Every Friday, we’ll take a closer look at the upcoming week and rank every starting pitcher based on their overall skills, recent production, head-to-head matchup and park factor. These rankings are for Monday, June 16th through Sunday, June 22nd.

Smash Spots
Nick Pivetta (SP – SD) vs. KC
Nick Pivetta is coming off a poor outing, but that was against one of the toughest lineups in baseball, the Dodgers.
Some of Pivetta’s best work has come at home this season, including two seven-inning shutouts. Up next is a great spot against the Royals, who have put up a 95 wRC+ in the last seven days.
Cristopher Sanchez (SP – PHI) @ MIA
Cristopher Sanchez hasn’t been nearly as good on the road, but this is a spot where he can turn in a quality outing in a pitcher-friendly environment against the Marlins.
The Phillies’ lefty has allowed two runs or fewer in three consecutive outings. He’s also shown a high ceiling, with three starts with nine or more strikeouts.
Ranger Suarez (SP – PHI) @ MIA
Ranger Suarez is rolling right now, giving up a combined six runs in his last six starts, spanning 39.2 innings.
This is another Phillies starter in a great spot on the road against the Marlins. Expect Suarez to keep the good times rolling with this favorable matchup.
Risky Starts
Jack Flaherty (SP – DET) @ TB
Jack Flaherty has an impressive 29.7% strikeout rate with a 3.21 SIERA on the season, picking up right where he left off last year.
However, this is a tough spot on the road in a Minor League ballpark at George M. Steinbrenner Field. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a short outing that is damaging to your WHIP.
Framber Valdez (SP – HOU) @ ATH
Framber Valdez is on fire right now, racking up double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back outings, including 12 against the White Sox in his last start.
Any time you have a pitcher taking on the A’s in the bandbox that is Sutter Health Park, you need to temper your expectations a bit.
Tanner Bibee (SP – CLE) @ ATH
Tanner Bibee has gotten back on track lately, allowing a combined five earned runs in his last two starts across 12.2 innings.
Like Valdez, Bibee has a tough matchup on the road against the A’s. You’re still starting him, but we have to acknowledge the risk that comes with this venue.
Two-Start Pitchers
Clarke Schmidt (SP – NYY) vs. LAA, vs. BAL
Clarke Schmidt has been terrific lately, allowing zero earned runs in two of his last three starts, including six shutout innings against the Royals.
Up next is a two-start week against the Angels and Orioles. Los Angeles is one of the most strikeout-prone teams in baseball, so we could see seven or more strikeouts from Schmidt against the Angels.
Will Warren (SP – NYY) vs. LAA, vs. BAL
Will Warren has been inconsistent this season, but he’s shown a high ceiling, including 10 strikeouts in 5.2 shutout innings against the Rangers on May 20th.
There’s a good chance Warren will have another big game for strikeouts against the Angels, who rank 30th in strikeout rate versus righties this season.
Andrew Abbott (SP – CIN) vs. MIN, @ STL
Andrew Abbott is exceeding expectations this season, allowing one run or fewer in seven of his last eight starts, putting his season-long numbers at a 1.87 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.
You’re firing up Abbott while he’s in a great rhythm like this, even against the Twins and Cardinals.
Top Streamers
David Festa (SP – MIN) @ CIN, vs. MIL
David Festa is coming off a strong outing against the Rangers, where he allowed two runs in six strong innings. Remember, though, Festa is a pitcher with some prospect pedigree.
We saw Festa put up a 30.6% strikeout rate in the Minors this year, so there’s some upside here. Fire him up for a two-start week against the Reds and Brewers.
Edward Cabrera (SP – MIA) vs. PHI
Edward Cabrera has been rock-solid this season, featuring a 3.92 SIERA and 14.7% K-BB rate. The key has been that he’s cut his walk rate from 12% to 9.6% so far.
If Cabrera can maintain these improvements in command, we could be looking at a breakout season. Ride with the Marlins righty against a Phillies lineup without Bryce Harper.
Ben Casparius (SP – LAD) vs. SD
Ben Casparius is moving to the starting rotation, making him an appealing upside play. We could see him rack up wins while pitching for one of the best teams across MLB in the Dodgers.
Casparius was solid against the Padres in his last outing, allowing two runs in four innings. I’d take the shot again, especially in a home matchup.
