DraftKings Projected Roster Percentage: Week 5 (2020)

DraftKings Projected Roster Percentage: Week 5 (2020)

Week 5 is here, and we’re now a quarter of the way through the NFL season. After some coronavirus scares moved a few games around, Sunday’s total slate is a bit smaller.

Each week, I’ll break down the projected player roster percentages at the top DFS sites. These figures are generated based on numbers pulled from full-slate contests, so they won’t be perfectly accurate, but they give us a good measurement of who’s popular.

Quarterback

Patrick Mahomes is close to chalk this week against the Raiders. You should bet on him in cash leagues and bet against him in tournaments. Mahomes has routinely blown out the Raiders (he’s scored 30-plus points twice), but that can come with game script consequences — you’re betting on him to score a ton of points before the Chiefs pivot to the running game.

Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott should both be popular plays against questionable defenses. While the Ravens have blowout potential, the Cowboys’ defense isn’t good enough to keep their opponents from coming back — even if it’s the Giants. Unsurprisingly, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones makes the list as a result.

Including Jones, six quarterbacks should be featured on above five percent of rosters. Deshaun Watson and Gardner Minshew look like popular plays in the first game of the post-Bill O’Brien era, Matt Ryan and Teddy Bridgewater will end up in lots of lineups in what should be a high-scoring game, and Kyler Murray should be able to run all over the New York Jets.

Running Back, Wide Receiver, and Tight End

At running back, Edwards-Helaire is near chalk, and when the Chiefs inevitably get up big against the Raiders, he’s in for a run-heavy game script. There’s a chance that the Chiefs pull him in favor of Darrel Williams or Darwin Thompson to help run out to clock, however. Ezekiel Elliott should see a good chunk of usage as the Cowboys probably won’t need to come from behind this week, even if the Giants do manage to keep pace.

Mike Davis has looked great while replacing Christian McCaffrey, and he has a great chance to put up tons of points against an Atlanta defense that struggles against running backs in the passing game. Josh Jacobs and David Johnson wrap up the list, and while I think Jacobs will be in too bad of a game script to justify starting him in DFS, Johnson should be in for a big day.

DeAndre Hopkins is the closest to chalk at wide receiver this week, but he’s not a wildly popular option. The Cards should have a big day against the Jets; the question is how much volume Hopkins will get before the Cardinals start running out the clock. I would look elsewhere at wide receiver.

Two tight ends crack the list — Darren Waller and Travis Kelce. The high-volume options will line up against each other this weekend. As I mentioned with Mahomes, the Chiefs have routinely blown out the Raiders with Mahomes under center. Kelce has averaged 23.67 DraftKings points per game (DKPPG) against Raiders through his career with Mahomes. Waller has averaged fewer points in these games than Kelce (16.15), and that isn’t quite value at his current price point.

Defense

Not much consensus at team defense this week. Of the four most popular options, none are expected to clear double-digit rostership by much. The Ravens, Rams, Cardinals, and Steelers are all projected to be popular plays. Of the four, the Steelers must be the most compelling. Not only are they the cheapest, but they’re also in arguably the best matchup — the Eagles are down to just Greg Ward and Zach Ertz in the passing game, and Carson Wentz has been abysmal through four weeks.

The Cardinals are the most expensive of the four because they face the Jets, but honestly, Joe Flacco could surprise some people. The Rams are a smart play against Kyle Allen, who was a good quarterback to target in his time with Carolina last year. I feel less comfortable about playing the Ravens to target Joe Burrow and the Bengals — especially with Marcus Peters and Jimmy Smith nursing injuries.
