Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Christian Yelich, Madison Bumgarner, Matt Carpenter

Welcome to the Week 15 edition of the Fantasy Baseball Injury Report. We’ve got all the latest news and injury updates heading into the All-Star break. Here are a few headlines for this week.

Christian Yelich (OF – MIL) was out of Sunday’s lineup seemingly as a rest day, but he pulled out of the Home Run Derby with a back injury. There is no official word on if he will play in the All-Star Game, but this appears precautionary. Matt Chapman will replace him in Monday’s Home Run Derby.

Madison Bumgarner (SP – SF) took a line drive off his elbow in Saturday’s start. After some obvious initial concerns, the Giants are confident he will make his next start after the All-Star break.

Matt Carpenter (1B/2B/3B – STL) was placed on the 10-day injured list July 2, retroactive to June 29, with a lower back strain. Carpenter was in bed for 40 hours with a stomach sickness and hurt his back in the process. He has a history of back injuries, but the Cardinals are optimistic that he will be available immediately after the All-Star break.

Jake Odorizzi (SP – MIN) went on the 10-day injured list July 3 with a blister on his right middle finger. He is expected to make his return after the All-Star break.

Here are a few more injuries to track this week.

Tommy La Stella (2B – LAA)
La Stella hit the 10-day injured list July 3 after fracturing his right tibia. The expected recovery time for this kind of injury is eight-10 weeks. That would have La Stella possibly returning in September at the earliest.

Luke Voit (1B – NYY)
Voit was placed on the 10-day injured list July 2 with an abdominal strain. He does not currently have a set timetable to return.

Justin Upton (OF – LAA)
Upton has not played since coming out of Wednesday’s game early with quad tightness. Currently listed as day-to-day, the outfielder is optimistic that he’ll be ready once action resumes later this week.

Dansby Swanson (SS – ATL)
Swanson was out of Atlanta’s lineup Friday and Saturday with quad discomfort, but he returned Sunday and appears to be fine going forward.

Ryan Braun (1B/OF – MIL)
Out of the starting lineup since Wednesday with knee discomfort, Braun pinch-hit Friday and is currently listed as day-to-day.

David Peralta (OF – ARI)
Peralta was placed on the 10-day injured list July 5 with a right shoulder injury. This is his second time on the IL with the same issue, so Arizona is likely to exercise more caution and keep him sidelined longer than his last 12-day absence.

Brian Anderson (3B/OF – MIA)
Anderson had to come out of July 2’s game with an elbow contusion. While he hasn’t started since, he came off the bench in each of Miami’s last three games. He is listed as day-to-day.

Anthony Rendon (3B – WSH)
Rendon has been dealing with quad and hamstring tightness that will keep him from participating in his first All-Star Game. He’s not expected to miss any actual games.

Brandon Lowe (2B/OF – TB)
Right after making the All-Star team as a replacement, Lowe was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a bone bruise on his right shin. He will probably return to the Rays shortly after the break.

Scooter Gennett (2B – CIN)
Gennett, dealing with groin tightness, has not started any of Cincinnati’s last four games. He did, however, pinch-hit on Saturday and is currently listed as day-to-day.

Nick Senzel (2B/OF – CIN)
Senzel left Sunday’s game after running into the outfield wall. He has a sprained right ankle, but it’s unclear if the rookie will require an IL stay beyond the break.

C.J. Cron (1B – MIN)
Minnesota placed Cron on the IL with right thumb inflammation. This could be a precautionary move done because of the break, as the Twins don’t expect him to miss much more than the minimum.

Jake Arrieta (SP – PHI)
Arrieta has a bone spur in his pitching elbow that will likely require surgery at some point. He will consult with team doctors this week to determine if he can keep pitching through the injury this season.

Updating Previous Injuries

Gregory Polanco (OF – PIT): Shoulder
Polanco is nearing a return after beginning a Triple-A rehab assignment last week. He has been on the 10-day injured list since June 22 with posterior shoulder inflammation.

Alex Wood (SP – CIN): Back
Wood has yet to make his debut with the Reds after struggling with lower back spasms since spring training. Sent on a Triple-A rehab assignment last weekend, he could arrive in Cincinnati in late July or August.

A.J. Pollock (OF – LAD): Elbow
Pollock had elbow surgery in May and was sent on a Single-A rehab assignment July 4. He may be able to return Friday.

Marcus Stroman (SP – TOR): Pectoral
Stroman had to leave June’s 29 start and was scratched last Wednesday. He is still listed as day-to-day at this point.

Cole Hamels (SP – CHC): Oblique
Hamels received good news this week on his strained oblique that has had him on the shelf since June 29. An MRI revealed there is not a significant injury, and he may be able to return soon after the All-Star break.

Corey Seager (SS – LAD): Hamstring
Placed on the injured list June 13 with a hamstring strain, Seager partook in a rehab assignment last week and appears ready to return to the Dodgers after the All-Star break.
