Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft

Considering we are in the third slot, we will run this draft as a rebuilding team. We first need to discuss how you should build when your team is further away from the playoffs than you would like.

As we embark on this draft, you’ll notice a deliberate pattern in our selections. When rebuilding, our strategy is to strengthen our wide receiver room first, secure a strong quarterback, and then leverage future draft capital to trade for running backs.

This approach is rooted in the understanding that the shelf life of a wide receiver and a quarterback is typically longer than that of a running back. Therefore, drafting a running back when we’re still a pretender in our league would be risky, potentially keeping us in a perpetual rebuild.

Now, let’s delve into the draft itself. We’ll show you every pick and explain the rationale behind our selections and one special sleeper, giving you a deeper understanding of our strategy and decision-making process.

FIRST ROUND

Remember, we are a rebuild in progress, so selecting Odunze was following the pattern of the best available while also understanding we won’t see our full potential in season one. Odunze will have to share the field with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen this year. This duo will cut into Odunze’s target share, but as the ninth overall pick, he will be remembered within this offense.

Odunze enters the NFL with some beautiful stats attached to his name. He had a youthful breakout at 19 while collecting a 33% dominator rating, which placed him fourth in this draft class. The Bears drafted Odunze to pair with rookie QB Caleb Williams. This duo is similar to when the Bengals selected Tee Higgins to help Joe Burrow develop in the NFL. Odunze’s blend of size, breakout age, and toughness should shine in the NFL.

SECOND ROUND

If McConkey drops to you at 2.03, you must draft him. Ladd grants your team a polished route runner who can break in and out of his cuts. He also provides speed with his sub 4.4 40-yard dash at the combine.

McConkey is a promising prospect attached to a superstar quarterback in Justin Herbert as well as a great coach in Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers also traded up for Ladd, meaning they value him in their offense.

In this new Chargers offense, running will be crucial, but the ability to break off of your defender on your routes will cause Harbaugh to foam at the mouth. McConkey has a safe floor with a high reward potential for your team.

THIRD ROUND

In our third-round selection, we have been graced to receive a starting quarterback in the NFL. Nix should start for the Broncos, as he is the apple of Sean Payton’s eye. Also, Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham don’t exactly scream “Better Than Bo” when you watch their tape in the NFL.

Nix is a completion machine, as he had the nation’s highest completion rate at 77.4%, breaking the record formerly held by Mac Jones. One of the biggest concerns for Nix, which forced his slip into the third round of this mock, is his age heading into the NFL. However, at quarterback, age is truly nothing but a number. If Nix can give you at minimum three years starting in a 1QB league, you will be happy with this production in the third round.

Thoughts on this Draft

For our team, this dynasty draft went exceptionally well for our future. We built on our depth and talent at wide receiver. We also drafted a quarterback who should start, if not right away, at least mid-season in 2024.

Remember to draft for talent when drafting for your team and trade for need. Even if you are strong in a position and a player falls to you, don’t allow other teams to fill gaps and get stronger just because you are “set” at this position.

*Always remember that if you believe in someone, you should try to draft him. Sadly, I left this draft without Bucky Irving, who I love in rookie mock drafts this season. He lands in a situation in Tampa Bay where he could take over the role from Rachaad White, who didn’t produce as well as an NFL team would like. Even though White was great for fantasy, the two realms differentiate and do matter for the length of a running back. Iriving provides great hands out of the backfield, but this would have pulled us from our building plan for more than now.*

Thank you for following along in this draft. My recommendation is to do as many mock drafts as possible within your league to see how your board will break down.
