of 15 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals against Philadelphia the last time he started. Phoenix does rank a decent 15th against the small forward position, which is where Snell would slot in if he starts tonight, but that shouldn’t be enough to keep him from notching more than the 21.5 FD points he’d need for value.

Small Forward

Joe Ingles (UTA): $5,300 at ATL

Joe Ingles gets an opportunity tonight to go up against the Atlanta Hawks who rank 28th in defense against the small forward position. Atlanta seems content with tanking right now, which is why you see two members of the Jazz show up in these value plays. Ingles is a player who can fill it up offensively and produce decent rebounding numbers. While his upside is somewhat limited he offers a high floor for a player of this cost. He’s hit at least 23 FD points in seven of his past eight games. While he’d need to reach 26.5 to get 5x value tonight, the matchup against the Hawks is what could help get him there. He’s averaged 28 FD points over his past three games all against sub-par defenses, look for that trend to continue tonight.

Dillon Brooks (MEM): $4,000 vs. PHI

Dillon Brooks is listed as questionable tonight with an illness, however, if he does end up suiting up he could be primed for a big night. Memphis will already be without Chandler Parsons, James Ennis and JaMychal Green so they are hurting for wing players. Enter Brooks, who’s been playing very well of late, scoring in double-figures in four straight games while averaging four rebounds during that stretch. His low price tag of $4,000 means he’d only need to reach 20 FD points for value, which he’s done in each of the past four games. With the injuries piling up and a matchup against Philadelphia who ranks 22nd in defense against small forwards, Brooks could be in line for high volume and opportunity.

Power Forward

Jarell Martin (MEM): $4,000 vs. PHI

Jarell Martin shows up here for a lot of the same reasons Dillon Brooks is listed above. Martin is also listed as questionable tonight, but is expected to suit up. Memphis is already without JaMychal Green so he would start if he does end up suiting up. Coming in at the $4,000 price tag he’d need 20 FD points for value and he’s achieved that in three straight games, including 31 FD points against the Knicks three games ago. Philadelphia ranks 14th against the power forward position and he’d likely matchup against Ben Simmons, but don’t let that deter you from choosing him. He’s a good candidate to reach value tonight as he should see plenty of playing time and opportunity to produce. Martin has reached double-digits in scoring in three of the past four games and has averaged five rebounds during that stretch as well.

Kelly Olynyk (MIA): $4,500 at HOU

Kelly Olynyk draws a good matchup tonight against a Houston team that struggles against power forwards ranking 25th. This game also sports a nice 214 over/under which should provide plenty of opportunity for Olynyk who has scored at least 12 points in each of his past four games. In his last outing against the Hornets Olynyk scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds so his does offer double-double upside. $4,500 is a modest price tag, requiring him to produce 22.5 FD points to get value, which he’s done in three of the past four games including two games exceeding 30 FD points. With his recent hot shooting combined with a good matchup, he should be able to reach his value tonight.

Center

Marcin Gortat (WAS): $4,700 at DAL

On paper, Marcin Gortat does not have a good matchup against a Dallas Mavericks team that ranks fifth against opposing centers. However, it is a matchup that Gortat could exploit. Dallas ranks towards the bottom of the league in possessions per game and a slower game could benefit the big man for the Wizards. He has been struggling recently with scoring and has gone three straight games below 10 rebounds, but he should regress back towards the mean tonight. He averages 24 FD points per game on the season and will need 23.5 FD points to get value tonight. His price has been marked down due to recent play and matchup, so it may be wise to buy low on him tonight. He is still the type that has double-double upside on any given night. His season averages are nine points and eight rebounds, so if he can inch those up just a bit tonight he’d definitely hit value.
